00:00We have Coach James Young, of course, to talk basketball, our hoops analyst.
00:05You see him on Betting Above the Rim, pro basketball today, getting ready for the NBA
00:10draft and sports grids, continuing coverage Wednesday and Thursday night of rounds one and two.
00:17From everything that we're seeing, the big talk so far has been about this Ace Bailey
00:24not going to the Sixers and ending up as low as six, right, to the Wizards.
00:32What do you think is going to happen?
00:33I was talking to Mike DiCorsi about it, and Paykel said he was like literally the best
00:39player he's ever coached in terms of, you know, being a guy that did whatever they wanted,
00:45whatever they asked.
00:46He loved everybody, got along with his teammates, knew the entire staff, everyone.
00:51He was close with everyone, never had a single problem with the guy.
00:56Why is he getting such a bad rap now because he didn't go to some meeting with the Sixers?
01:03It can't be just that, can it?
01:05Well, he ducked out on a lot of meetings, and listen, I love Steve Peichel.
01:09I'm a Jersey guy, but he had two of the top three players in the NBA draft, and he couldn't
01:13even make the NCAA tournament.
01:15I don't know what he's talking about in regards to what he did.
01:19Mike said that they had nothing else.
01:22They had those two and nothing else.
01:24No, nothing else.
01:24And I think Steve learned his lesson that he's going to have to balance his roster a little
01:29bit in the future.
01:30Actually, Rutgers, I do believe, has a good recruiting class this upcoming year.
01:34But to me, Pharrell, I'm not buying it.
01:36I think Ace Bailey is, in my opinion, the second most talented player in the draft.
01:42I don't see how he goes past three.
01:45Either Philadelphia takes him or Philadelphia moves the pick.
01:49I know there's a team at eight in Brooklyn that would absolutely do everything and move
01:54the mountains to go get Ace Bailey.
01:56Ace Bailey threw the first pitch out of the Mets game, I think, over the weekend.
02:00I think he wants Brooklyn.
02:02I think he wants the slide.
02:04And think about it.
02:04He wants to be a star, Pharrell.
02:06Hear me out.
02:07Dallas, no.
02:09San Antonio, no.
02:11Philadelphia, if they keep the pick, they have Embiid, they have Maxie, they have McCain,
02:16not a star.
02:17Charlotte, you could argue that it's LaMelo's team, right?
02:20Utah, you don't want to go there.
02:22Washington, interesting, because I think they have an interesting dilemma we'll get to in
02:27a second.
02:28New Orleans, seven.
02:29And then there's Brooklyn at eight.
02:30I know that Brooklyn could do something wild if they want him so bad, right?
02:37Trade up the three, absorb PG's contract, and you can find a way, because I'm sure Philadelphia
02:43can do anything to get out of PG's contract, including moving the number three pick.
02:49And for me, for people, say, take Edgeco, take Trey Johnson, take Knipple, where does
02:57that fit Philadelphia, McCain, Maxie, you were talking a little bit about Oubre.
03:02I don't think that makes sense for Philadelphia.
03:06I think they either take Ace Bailey or they move him into trade.
03:12So it sounded to me like at some level you think that Brooklyn would make a deal to get
03:19Bailey and Paul George?
03:22To move up.
03:23I think they want Ace Bailey.
03:24Listen, Brooklyn has called three, Brooklyn called San Antonio.
03:29They have to be willing to take something on.
03:32And you notice in Philadelphia, Paul George was so bad.
03:36And that could be, besides Bradley Beal Farrell, I don't think there's a worse contract in the
03:40NBA right now than Paul George, right?
03:42In regards to reliability and productivity and the amount of money he's paid.
03:46So Brooklyn can absorb that money and go ahead and get that pick.
03:51So to me, I wouldn't be surprised if Brooklyn tries again, because I think Brooklyn wants
03:57to rebuild, start over.
03:59I think Ace Bailey wants to be a star and he wants to be a star in the media market.
04:03Brooklyn and Ace Bailey just seems to line up.
04:06That's why I think Ace Bailey ducked all those workouts.
04:09I think he wants to slide to eight.
04:10I just don't think he gets there.
04:12That's why I think Brooklyn's got to go get him.
04:13So it's just a, for, for, so I understand this.
04:17So for Philly, what they get out of this is not having to pay Paul George.
04:22It's, it's all worth it to them just to do that and not get the player.
04:26I think they get, you know, trade the pick three for eight, but for them, they got to get
04:30out from under that contract for L. I mean, I mean, what do they, it makes no sense what
04:35that trade did.
04:36And I mean, that signing did and for the amount of money and the fact that Paul George doesn't
04:40stay healthy, we, we all know this.
04:42I mean, listen, PG 10 years ago was a great player.
04:45Now playoff P and playoff P hasn't been around since what?
04:50Like 2017 to 2018.
04:52And don't even tell me, I mean, if you want to ask anyone, ask the Clippers, when they
04:57traded for SG, when they've traded him for SGA, that, that trade single handling destroyed
05:03the Clippers chances of ever winning a championship, but then, but it's a trade till probably next
05:09three or four years.
