00:00What if I told you, the ocean might be trying to warn us, not through waves or storms, but through a mysterious fish longer than a car and stranger than fiction, and also has been feared as a sign of doom.
00:14Hello and welcome, I am Gaurang Kadam and you are watching Lokman Times.
00:18Today, we aren't just reporting a story, we are diving deep into the depth of the ocean, where a creature known as the old fish is making headlines across the world.
00:28This deep sea serpent, also called the messenger from the sea gods, has appeared suddenly in parts of Asia, and now also in India.
00:37But why now? And what does it mean? And should we be worried?
00:41Stick with us because what you are about to hear includes Asian legends, scientific puzzles, chilling real life disasters that followed over fish sighting.
00:51Plus, we will also tell you what happened after the fish showed up in India, and how this bizarre marine visitor could be linked to earthquakes and tsunamis and even ghost ships.
01:01This is the strange story of oarfish, also known as the messenger from the sea gods, and why its sudden appearance in India is raising eyebrows.
01:11Let's find out. In Japanese folklore, the oarfish is known as the rogyu no sukai, that means the messenger from the dragon palace.
01:19According to old beliefs, whenever this fish is spotted near the surface, it means something bad is about to happen, usually a massive earthquake or a tsunami.
01:29Why? Because the oarfish usually lives thousands feet below the surface, in the twilight zone of the ocean, where sunlight can't reach.
01:38It only comes up when it's disturbed by the undersea tremors or changes in the water pressure.
01:45So, when people see it floating near the coast or washing ashore, panic spreads.
01:50Now, let's be clear. There is no scientific proof that the oarfish predict earthquakes.
01:56But several incidents make the connection too hard to ignore.
02:00In 2010, several oarfish were found dead along the Japanese coast.
02:05Months later, the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami hit, killing over 15,000 people.
02:13In 2020, an oarfish was ashore in the Philippines soon after Mindanao experienced a 6.6 magnitude earthquake.
02:22In 2017, multiple oarfish sightings in Peru were followed by a 7.1 magnitude quake.
02:28So, is this really a coincidence? Even scientists agree that the fish could be reacting to stress or changes in the tectonic activity.
02:37Though not a predictor in the way, whether forecasts work, the oarfish might be nature's early warning to the global system.
02:45The rare oarfish has now been spotted in India.
02:47In June 2024, fishermen of the coast of Digha, West Bengal, discovered a long serpent-like fish floating near their boats.
02:57At first, they thought it was some mythical sea creature.
03:00Videos quickly went viral with people calling it a sign of doom.
03:05Within a few days of sighting, mild tremors were recorded along the Bay of Bengal.
03:09While not directly linked, the timing has stirred public into concern and debate.
03:15This isn't the first time India has ever seen a strange marine sighting before disaster.
03:20And now in May 2025, fishermen in Tamil Nadu have again caught a massive 30-foot oarfish the first sighting of this year.
03:29It took seven men to hold it for a viral photo, triggering a wave of speculation and alarm online.
03:36Let's pause the panic for a moment and understand.
03:39What this creature actually is?
03:42The oarfish is the longest bony fish in the world.
03:45Some grow up to 11 meters, that's longer than a bus.
03:49It lives in the deep ocean around 200 to 1000 meters below the surface.
03:55Its body is ribbon-like, silver in color, with a red dorsal fin running along its back, making it look like a dragon.
04:03It feeds on tiny marine animals like plankton and krill.
04:08Because it lives in such extreme depths, seeing it near the surface is extremely rare and usually a sign that something underwater has been disturbed.
04:17So, now the big question, should we be worried?
04:20Here's what experts are saying.
04:22The Geological Survey of India has not issued any earthquake alerts in the area.
04:28However, marine biologists are urging coastal monitoring.
04:32Locals are being asked to report any unusual fish sighting or beaching events.
04:36The truth is, nature often sends us signals before disaster strikes.
04:41Sometimes we ignore them, sometimes we don't understand them.
04:45But awareness can never hurt.
04:47Whether the oarfish is a messenger of doom or a misunderstood creature, one thing is clear.
04:52It is time we pay attention to the ocean and its messages.
04:58Not every fish is just a fish.
05:00Sometimes it's a warning wrapped in silver scales.
05:03This is Gaurang Kadam signing off.
05:05Stay curious, stay alert and stay safe.
05:08Don't forget to like, share and subscribe Lokmat Times for more such deep dives into the world's most mysterious stories.
