Children's rights advocates say it's time to teach children about staying safe online, including in schools, as the number of explicit images of minors grows on the Internet.

00:00Reports of explicit images of minors online have exploded in the past few years.

00:05And child welfare advocates say it's time to teach children what they can do to protect

00:09themselves.

00:10Last year, the Health Ministry got over 3,100 reports of child sex abuse material spreading

00:15online.

00:16That's a nearly six-fold rise from 2018.

00:19It's part of a global epidemic.

00:21A 2024 report from the Global Child Safety Institute, ChildBlight, estimated that one

00:26in eight of the world's children have been exposed to sexual images or had ones taken

00:30of or shared with them without their consent in the last 12 months.

00:35Child welfare advocates say a culture of letting minors interact unsupervised with strangers

00:39is part of the problem.

00:40We will see that if there are a live and a platform that has used the experience of

00:45self-image or a change of behavior, it is a higher.

00:51Sociologists say children in tough home situations are especially vulnerable.

00:55But there's a range of places these photos may come from.

01:14Sometimes photos are taken due to peer pressure and leaked by classmates.

01:18And then there are criminal groups that solicit images.

01:21This makes for a complicated issue, but one advocates say can still be tackled.

01:25They want more education for families about online exploitation.

01:29And they want schools to teach kids how to be safe online, too.

01:32Health Ministry officials seem sympathetic.

01:34The government is proactive about seizing web domains that host images of minors.

01:52But activists say stopping the flood will require parents getting involved and teaching children

01:57about the warning signs of exploitation.