05:09So do you feel coach that that's the, like the most exciting thing right now going into
05:17Wednesday night to keep an eye on is what's happening with Ace Bailey?
05:21Because I know your other, uh, one of your other props is this Derek queen guy.
05:28You have him going in the top 10, whereas everyone else has him at 11 or 12 or worse.
05:37I was talking to DeCoursey about this guy loves queen, but he did say that no team, uh, has
05:46been interested in him inside the top 10.
05:48He said that to me today.
05:50And you think he's still going top 10 folks.
05:53I, I look at things differently.
05:55I look at things as a coach and as how I break things down and Brooklyn doesn't make a trade.
06:01They need a power forward.
06:02We know that Toronto needs help on the front line.
06:06And so does Phoenix because especially the fact that they have Ryan done as a three.
06:11I think someone like Derek queen makes sense in that eight, nine, 10 range because of what teams need.
06:20That's why I look at, I look at things differently.
06:22I'm not like this whole, like, Oh, he does this and his measurables.
06:26I look at me as a coach saying, what do I need to be better tomorrow?
06:29Right?
06:30What do you need to be better tomorrow?
06:32Brooklyn, Toronto, Phoenix, front line help.
06:34That's why I think Derek queen makes sense in one of those three spots.
06:38And I mean, he was an incredible player at Maryland.
06:43Why is he not getting that respect in the talk leading up to the draft that like no one, like I'm hearing, you know, I agree with you.
06:52I agree with Mike that he's a baller.
06:54There's no doubt that guy balls out.
06:57We watched it in the tournament with our very eyes.
07:00Why is it that no one is talking about him at that level right now going into this draft?
07:06I think because of, he doesn't look at six foot nine for all.
07:10He doesn't look the explosive dynamite jumper, the athlete, the guy for, I think the guy's very silky smooth.
07:18I think he's extremely skilled for his size, but also because he's not super bouncy at six, nine.
07:25It is he a tweener, right?
07:27Is he like, you know, he's, he's not big enough and I feel like he'll have to be a four, but not quick enough to be a three.
07:33I don't care.
07:34I think the guy can ball.
07:35I love Derek queen in the top 10.
07:37Yeah, I can work with that.
07:39Listen to me.
07:40This guy's six, nine.
07:42I don't care what he is.
07:43He's big and he can ball and he can pass and he can shoot.
07:46He's got that.
07:46He's got that clutch gene in him too.
07:49He wins games.
07:50He wants the ball at the end of the game.
07:52You saw him hit that shot in the tournament with no time left.
07:56He went up and with the kiss off the glass.
07:58How can you say that guy's not a baller, not you, but people.
08:03Because he doesn't pass the eye test.
08:07You know, we pass folks the ball test.
08:12We ball.
08:13We watch.
08:14I coach.
08:15We're all plays.
08:16So we look at things a little bit differently than the, oh, he only has a vertical leap of this.
08:20He only can do a subtle run of this.
08:23The boy can ball.
08:24And that's all y'all need to know.
08:26I've been playing with this guy that played in Japan, six, nine.
08:31And all I know is when I see him coming down the lane in the air, I get out of the way because I know I can get injured when he lands.
08:38So give me that kid queen all day.
08:40We're talking to coach James Young about the NBA draft sports grid with continuing coverage Wednesday and Thursday night of the NBA's draft this year.
08:50Rounds one and two Wednesday round one, obviously Thursday round two.
08:54You get the best coverage right here on sports grid.
08:57Coach is doing it.
08:58Uh, the Kevin Walsh, uh, many others.
09:01It'll be awesome.
09:02Uh, follow the draft on sports grid.
09:05Do the right thing.
09:06Uh, be a good American watch sports grid.
09:09All right.
09:09Uh, the kid Jaka Junis from Illinois, uh, and the kid Trey Johnson from Texas.
09:15How do you see those two going?
09:18Yeah.
09:18Uh, Casper, you can go, you can go, you can go, you can go, uh, six, five point guard out of Illinois.
09:23I have him.
09:23If they go guard, I like him at Phoenix at 10.
09:27I think this is the guy that could score the ball as a point.
09:30He's a big point guard at six, five.
09:32Uh, you listen, you play for Brad Underwood.
09:35You know, you're toughest.
09:35You know what?
09:36So I like him to go in the top 10.
09:39Also, this is a lot of juice money.
09:41Trey Johnson at minus one 95 to go in the top five.
09:45I like him at Utah.
09:47If you look at Utah carefully, Keontae George is at the one.
09:51We don't know what we're going to do with Laurie market or Walker cuts on and so forth, but Jordan Clarkson is always in the trade market.
09:58You could reset that roster with Keontae George at the point, Trey Johnson at the two, Colin Sexton gets moved, uh, possibly, uh, obviously, um, you know, the, the, the score moved as well.
10:10Jordan Clarkson.
10:11So to me, Trey Johnson, top five, uh, Casper, Jackie Jonas, top 10 tomorrow night.
10:17So, you know, there was a big, uh, a couple of big trades, uh, talk about the one that affected the Pelicans and Wizards and even on the side, the Knicks.
