00:00China, with her vast rivers and towering mountains, spans five time zones and thousands of miles.
00:19These spectacular peaks, diminishing waters.
00:30Sustaining countless forms of life.
00:39We will range far and wide, visiting some of the most fascinating corners of this enchanted land and admiring the charms of wild China.
01:00Our journey will begin at China's northernmost point.
01:09This is a place of extreme cold, where winter lasts for eight months of the year.
01:18But the freezing temperatures cannot daunt the spirit of some of the world's hardiest creatures.
01:29Our next stop will take us to the country's western frontier.
01:36Here, in the world's second largest shifting sand desert, we will observe the flightless crow and other marvels of this realm of extreme heat.
01:51China's northern tip forms part of northeast Asia.
02:02Every winter, the arrival of the cold front from Siberia causes the temperature to plummet sharply.
02:13For six months of the year, the Hilongjiang River, marking part of the border between China and Russia, is frozen over.
02:26At this point, the thousand-meter-wide river makes an abrupt turn, producing a sweeping loop.
02:42One of the unlikeliest local residents is the small and graceful roe deer.
02:58These agile creatures live in small herds of three to five.
03:07The roe deer is a common sight in these parts.
03:11Timid and ever vigilant, they often generate a strange beat when roaming the woodland.
03:23So that they can sprint to safety at the slightest hint of danger.
03:32South of the Hilongjiang River stand the greater Xinlan Mountains.
03:39This vast range extends southwestward for 1,400 kilometers.
03:46The distance from London to Rome.
03:53As China's northernmost major mountain range, it's covered with almost 8.4 million hectares of forests.
04:01This is China's largest cold-temperate forest.
04:09Here, the Xinlan Larch dominates the landscape.
04:18In September, when southern China is enjoying early autumn, temperatures in the Xinlan Mountains plunge to freezing point at night.
04:34The reindeer is an unlikely inhabitant of the woodland.
04:40For over three centuries, reindeer have lived alongside the indigenous Awenkes.
04:49The Awenkes are known as nomadic herders.
04:54In autumn, they lead their reindeer deep into the forest, where the habitat is richer.
05:07The Cladonia rangiferina they find along the way is a staple food for the reindeer.
05:18For the next few months, the herd will be left on its own to survive winter.
05:27West of the mountains lies the largest freshwater lake in northern China.
05:36Hulin Lake covers an area more than twice the size of Hong Kong.
05:46This vast lake is a major stopover for migratory birds, flying between East Asia and Australasia.
06:01More than 100,000 birds a year rest here and procreate.
06:10Towards the end of October, the lake pushes its fast freeze button.
06:18The migrating birds take the hint and set off for the south.
06:28With the polar vortex to the north shifting to drive the Siberian cold front towards the greater
06:34Shin-en Mountains, everything seems to be trapped beneath thick snow.
06:45Still, the sable is happy to make the most of the freezing winter.
06:57These small mammals, known for their luxuriant, velvety fur, develop up to 46 hairs in a single follicle.
07:11Roughly the size of a domestic cat, the cute sable is a fierce predator.
07:21It spotted its prey.
07:29But its sudden move alerts the titmouse.
07:36The sable is out and about following a heavy snowfall.
07:55But the twigs are too slender.
08:04So it has to give up.
08:12The vast Houlin Lake is frozen almost solid.
08:24So rapidly did it freeze that the ice crumbled under the strain.
08:32The scene of desolation this has left resembles a battlefield.
08:43Late January is the coldest time of the year in northern China.
08:52With temperatures of minus 40 in the mountains, the local inhabitants face a stern test.
09:07For the reindeer, there's plenty of frozen lichen to feed on.
09:16But they need something else to sustain them.
09:20Salt.
09:24Table salt has been left by the considerate Awenki herders.
09:31The reindeer come here to secure their vital salt intake.
09:41This is the largest wild boar species in China.
09:46They are capable of attacking with the ferocity of tigers.
09:53But to survive the cold, they huddle together for warmth.
10:06The deer may be better equipped than any other creature to survive the extreme cold.
10:16Deep in the forest, where the temperature can fall as low as minus 50, lives the world's largest deer, the moose.
10:37Standing two meters high at the shoulders, this giant species native to the northern hemisphere, numbers just 100 in China.
10:54The freezing cold occasionally offers a surprise.
11:00Amid temperatures of 30 degrees below zero, this quiet stream is emitting waves of steam.
11:09This is a sign of hope for all.
11:14However, the hot springs are sealed off by the cold air, so the water temperature barely reaches 2 or 3 degrees.
11:23There's no hot bath to be had here.
11:30As the long winter draws to a close, the forest echoes with an eerie noise.
11:46The black-billed caper cali is found only in Siberia and northeast China.
11:53Their mating call is clear and distinctive.
11:58A host of rivals are soon drawn to the scene.
12:04Two males are engaged in a vocal contest.
12:15This is a battle of stamina and endurance.
12:27The eight-month long winter is nearing its end.
12:34The local inhabitants are rousing themselves.
12:49The reindeer will soon be reunited with their herders.
