00:00Well here's the United States lineup and there's one change from the team which drew with Switzerland there
00:05and that is that Clay Coyman has tendinitis of the right knee.
00:09So one of the oldest players in the tournament, 37-year-old Fernando Clavijo, is drafted into defence.
00:15Eric Gwynnardo hasn't trained between the two games because of an allergy problem, but he's okay to start.
00:23It's warm here, it's in the 90s again. How many times have we said that so far from matches?
00:28And what an atmosphere in this Pasadena Rose Bowl, over 90,000 fans capacity here.
00:36The Colombian side, one major shock and that is that Maturana, the coach, has left out striker Adolfo Valencia
00:42who headed their goal against Romania and was a constant threat in that game.
00:46He's been admitted for tactical reasons and the diminutive Antony de Avilia has been brought in in his place
00:53and midfielder Gabriel Gomez has dropped to accommodate Hernan Gaviria in midfield.
00:58The Italian referee today, Fabio Baldas.
01:01And the heat again, a factor I suppose, was in the 90s.
01:07You were saying to me before the game, it's not easy for people to talk about it,
01:10but what is it like to play in this sort of heat?
01:12You can't, it's so difficult.
01:14You last about an hour, Europeans last about an hour in this heat and then they just dehydrate.
01:19But I'm sure that the lads back in the studio are very cool, they'll be thinking of this here.
01:22Colombia, yellow shirts and blue shorts and the red stockings get is underway then here in Pasadena in Los Angeles.
01:34It's a lovely surface.
01:35Some of the pictures, the grass has been left quite long, but this is not one of those.
01:41It's going to be interesting to see the way Colombia play here, having left Valencia out.
01:45Here is this little man, De Avilia.
01:47Able to make a good contribution first time, however, and America break quickly.
01:53Good tackle by Alvarez.
01:57And the first free kick awarded by the Italian referee.
02:02I haven't seen Stewart who had sort of made the break on his right hand side, but it was a great ball from far.
02:10Manly directed by Escobar.
02:12We all know Harkes is quick and he's forward again and the mark of the chance for Stewart here.
02:15Can America take an early lead, turned aside by Córdova, the goalkeeper who has to make an impression today.
02:23Well, they've certainly got behind the Colombian defence and again, good play by them.
02:31Stewart, a sloppy defending by the Colombians and Stewart who got in behind didn't quite get a hold of that.
02:36Well, look, organising things in there.
02:43Valderrama short, taking it back.
02:47And then Valderrama lifting one in, it's Laos' head, it's not gone very far, however.
02:52Little touch from Herrera to Rincon.
02:54Swim back in from Rincon, onside here, off Colombia, off the upright, sure it's going to go in.
03:02That's off the line from De'Avila.
03:05So, so close, Colombia should have been ahead there.
03:11All sorts of escapes for the American defence.
03:13It's a lovely ball laid over by Rincon, the done did America in the first instance.
03:18Here's De'Avila again, a smacking shot from him.
03:21Palmed down, effortlessly by Maiola.
03:24I really don't know how they could have not have scored here.
03:29Come off the bar, come off the post.
03:34Well built now.
03:35Herrera's having that ball inside the penalty area, and Rincon might get a shot on target here.
03:44Rincon getting through, the save mode by Maiola.
03:47Once again, they'd opened up the American defence.
03:50Very much a good, he looks entirely a very strong player indeed,
03:54and it was a good build-up by Colombia.
03:56Nice move, strong-looking player.
04:00Valderrama, again it's Rincon, and the bottle of Elma.
04:05And he's keen to get shot some target today, so I met him this time.
04:11And lucky again, didn't quite get a hold of it.
04:15He became a national hero four years ago in Italia 90,
04:18when he scored a late goal against West Germany, as they were then.
04:22And he got a lucky, bit of a lucky rebound there, but you know, his strength took him through.
04:27What can America have to try from this free kick?
04:35A build-up at the far corner, Dooley shouting for it, Lalas is up there as well.
04:39And here it is Lalas, it's Bjornheim.
04:41Well, it was Balboa that was picked out eventually, made a very good run there, Balboa.
04:47Well, we thought that the ball would be knocked over to Dooley.
04:49Dooley was certainly calling for it, but as it did come, the Colombians didn't pick up Balboa,
04:55and that was a great opportunity.
04:59That really was a great opportunity.
05:01Like Spice, for example.
05:02Not when he had everything, the Colombians were just still, and Balboa had a great opportunity to wreck that header, set their own target.
05:13Yeah, there's more opportunity for them, what a chance for Rinalda inside the area, Eric Rinalda!
05:19Clipped the upright!
05:19Will he get a better chance?
05:26The angle was acute, but he beat Cordova, and the ball just flicked off that upright, and went away from this man, Eric Rinalda.
05:36Gets into the penalty area well, holds them off, and that's unlucky, Dennis.
05:41Well, I'm just saying, that's the great thing about television, when you say that they can get a goal from Wolf and play.
05:45In the next second, it happened, that was...
05:48It's a giveaway.
05:55Sober.
06:00Calaguri, desperate to get up on the outside.
