Why DC Movies Fail you may be wondering. Zack Snyder was the director behind multiple DCEU films. Snyder constructed the foundation in an attempt to compete with Marvel Studios. Marvel was on a roll with Iron man, Thor, & Captain America, all becoming big hits. Kevin Feige laid out the blueprint, which should've been a slam dunk for WB/DC. Unfortunately a non comic book fan was in charge. Needless to say, things didn't workout for WB/DC. We take a look back at the downfall of the Snyder Verse aka DCEU in this in depth breakdown.

00:00Marvel Studios took the world by storm when they assembled Earth's Mightiest Heroes in 2012.
00:15Leading up to the success was deliberate building of a proper foundation for the team-up.
00:22The creative mind and visionary behind it all was comic book enthusiast Kevin Feige.
00:28Warner Brothers who owned much bigger properties struggled to reach the same heights.
00:35Many point to one individual they put in charge as the reason.
00:40Let's take a look back at where things may have went wrong for the DC Extended Universe.
00:46The superhero genre had quite the resurgence in the early 2000s.
00:51As Marvel staples like X-Men and Spider-Man dominated the box office.
00:57WB soon after enlisted well-respected director Chris Nolan to bring a modern Batman back to
01:03the rapidly growing genre.
01:06The Nolan films made quite the splash for Warner Brothers.
01:10Not only with commercial success, but also the projects pleased the critics.
01:15While Chris was doing right by the Dark Knight in the eyes of many, Feige was hard at work
01:21constructing his shared universe.
01:23Iron Man would be the franchise that kicked everything off.
01:27It laid the groundwork for Captain America, Thor, and the Hulk to eventually join forces.
01:34Audiences anticipating the team-up, after many teasers in each movie, led to a pop culture phenomenon.
01:41There were many discussions of WB doing the same with their DC properties.
01:48Theoretically, the possible stories they could conjure up were nearly endless.
01:53As Nolan's trilogy was coming to an end.
01:57During the production of The Dark Knight Rises, the creative minds involved pitched a Superman
02:02movie to Warner executives.
02:04Zack Snyder's name was thrown around to direct the project.
02:09He had a history with Warner, as he directed the Watchmen movie prior.
02:14The film was considered a theatrical flop.
02:18Grossing under $100 million in the domestic box office.
02:23Zack had a distinct style of filmmaking.
02:26Often relying heavily on visuals such as slow motion, and other special effects.
02:32Telling a cohesive and engaging story, often took a backseat for the director.
02:37Snyder previously expressed his preference for edgy and dark comics.
02:42Even stating if he had a Batman movie of his own, the caped crusader potentially could get
02:47sexually abused.
02:49While this should have been a red flag for Warner executives.
02:53Thanks to a co-sign from the well-respected Nolan.
02:57Snyder was given the opportunity to direct the upcoming Superman film, and potentially for
03:02others.
03:04Superman of Steel was released in 2013, and it had an outstanding opening weekend.
03:10However due to negative word of mouth, and mixed reviews.
03:14The movie would have significant drop-offs for the following weeks.
03:18Many thought Snyder's vision for Superman was way too dark.
03:23Superman also questioned many other creative decisions.
03:27The biggest criticisms were on Superman-like moments.
03:30Other issues raised by critics was the enormous amount of city destruction, which most likely
03:54led to thousands of off-screen deaths, and of course the beacon of hope choosing to kill.
04:01Regardless of the mixed reception of Man of Steel.
04:04The movie did turn a profit.
04:07But not quite reaching Marvel-level returns.
04:10However, it was enough to consider more films.
04:15Snyder's vision for a follow-up was quickly greenlit.
04:18He made an announcement at a Comic-Con convention, just two months after Man of Steel released.
04:44Snyder opted out of doing a standalone Superman sequel, in favor of introducing Batman in
04:50his Man of Steel universe, once again failing to develop things properly.
04:57Apparently, he really wanted to see how Bruce would react to the events that happened in his
05:02newly created world.
05:05Fans were ecstatic, as this would be the first time the two biggest superheroes ever shared the
05:10big screen.
05:12Jack not only picked Ben Affleck as his Batman for the follow-up.
