00:00And I want to present it to each and every one of you.
00:02Oh my god, it's so cute!
00:03I feel like this could be Elio's cousin.
00:04I know.
00:12Hi!
00:13I've got something really special from Malaysia.
00:15It's like how Pixar it is to you guys.
00:17Pixar Monsters Studios in Malaysia.
00:19Oh my god, it's so cute!
00:20And I want to present it to each and every one of you.
00:22Thank you!
00:23This is an animated character called Bobo Boy in Malaysia.
00:25Oh my god, she's so cute!
00:27I feel like this could be Elio's cousin.
00:28I know.
00:29Thank you so much!
00:30This is right here.
00:31This is new.
00:43Frankly, a boy who wants to be adopted by Alien
00:46is not something that everyone would think about every day.
00:49Which cheeky one of you here thought about that conversation?
00:53This initial concept came from Adrian Molina,
00:56who is the co-director on Coco.
00:59And now he's also on Coco too, which is very exciting.
01:02But sorry to say the idea did not come from us,
01:04but we were a part of the concept from the very beginning.
01:08But I feel like we put our stamp on it by having Elio so excited to be abducted.
01:14Because abduction was always there, but I think we were feeling like,
01:18oh, it's like the first time that we went to animation school,
01:22or the first time that we stepped through the doors of Pixar.
01:26Like, how did we feel when we entered this place full of people that were like us?
01:32Yes.
01:33And it was just that excitement.
01:34Mouth-breathing, dorky energy.
01:35Yeah.
01:36Dorky excitement.
01:37That we kind of infused into Elio when he gets abducted.
01:39Yeah.
01:40And were there any, like, weirders or most unexpected inspiration that made it into the film?
01:46I think Harley Joseph, our production designer, was really interesting
01:49because for the aliens, he looked at a lot of, like, microscopic creatures.
01:53So, like, the tardigrade, which is this really fascinating, microscopic creature,
01:58became the inspiration for Lorden.
02:00Yeah.
02:01This character we all love.
02:02So, those are the moments where it's this delight and inspiration.
02:05Turning Red was a deeply personal story for you.
02:09Were there anything personal that you connected with Elio in this journey?
02:13Yeah.
02:14I think with the character Elio, with feeling like a weirdo in my high school
02:19who was, like, the vice president of the anime club with my best friend.
02:24Hold up, there's nothing wrong with that.
02:25There's nothing wrong with that.
02:26It's super cool now.
02:27But back in the day, it was just the two of us in the club.
02:31And every day, I would, like, hope and pray and dream that I could, like, go somewhere.
02:35That's kind of what I identify with in Elio when he is, like, trying so hard to get abducted
02:41and to, like, stay on the communiverse because he feels like,
02:44I belong here, I need to stay here.
02:46That definitely came from a very personal place.
02:48This is the most beautiful place I've ever seen.
02:52You'll be one of us.
02:54Leader of Earth.
02:56Huh?
02:57Like, I'm pretty sure many younger ones out there also felt, at some point of their life,
03:01trying to find a sense of belonging.
03:02Like, how did that actually shape you to be where you are?
03:05I also was an odd little kid.
03:08I was also in the anime club, but I was not the president.
03:11Vice president.
03:13Excuse me, vice president.
03:14And I do feel like that sort of feeling of loneliness that I had, I channeled it into my drawing.
03:20That experience when I went to college and when I came here, I realized pretty much everybody here had a similar kind of lifestyle.
03:28Maybe a little bit more lonely at the start, but that has now helped us connect with so many other people through the art that we poured ourselves into.
03:38So, thankfully it all worked out.
03:40Art was our escape, but it also became our way to, like, find each other.
03:44And I also want to say congratulations, Madeline, because this is your first feature length directorial debut.
03:51Yay!
03:52Which, what was your pinch me moment during this whole journey?
03:56Since Elio, it's about fulfilling dreams also.
03:59I mean, every day, but...
04:01When we got the chance to direct animation for the first time, I mean, I grew up watching Pixar movies and just seeing the detail and the care that they put into these characters.
04:13To finally sit in a room with all of them.
04:15They're all so thoughtful.
04:16They're so talented.
04:17And to be able to talk about, you know, really in-depth things about, like, what does it mean about where she puts her arms?
04:24Like, what emotion does that mean?
04:26All those sort of nerdy details, sitting in a room full of people who got it, that was a dream.
04:31I think that was probably my pinch me moment.
04:34You'll feel my wrath.
04:35Oh!
04:36Glordin?
04:37Hi, Dad.
04:38I'm a bargaining chip.
04:39No, say the other thing.
04:40Oh, help me, Father.
04:41Quiet, you.
04:43What does that unholy sound stop?
04:46Someone wanna stop at all!
04:54What is this?
04:55Let's go straight.
04:56Let's go, Father.
04:57Let's move on.
04:58Okay.
04:59This is a big drill.
05:00Let's dive in.
05:01You're so good.
05:02Let's go.
05:03You're so good.
05:04Are you doing this?
05:06You're so good.
05:07I just want to move on.
05:08But I can move on.
05:09I'm so good.
05:10I'm so good.
05:11I'm so good.
05:12I'm so happy.
05:13Not everybody.
05:14You're so good.
05:15All right.
05:17You're so good.
05:18I'm so good.
05:19You're so good.
05:20I'm so good.
05:21I'm so good.
05:22You're so good.
05:22I'm so good.
