00:00YouTube creator and animal rescuer Mikayla Raines, best known for founding Save a Fox Rescue,
00:05has passed away. And now her husband is speaking out, alleging that years of targeted harassment
00:09online played a major role in her death. The 29-year-old rose to internet fame for her work
00:15rescuing captive-born foxes, many saved from U.S. fur farms. Through her non-profit Save a Fox,
00:21she bottle-fed pups, raised awareness, and built a following of millions across platforms.
00:26Raines' rescue efforts made headlines and made her a beloved figure in the animal care space.
00:32But behind the scenes, Mikayla was reportedly struggling. In an emotional video posted to
00:36the Save a Fox YouTube channel, her husband, Ethan Raines, described years of online bullying that
00:42took a deep mental toll. Ethan claims some of the harassment came from people who were once close
00:47to Mikayla and alleges it worsened her battle with autism, depression, and borderline personality
00:53disorder, three conditions that can significantly heighten emotional sensitivity, especially to
00:58criticism and rejection. According to Rise Up Autism, individuals with autism may experience
01:03rejection sensitivity dysphoria, causing intense emotional pain in response to even mild disapproval
01:09or social friction. While the Anxiety and Depression Association of America states individuals with
01:15depression often maintain a harsh internal dialogue. And when others criticize them, even constructively,
01:21it can feel like salt to the wound, triggering deep shame and emotional pain. While clinical
01:26research supports that individuals with BPD exhibit heightened emotional reactivity or perceived
01:32criticism or social rejection, generally with intense shame, anger, and distress, far more than people
01:38without borderline personality disorder. And combined, these conditions may have made Mikayla especially
01:44vulnerable to the kind of persistent online attacks and betrayal her husband describes. And what some saw as
01:49drama or critique may have felt to her like rejection, humiliation, and emotional isolation,
01:55pushing her to a place she couldn't escape from. After Mikayla's death, a well-known Reddit thread that
02:01frequently criticized her in her rescue, specifically one called Save a Fox Snark, was either locked or made
02:07private. But archived posts, however, reveal a community of former fans sharing behind-the-scenes claims,
02:13ranging from alleged safety concerns to personal disputes with volunteers. One post accused Mikayla
02:20of downplaying an animal bite and pressuring a volunteer to avoid seeking medical care. And while
02:25none of these claims have been independently verified, the online pile-on appears to have been relentless.
02:31And Mikayla's husband says it ultimately broke her spirit. Now Ethan's committed to continuing her
02:36rescue work in Mikayla's memory. Ethan ended his video with a heartfelt reminder for anyone who may be
02:42struggling to reach out to friends, family, or a mental health professional, and included the
02:47988 Suicide Crisis Lifeline underneath the video. As tributes pour in across social media, many are
02:53calling for a deeper conversation about mental health and the long-term damage of digital harassment.
