00:00Filipina tennis ace Alex Ayala makes her Wimbledon debut at the famed center court on Tuesday, July 1.
00:08Ayala squandered a first set win and dropped a painful three-setter to defending champion Barbara Kerechikova of the Czech Republic 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round of the Wimbledon championships.
00:20Kerechikova was quick to credit the 20-year-old Ayala.
00:24I would like to start with giving the credit to Alex. I mean, what the hell she played in the first set.
00:32Yeah, I mean, she was smashing the ball and she was cleaning the lines and all that, so wow. Wow, she's gonna be really good in a couple of years.
00:41Still, it was a historic stint for Ayala, the first Filipino tennis player in the Open era, male or female, to play in the main draw of Grand Slam events.
00:49Ayala's campaign is not yet over, as she is set to see action in the doubles competition on Wednesday, July 2.
00:56Ayala was coming off seven matches the previous week, which ended with a finals heartbreaker just last Saturday, June 28, at the WTA 250 Eastburn Open.