06:02Harkes, oh, it's going on goal!
06:04What a tragedy for the Colombian defence!
06:08Escobar, on goal!
06:12Well, there's nothing anybody can do about one of those.
06:15Harkes hitting the ball across, he was going nowhere, really.
06:19But Escobar stabs it, past his own goalkeeper, Cordova, and the American public goes wild!
06:27Well, you need a little bit of luck.
06:29In life, as in football, it was an absolutely awful shot.
06:33Escobar, unfortunately, trying to cut it out.
06:37Connects, and knocks it past his keeper.
06:39To be fair, Escobar hadn't have got it.
06:42Stewart was on the far side with the possibility, but the crowd here are unbelievably ecstatic.
06:50Oh, they're ecstatic!
06:52Oh, Uncle Sam is singing.
06:54I think that's the first home goal of USA 94.
06:57It's a very popular one, I can tell you, amongst these American supporters.
07:03Even John Harkes was surprised, wasn't he?
07:05Here comes Herrera, however, for Colombia.
07:08He's got to keep it in initially.
07:09He'll get the corner.
07:12Glass lifted the match again now.
07:13It's what the game needed.
07:15We've said it for many years, but we've seen these teller games.
07:18Alder arm of the cross, a clear header, surely too high.
07:21Top of the net.
07:23From Gaviria.
07:25But to be fair, we've been here for a little while now in the States,
07:31and the football has been unbelievably good, I think, anyway, for the first phase.
07:36The spectators have enjoyed it, and now that Harkes has sort of knocked it off Escobar,
07:45the United States have come in and they've played, they've defended well,
07:48they've ran very hard, didn't think they would score from open play,
07:52thought more of a free kick, but they've got the lucky break that gave them the lead.
07:56And they've done enough to forge a one-goal advantage after 45 minutes.
08:01The unlucky Andres Escobar here stabbing the ball past his own goalkeeper, Cordoba,
08:05from the John Harkes cross.
08:07The American flag is flying at the moment.
08:11It's the United States leading Colombia by a goal to nil.
08:14To Dallas, I'll let you into a little secret.
08:16The American success is all down to male bonding.
08:19I'm not kidding.
08:20The coach, Milutinovic, had them before the Swiss game.
08:23He had them the evening before, standing around the centre circle,
08:26holding hands with each other.
08:28Whether he was out there in Pasadena last night, I don't know, Ray,
08:31but something's working.
08:32Well, if you actually watched the way they play,
08:34and how hard they work for each other,
08:36you can see that there must be something amongst the squad.
08:38The spirit amongst their squad is absolutely magnificent.
08:41We're going to talk about an occasion here
08:43where Rincon hits a ball into the penalty area in a minute.
08:46And here it comes now.
08:47Rincon hits the most fantastic crossing.
08:50But just watch how these American guys work hard to get that ball away.
08:54It does hit a post.
08:55It comes off one of the American guys and hits a post.
08:58That's a fantastic ball in.
08:59I think it's Diavio that gets in on the far post.
09:02But just watch these guys now.
09:03It comes off the post, and there's the scramble.
09:06It's there, and these fellas are working their socks off to get it away.
09:09And if you're going to succeed in any walk of life,
09:12you have to work hard,
09:14and these guys are really working hard as an outfit.
09:16Ever heard of male bonding the football team's done?
09:19No, I haven't, no.
09:20We used to do a similar thing with the psychologist at QPR,
09:25and Ray used to have to be in the middle of the circle.
09:27Really?
09:28Yeah, oh, yeah.
09:28It's a way of motivation.
09:30Anyway, before the goal,
09:33they had two very good chances to have scored, didn't they?
09:35Oh, yes, they did.
09:37They worked their way back into the game.
09:38They're very fit, the United States.
09:40And this is a free kick.
09:41Comes into the back post.
09:44I mean, he's coming right under it.
09:45If Balbo just heads that down, he's got to score.
09:48I know he's a centre-back,
09:49and he's used to heading the ball in the air,
09:51but in that occasion,
09:52all he's got to do is head it downwards.
09:56And this time, I think you'll see,
09:59it's Wijnaldum who gets through.
10:01And he's always been a problem to the Colombian defence.
10:04I mean, he plays in Germany.
10:06A nice return ball.
10:07Now he's in.
10:08And he does everything right here.
10:09He hits it across the keeper.
10:11And he just wants the look of the roll of the ball.
10:14And he just pulls away,
10:15and it's the outside of the post.
10:16That was unlucky,
10:17because he did everything right.
10:20Now, Ray, the Colombians will be saying,
10:21own goal, what a shocker that was.
10:24But in fact, the ball from Harkes
10:25was split in that defence anyway, wasn't it?
10:27The cross shot from John Harkes was terrific, yes.
10:30He's had a very, very good World Cup as John Harkes.
10:33And we see him coming onto it now.
10:34He hits this cross shot across.
10:36And Escobar just can't.
10:37He's got to make a play for it,
10:39because Stewart's in behind him.
10:41His body shape could be a little bit out of order there, Escobar.
10:44But he sticks it in the back of the net.
