00:00As summer arrives, many of us are thinking about home improvements, but one property

00:06expert has taken that a step further with a guide to help homeowners prepare for the

00:11ultimate worst-case scenario, a zombie apocalypse.

00:15Andy Sims from the tradesperson platform MyBuilder.com has compiled a list of practical, and slightly

00:22tongue-in-cheek, tips for making your home zombie-proof.

00:26And while a real outbreak isn't exactly on the horizon, he says some of these suggestions

00:31could actually come in handy for everyday security too.

00:34Sims said, I can't say that I'm currently concerned about building a survival bunker,

00:39but if I was, there are some clear steps I would consider taking.

00:43He added, I always say that preparation is key to success, so why not plan ahead?

00:49Prices are only going up, so getting zombie-proofed now makes financial sense, as well as lowering

00:55your risk of having your brains eaten.

00:57So what does zombie-proofing your home involve?

01:00Well, for starters, build a 10-foot-high wall.

01:04Zombies aren't exactly great climbers, so that should be enough to deter them, and it'll

01:08keep out other unwanted visitors too.

01:11Alternatively, an 8-foot fence with barbed wire and a trench could do the job, though your

01:16delivery driver won't thank you for that one.

01:19Inside the house, deadbolts, secure windows and additional locks are key to holding your

01:24ground.

01:25Not only might this keep the undead out, but it could also reduce your home insurance premium.

01:31You'll also need supplies.

01:32A temperature-controlled larder can help store food and water if you're stuck inside for a

01:37while, and powering it with solar panels could be essential if the grid goes down.

01:43High-tech security systems such as CCTV, motion sensors and night vision cameras are useful

01:50to detect zombies early or simply deter nosy neighbours.

01:55For long-term survival, a fresh water supply is vital.

01:58A well could literally be a lifesaver, though pushing zombies into it is strongly discouraged.

02:03If they do get through your defences, a bunker or secure room, ideally underground, could

02:09be the last line of safety, but beware.

02:12This requires planning approval and professional input from a structural engineer.

02:17SIMS suggests building a treehouse or lookout tower.

02:20It's great for surveillance and a great project for the kids too.

02:24And if staying put isn't an option, a well-planned escape tunnel might be.
