00:00Hello ma'am, as we know from our last episode that leadership truly begins with mastering oneself through discipline, development and constant reflection as we beautifully discussed.
00:11So as we move ahead, now let's talk about some few other key factors that make and shape a strong impactful leader.
00:19So ma'am, communication plays a very huge role in leaders and connect and guide their team members.
00:27So beyond just giving directions, what do you feel how important is communication for leaders, especially when it comes to building trust and inspiring actions?
00:38So communication, I believe, is synonymous to leadership. It is that important.
00:45Let me put this as an example.
00:47Just imagine buying say a bookshelf, a portable bookshelf from an online platform, say Amazon and you receive it and you get an instruction manual along with it.
01:00So just imagine if the instructions in that manual are very convoluted and complex and you're struggling making that bookshelf and eventually you get frustrated and you end up making a weird creation.
01:11Yes.
01:12With some leftover screws and flaps.
01:15So this is what happens when a team is trying to work on a project with a leader who has poor communication skills.
01:22Yes.
01:22So I feel communication is pivotal and extremely important in leadership.
01:28Yes.
01:28I feel that communication is a bridge between what a leader envisions and what eventually gets executed on the ground by the teams.
01:37Yes.
01:37Right. So now what is important to understand is that we usually focus on what, what we have to do, when it is about communication.
01:47I believe that more than what, there is something more also which is important, which is a why.
01:52It happens a lot of times that leaders communicate a very important decision in just one manner that they have to do it.
01:59Yes.
02:00But the teams are not able to relate to it, they are not able to understand the reason why now there is a shift, why there is a drift happening or the acceptance is not coming.
02:08So what is very important to understand it's along with what, it is very important to make people understand why.
02:14Why.
02:14Yes.
02:14Also something which is important is how.
02:17So the communication could be verbal communication which is happening in sitting meetings and all, it could be in the form of, you know, a paper which is given in the form of a circular.
02:27Yes.
02:28But what is important is how it is communicated.
02:30Yes.
02:31Totally agreed ma'am.
02:32That was an amazing answer.
02:33So what happens when there is a lack of communication and how does it affect the team dynamic?
02:37So let me put this in the form of a small story.
02:40This story is about four friends, the names were everybody, nobody, anybody and somebody.
02:46So once there was a very important work, a task which was given to these four friends, everybody thought that somebody would do it.
02:54Anybody could have done it, but nobody did it.
02:58Somebody got angry because it was everybody's job.
03:01Yes.
03:02Everybody thought that anybody could do it, but nobody realized that everybody would not do it.
03:07Yes.
03:08So everybody got angry on somebody because nobody did what anybody could have done.
03:15So it is a little confusing, I know, but this is the kind of chaos which happens if the communication is not proper.
03:22So as a leader, it is very important to understand that it's our job to make the complex and complicated things simpler rather than making simple things complex by the lack of communication.
03:34And very complicated things can be simplified if the communication is clear, it's crisp and precise as I was telling earlier.
03:43So this is the importance of communication.
03:46As we discussed earlier, team building and team empowerment are such important parts of a leader's journey.
03:52How can a leader effectively ensure this?
03:55I believe that, you know, as a leader at times, it's important that beyond taking charge, you take care of those in your charge.
04:04So you take care of those who are in your teams.
04:07Now, how to ensure this and how to go about this is again one, two, three, I will do.
04:13So the first, I think, is the most important thing is delegation.
04:16Yes.
04:17Now, at times delegation is misunderstood by, you know, just passing on the responsibilities.
04:23It happens a lot of times when there is some work and then we are just distributing it.
04:27You can do this, you can do this and we call this delegation.
04:30I believe that delegation is something which is very different.
04:33It is not just offloading your responsibilities or your work.
04:38Yes.
04:39It is more about entrusting your team with the responsibility which also helps them grow and develop.
04:46Yes.
04:47So delegation is based upon the first step is identification of the correct strengths and weaknesses of your team members.
04:54Yes.
04:55And then, I mean, delegating the work effectively on the basis of that.
04:59Yes.
05:00Also what is very important in delegation is to ensure as a leader that you continuously and constructively mentor them.
05:07Yes.
05:08During this journey.
05:09And you make sure that they are able to give complete justice to the delegation by ensuring a good ecosystem,
05:14the correct resources.
05:16Yes.
05:17And the correct guidance.
05:18The second, I believe, is participation.
05:21Yes.
05:22So what I mean by participation is very important to make sure that the teams feel that their voices are heard.
05:28Yes.
05:29And their opinions are valued.
05:30This basically fosters a sense of environment in the teams by which they feel they are contributing to something which is bigger than their own selves.
05:38Yes.
05:39They are contributing towards the organization.
05:41So participation is very, very important.
05:43And the third, and I feel the most important of all these three is the self-realization.
05:48Yes.
05:49What I mean by this is, sometimes it happens, you know, the leaders become problem solvers.
05:54Most of the times they feel that we are supposed to solve all the problems that come to us.
05:59Yes.
06:00But I believe that what is also important is to empower the teams to be able to innovate and solve their own problems at times.
06:08Yes.
06:09Because it's very important to understand that the teams should be able to be self-sufficient when you are not around.
06:14Yes.
06:15And that will only happen when you let the teams innovate, come up with the solutions also at times.
06:20Yes.
06:21And then give them constructive feedbacks to make sure that whatever problems we were together trying to solve are going in the correct direction.
06:28Okay.
06:29Okay.
06:30So that is helping to help.
06:31We don't believe what nerf is maybe necessary to or not really have any centralized.
06:32Yes.
06:33Mm-hmm.
