00:13What is the best gift you've received?

00:16My pocket watches.

00:18When I was young, that is literally all I wanted.

00:22And getting a vintage pocket watch for Christmas was incredible.

00:28I was prepared.

00:30How did you make your first dollar?

00:33I was six weeks old.

00:34The air was brisk, and I was in an advertisement, a print ad, for life insurance.

00:42It was just little baby Yara looking into the camera like, wouldn't you want life insurance to protect this?

00:50What word makes you cringe?

00:53I remember in ninth grade, my religion teacher wanted to find words that intentionally made us cringe.

01:02And so he found the word puce.

01:04It's a color.

01:05And I just, I don't like any bit of it.

01:09What can you not miss on TV or a streamer?

01:13Uh, okay.

01:14I've watched way too many episodes of Atlanta.

01:20And the reason I say that is that there aren't many episodes, which means I've just continued to watch it and rewatch it.

01:25I loved rewatching Avatar with my brothers.

01:29Those are some that come top of mind.

01:30Great British baking show.

01:32Ooh, that's my stuff.

01:34Last song you got stuck in your head.

01:38The last one was called Pears by Weston Estate.

01:42I have been obsessed.

01:44Movie that makes you cry.

01:47So, you know that one part in Black Panther?

01:50Like, mind you, I've watched this movie five times.

01:52But when Michael B. Jordan says, I was just a young kid running around Oakland, I'm paraphrasing.

01:59There's something about that line that a single tear trickles down my face, like on cue.

02:07Other than nectarines, which was my favorite snack.

02:10Like, favorite junk food snack would have to be those kettle corn pop chips.

02:15What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

02:19My general party trick is that I sound hollow right here.

02:25The last book I read, it was probably something for my thesis.

02:30The work that I read was called Black Images, White Screens.

02:34Or maybe reversed, white screens, black images.

02:37I think there's something so interesting about how granularly he analyzes old movies and films

02:43to understand why representation matters.

02:48Do you have any secret talents?

02:51I dabble in Old English.

02:53And the only phrase I've retained after a year of studying it is, um,

03:12And I sent that to the family group chat, because I had a picture of him that happened like a year ago to date,

03:16in which he looks like a different human being.

03:22What should every woman try at least once in her life?

03:25Oh, you know one thing I tried?

03:27I had a year of saying no.

03:29Our yeses are extremely powerful,

03:31but I know, especially as a young woman and a young woman of color growing up in this world,

03:35getting comfortable saying no and not having to justify it is something that takes constant practice.

03:41So, my year of no is a must try.

03:44And just like that, no more balloons.
