00:00Driving into Redcar, I was surprised at some of the stunning coastal views with golden sands and gorgeous looking waters,
00:09although there was lots of building work and development taking place.
00:13There was, however, a playground, crazy golf and a leisure centre.
00:19Although, sadly, the Esplanade, as it's known, which is the seafront,
00:23seems to be full of boarded-up shops, arcades, with only a few remaining.
00:31It's a sad sight for such a wonderful seafront and boardwalk area.
00:35The same goes for the town centre too.
00:38So I popped upstairs to Mike's Cafe to speak to the owner to find out what was happening.
00:43What's it like living and running a business here in Redcar?
00:46Ooh, at the minute it's quite hard work with the latest wage increases and we've just gone VAT registered,
00:56but I've been doing it off and on for the last 40 years, but it is enjoyable, yes.
01:01How's Redcar changed over those years?
01:03Ooh, this end of town where I am, it's gone really quiet this past couple of years.
01:11We've lost Wilkinson's, we've lost Chilton Mills, and in the last couple of months we've just lost the two charity shops over the road
01:19and the beauticians as well next to us, so, yeah.
01:24And apparently some journalists reported that you can buy houses for as little as 20k, is that right?
01:30You can buy a little bedsit or something, a little flat for that leasehold when I've looked.
01:37We enjoyed a cheap and cheerful menu of homemade grub, nice, simple and hearty.
01:45But sadly, that's not changed the town centre, which Mike says is slowly changing, but it's all too slow.
01:55Redcar is full of industrial heritage.
01:58I've already said that Redcar is not what it once was, but apparently you can get a bedsit for as cheap as £20,000.
02:06It's home to the oldest lifeboat in the world, the Zetland Lifeboat Museum behind me.
02:12There's penguins and sculptures on the seafront.
02:15There's a new cinema, the cinema's been revamped.
02:18So there are signs of hope here, and there is a wonderful beach.
02:22And we're going to check out Pocitos or Pocitos.
02:25People can visit the Zetland Museum, which is home to the oldest surviving lifeboat.
02:32It's free to enter, although sadly it was closed when we went.
02:39The seafront itself remains stunning and full of hope, not to mention Pocitos, the home of the original lemon top ice cream.
02:50This family has been making the ice cream since the 1920s, and it's still going strong, despite the closure of many other shops.
03:02There are a few places remaining, such as the main arcade and, of course, those golden sandy beaches,
03:10which are a real highlight of any trip to Redcar, as well as the beacon, the new vertical pier.
03:17Yeah.