10:29Yeah.
10:30So, you know, a big trade that took place a couple of hours ago said Jordan, the main pieces are, are Jordan Poole, uh, getting moved for CJ McCollum.
10:40Obviously there's other guys that are involved in the deal, which, which does make it, uh, very interesting.
10:47But to me, the reason why I find this interesting is folks is the Knicks.
10:52Here's why Washington's in a pretty interesting spot right now.
10:57Number one, next year, they're gonna have over a hundred million dollars coming off the cap, including CJ McCollum.
11:03I think CJ McCollum, Mark is smart.
11:05And there's some other big ticket guy that come off the books next year for Washington, but here's how it affects the Knicks.
11:12Picks one through eight are protected, meaning Washington was also traded to New York.
11:19It stayed with the, with Washington because of their picking six.
11:23Next year it's protected one to eight, meaning a Washington finishes in the one through eight, right?
11:30In regards to draft picks, they keep the pick.
11:33If it goes later than eight, it goes to the Knicks.
11:37So that freaking makes a very interesting dilemma for Washington folks is do they attempt to make the playoffs and lose that pick?
11:47Or do they tank again?
11:51You got this bonds of this kid out of, out of a B, out of, that's going to BYU next year.
11:57It's a loaded draft class next year.
11:59But when guys are expiring contracts, Washington's going to be a team to watch in regards to trading players, buying out.
12:06Because I don't think there are any way, Pharrell, they want to lose that pick one through eight.
12:10What did you think of the deal that sent Holiday for Simons?
12:15It's funny, Pharrell, there's got to be another move for Boston.
12:21Now we know that Boston was tied up with the electric tax and they had to get rid of guys.
12:26Holiday is the first piece.
12:28But I want people to sit back and look at this and tell me,
12:33is everybody Simons the type of guy that you think plays for the Celtics?
12:37Unselfish?
12:39No, he's selfish.
12:41Moves the ball?
12:42Absolutely not.
12:44Plays defense?
12:45Absolutely not.
12:47So to me, I thought it was more of getting rid of the salary and then bringing a guy in that they have for one year.
12:56But the other part is, Anthony Simons played the same position as Jalen Brown.
13:01So are you going to go with another three-guard lineup of maybe Derek White, Anthony Simons, Jalen Brown?
13:10Kind of small right there, especially at the three spot.
13:12I wonder if there's another correspondent who, do they move Anthony Simons somewhere else?
13:18Or is someone else getting moved?
13:21Other guy to watch out for Pharrell, Chris Stapps, poor Zingers.
13:24There's rumblings that San Antonio may want to get in the mix because I think San Antonio wants to eventually put someone like,
13:32saw a big, a rim protector, kind of like Hartenstein or Derek Lively is to AD or Webb and Yama, put a big body or a shot block in five to protect Wemby and make him a really good weak side shot blocker.
13:48Will the Rockets be in the Western Conference final with Durant or is it another Brooklyn-Phoenix all over again?
13:56No, Pharrell, I thought what Houston did was so smart.
14:01If you really think about it, San Antonio didn't want to engage.
14:05Miami, they were serious.
14:07Minnesota, they didn't want to go there.
14:09And the Knicks didn't want KD.
14:11So at the end of the day, Pharrell, they just waited.
14:15And the fact that they did not give up Jabari Smith, who said they didn't want to give up,
14:18I think you look at that lineup as Fred VanBlees, should he resign at the point?
14:22Either Shepard or Ken Whitmore at the two.
14:25And then you go Ament Thompson, Kevin Durant, Al-Ferrin Shungun, bring Torrey Easton off the bench.
14:29What?
14:30I absolutely love Torrey Easton to death.
14:32The other one between Whitmore and Shepard.
14:34And then Steven Adams is on a three-year, $39 million contract as a backup who was good in the playoffs.
14:39Pharrell with E-Man Dokun.
14:41You know how much Kevin Durant loved him since his time in Brooklyn.
14:44This is a good move for Houston.
14:46Why?
14:46They're in the window now, but without giving up Jabari Smith, they still have their window into the future.
14:53What is your overall feeling about this draft?
14:59I think Cooper Flagg is going to be sensational.
15:02I think Ace Bailey could be an ultimate wild card.
15:05I don't know if Dylan Harper is as good as everybody thinks he is.
15:08And I don't understand the Dylan Harper, De'Aaron Fox, Devin Vassell combination.
15:13I think someone is getting moved.
15:15I don't even talk about Stephon Castle.
15:17Someone's getting moved there.
15:19But to me, I think you look at those three guys and, you know, not a lot of sexy names, Pharrell.
15:25And then you look at the internationals.
15:27Pharrell, I mean, Yucky Jonas obviously is an international kid.
15:30It's always Maliwash.
15:30But those are U.S. guys that played college ball.
15:34When was the last time we were going top 10 in the NBA draft and not have one international guy, meaning a guy not being in U.S. basketball last year in college?
15:45Well, it should be exciting.
15:46I can't wait to see the coverage you guys have from New York City.