13:00In China's northwest, six hours of uninterrupted snowfall has created a rare spectacle.
13:16It's not mountains that lie beneath the snow, but vast sand dunes.
13:28This is the world's second-largest shifting sand desert, the Taklamakan.
13:41This is one of the farthest places from the sea on the planet.
13:46At the heart of the Eurasian continent, and forming part of China's western frontier,
13:56other than to the east, it is entirely encircled by plateaus and mountains.
14:08To the north rises the world's largest independent mountain system, the Tian Shan.
14:19With an average altitude of 4,000 meters, and twice the length of the Alps.
14:29Bordering the desert to the south, and extending along the northern edge of the King Zhang Gawa,
14:36are the Kunlun Shan, rising to an average altitude of 5,400 meters.
14:48The vast rolling desert between these two mountain ranges is roughly the size of Germany.
15:01Starting in March, sandstorms shroud the area for six months.
15:07Carried and moved by gales, it forms the largest area of shifting sands in the world.
15:18Six centuries ago, the Silk Road extending to the Middle East and Europe gave rise to numerous trading towns in this area.
15:31But the relentless sands long ago devoured and consumed all the oasis here.
15:39In the sandy depths of the desert, a fascinating species of bird has found a way to survive.
15:52This remarkable creature has been shaped by the shifting sands.
16:00In adapting to the winds and sands, it has given up its ability to fly.
16:11And instead, become a superb runner.
16:15The Xinjiang ground jay, unique to the Takwamakan chamel, is one of the least known species of bird on Earth.
16:30With sandy-colored plumage, this member of the Crow family is smaller than most of its cousins.
16:40Occasionally, they take wing to reach a nest hidden among the branches.
16:54This is a critical survival period for the young.
16:59The parents take turns guarding the nest and gathering food.
17:06Where will they find sustenance?
17:18The search is thorough and ultimately successful.
17:27The chicks have emerged from their shells.
17:32It has found some succulent worms.
17:36But how it managed to locate the worms beneath the sand remains a mystery.
17:47At noon, below the pitiless sun, the desert swelters in temperatures of up to 70 degrees.
17:59Such intense heat cannot be ignored.
18:09But even the most stubborn desert can be transformed.
18:16In May, meltwater from the Kunlun Shan gathers into a stream, which advances northwards onto the desert.
18:29This is the sole waterway crossing the Takwamakan chamel, the Hotan River.
18:39This force of nature has given rise to a trail of life-giving oasis amid the vast expanse of sand.
18:48To avoid the sun and predators, the smaller creatures only emerge after sunset.
19:03The Yarkand hare, unique to the Takwamakan chamel, is known for its remarkable hearing ability.
19:16This little fellow is a rare sight around here.
19:19The three-toed jerboa has just woken from its winter slumber.
19:26With its short arms and unusually long legs and tail, it resembles a tiny kangaroo.
19:39In the dry environment, it has developed the ability to derive all its water intake solely from plants.
19:58At the heart of the desert, the Hotan River encounters a remarkable mountain range.
20:08It boasts a unique color scheme.
20:14Its north side is composed of gleaming dolomite.
20:20And it's south of reddish-brown sandstone.
20:27To the locals, it's known as the Red and White Mountains.
20:36This is the only mountain range Takwamakan chamel,
20:43which extends west to east for over 90 kilometers, as far as the Hotan River.
20:57The Hotan skirts one end of the Red and White Mountains,
21:02before flowing northward to join the Tarim River.
21:10On the banks of the Tarim River,
21:14lies the world's largest primeval Populus Euphratica forest.
21:22Every October,
21:25it's welcoming the hordes of migratory birds,
21:29for whom it is an important stopover on the desert's edge.
21:37The forest is also home to a beautiful species of deer.
21:42The Tarim Red Deer is the only red deer that inhabits a desert.
21:52The male, a solitary creature, stands up to two meters tall.
21:59The burden of raising the young falls on the females.
22:11This area is also inhabited by the charming red fox.
22:17The red fox is the most prominent part of the local wildlife.
22:22In Chinese legend, the red fox is a powerful spirit,
22:29capable of turning into an enchantress
22:32and conquering everyone she encounters with her glamour and cunning.
22:41But the encounter with the deer has unnerved it.
22:47After weighing its options,
22:51it takes the wise course and steers clear of the herd.
22:56Winter is coming.
23:06The migratory birds are ready to leave the desert for warmer climes down south.
23:19But which route will they choose?
23:24The answer is surprising.
23:29In the world's second largest shifting sand desert,
23:33the sandstorms can be treacherous.
23:39Yet the birds have decided to take the most dangerous route across the desert.
23:48This is the first time a film crew has recorded migrating birds at the Red and White Mountains.
23:59We're lucky enough to witness a formidable formation of black kites.
24:09The black kite is a medium-sized raptor standing at the top of the food chain.
24:17Never before has such a huge flock of black kites been filmed.
24:28The desert that was once crossed by the ancient Silk Road continues to shift amid the roaring gales.
24:38But even in the most hostile environment,
24:41life continues to survive and reproduce.
24:49Such is the way of the natural world.
