00:00Should you be avoiding ice? The drug, absolutely, but it turns out water-made ice cubes potentially
00:07too. Dr. Brian Kwok Lee, a food scientist, explains, ice that has been handled improperly
00:13can pick up mold, bacteria, and viruses from the hands of servers or cooks that transmit disease.
00:19Much like any other food, ice can also pick up microorganisms from the air or in the container
00:25if it is not properly washed and cleaned. HuffPost reiterates, mold can grow in ice machines if you
00:32have one. Lee continues, ice machines should be regularly cleaned and sterilized. If there are
00:38any potential contaminants in the ice machine itself, these can spread to the ice produced.
00:44Things on the risk radar should include smoothies, slushies, and frozen alcoholic beverages. Back in
00:492016, a leaking air ventilation valve in an ice machine in Finland caused 154 people to become
00:57sick. Lee suggests while the pathogens may vary, ice machine outbreaks can often cause vomiting,
01:03diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, and bloody stall.