05:16He also was given the freedom to cast actors for future DC movies.
05:21And thus, the Snyderverse was created.
05:25Batman v Superman released in early 2016.
05:29And the trend of mixed reviews continued.
05:33More questionable creative decisions, with very few positive takeaways.
05:38It was actually reviewed worse than Man of Steel.
05:41The film was almost three hours long.
05:45Many thought the plot didn't make much sense, and they may have packed too much into the movie.
05:50The film used two major comic book storylines.
05:54The Dark Knight Returns graphic novel.
05:56And the death of Superman, featuring one of his biggest villains ever.
06:06Other criticisms were.
06:08Batman killing on multiple occasions.
06:11Superman and Batman's inability to properly communicate during confrontations.
06:16And how saying one name sold their issues completely.
06:29It was absolutely a mess in the eyes of many.
06:32The reviews for the film have come out.
06:34And I don't know if you've had a chance to have a look at them.
06:36Or like your response to those.
06:38Or whatever.
06:39Well, it's been getting a mixed response.
06:42Ironically, while BVS was receiving tons of backlash, Snyder had already started filming
06:49the Justice League movie.
06:52In an attempt to course correct, Warner Brothers decided to restrict the freedom that Zack was
06:58originally given.
07:00The script needed several rewrites.
07:03They wanted more comedy, a lighter tone, and a shorter runtime.
07:08They didn't want to take the gamble on Snyder's vision any longer.
07:12As fans weren't exactly raving about his bleak direction.
07:17As the production continued on the Justice League, Snyder would have to step away in the
07:22later stages of filming.
07:25His daughter Autumn sadly passed away.
07:28But Zack felt it was best to spend time with his family.
07:31In order to finish the movie, Warner hired Joss Whedon to take over.
07:36He previously directed two of Marvel's highest grossing Avengers films.
07:42It seemed fitting to enlist his expertise, with DC's first attempt at a team up.
07:48Justice League officially released in November of 2017.
07:51While some fans were excited to see their favorite characters finally come together.
07:58Like other Snyder projects, it received mixed reviews.
08:02The movie underperformed in the box office.
08:06Making the least of any DC film at the time.
08:09Many would say the movie suffered, by having two directors.
08:14The color scheme seemed rather odd.
08:17The CGI was some of the worst of any DC films.
08:21It also lacked character development, as the runtime was just two hours.
08:26It was Snyder's shortest work thus far.
08:30Audiences speculated if there was more left on the table.
08:33The Batman vs Superman director's cut was better received than its theatrical version.
08:39It featured about 30 minutes worth of additional scenes.
08:44Still wasn't great by any means, but a slightly better version overall.
08:49Over time fandom was created to see the Snyder cut.
08:53DC fans wanted to see just one vision.
08:58After so much Snyder support over the years, WB finally allowed Zack to finish his film, including
09:05reshoots.
09:07It was also a great opportunity for Warner Bros.
09:11As it could be released on their brand new streaming service.
09:15The Snyder cut was for hours long with far less comedy.
09:19It was slightly more fleshed out and even recolored.
09:23While it wasn't a home run by any means.
09:27It did allow fans to see an untampered with version.
09:30Thanks to multiple Snyder flops with DC's biggest properties, fans started to give up
09:36on DC's cinematic universe.
09:40To the point where their movies were predicted to be bad.
09:43The vision that Zack had, was not the vision the fans wanted, nor was it even profitable
09:49in the long run.
09:51After the Warner Bros. Discovery merger.
09:54They elected to do away with the Snyderverse completely.
09:58Hiring James Gunn to take over and be their new Kevin Feige.
10:02Like, people are always like, well Batman...
10:06Batman can't kill.
10:07Right?
10:08So Batman can't kill is canon.
10:09And I'm like, okay, well the first thing I want to do when you say that...
10:13Is I want to see what happens.
10:19And they go like, well don't put him in a situation where he has to kill someone.
10:22I'm like, well, that's just like, you're protecting your god in a weird way.
10:27Right?
10:28You're making your god irrelevant if he can't be in that situation.
10:32Like people...
10:33It's a stupid take.
10:34It's a really stupid take.