10:46John Harkes, that was a tremendously driven ball, wasn't it?
10:49With his colleague coming in at the far post there.
10:51Yeah, Stewart's behind him, yeah.
10:52And the thing about the goalkeeper thought that the defender was going to miss it.
10:55That's why the goalkeeper was in the wrong place.
10:57So it invited panic, and that was the result.
11:00OK, fellas, we're going to go over live now to Orlando,
11:03where John Aldridge from the Irish camp is sitting, waiting to talk to us.
11:07John, hi.
11:08Can you hear me?
11:10Yes, fine, thanks.
11:10What do you think of that American performance so far?
11:14I think what Ray said's quite right.
11:16You know, they work very well for themselves,
11:17and the team spirit seems fantastic amongst them.
11:22And certainly on them tonight anyway.
11:24What do you make of this male bonding?
11:26I don't know whether you heard what we were saying.
11:27They'd all been out holding hands around the centre circle.
11:30Can you see Jack doing that with you boys?
11:32No, I don't think the lads would have that.
11:35We've got a couple of dodgy lads amongst us anyway.
11:39Yeah, do you actually see much of Jack when you're not training?
11:42I mean, what's he up to?
11:45No, he tends to lock himself up in his bedroom.
11:47He's got a Guinness bar in there,
11:48so he's having the time of his life there, I think.
11:51Don't you get invited in?
11:53He has a couple of times, to be fair.
11:54We've had a couple of Guinnesses with him.
11:56In a nutshell, I mean, you've been with him a long time.
12:00I mean, can you put your finger on what it is about Jack
12:02that inspires you blokes and gets you, you know,
12:05beating Italy, for goodness sake?
12:08No, obviously he's got charisma about him, Jack,
12:11and he's very good technically as well.
12:13You know, people don't give him the credit that he deserves
12:15on now stopping the likes of the Italians
12:18and these teams, you know, from playing against you.
12:21Yeah, well, you had a little play, didn't you, in that game,
12:23about a minute or so.
12:24You'll be hoping for a bit more than that.
12:27Yeah, it would have been nice,
12:28but at the end of the day, the result's the main thing.
12:31As long as we win, I'll settle for that every game.
12:33Yeah, have you noticed preparations change,
12:36you know, with the Mexico match in view on Friday?
12:39Is there anything new happening?
12:41Or do you think it's going to be a similar line-up?
12:44It will be the same line-up, I'm quite sure of that.
12:46You know, you can't drop any lads
12:48because they were all fantastic.
12:50So, with regards to the build-up,
12:52it's been quite as normal
12:56because we tend to, when we get in these situations,
12:59not trained.
13:00Jack likes to rest the lads in between the games
13:01and, you know, reserve the energy for the big matches.
13:04Sit round the pool, sunbathe?
13:06No, it doesn't allow that, unfortunately.
13:09You know, we just lock ourselves in our room
13:10or maybe go shopping.
13:12It's a bit boring.
13:14OK, well, we'll try and liven it up for you.
13:16We'll be having a chat with you a little later on
13:18and we'll be back preparing for the second half.
13:20America versus Colombia.
13:22Stay with us.
13:23A World Cup of shocks and surprises
13:25and Colombia in desperate straits now.
13:27What I can't understand is how Valderrama and Esprit
13:30seem to have disappeared, Don.
13:32Yeah, they're doing nothing.
13:32What's going on, Tony?
13:34Well, I don't think Esprit is making any runs.
13:36He seems to be sitting in and around the D
13:38and getting it to feet.
13:40I mean, when he's playing well,
13:41he's moving out in behind full-backs.
13:42He's going into wide positions
13:43and he's using his pace and his stride.
13:46Valderrama, well, Valderrama in this game,
13:49he's like a five-a-side player.
13:51Everything is short.
13:52Everything is five yards there
13:53and he wants every ball back.
13:55If he plays it to someone, he wants it back.
13:57He should be getting his head up
13:58and knocking balls in,
13:59looking for Esprit more often.
14:00I mean, front players have got to have service
14:04and it's the likes of Valderrama
14:05who ought to be given it
14:06rather than playing these short five yards.
14:08This is the second time he's not done it.
14:10But let's just have a word about the goalkeeper,
14:11Cordoba, as well, Ray,
14:12who's not exactly covering himself in glory, is he?
14:14No, he isn't.
14:15He is a young man, though, Tony, the goalkeeper.
14:17And I don't think we'd take into account the nerves as well.
14:19We've got a couple of shots here.
14:20This is a long ball going into the far post.
14:22What he is, he's an atrocious decision-maker.
14:25He makes decisions that he's just never going to get that.
14:29Or if he does, he should go and get it.
14:31And he ends up giving away a corner
14:33and feigning an injury
14:34because he's made himself look a bit silly.
14:36But he makes very bad decisions.
14:39We see this one here again.
14:40This is a long ball through.
14:42I think it's Stewart that's on the gallop.
14:44Now, his defender will deal with that
14:46or will have a better chance of dealing with it.
14:48That's another very poor decision.
14:50Now, if that would have dropped to John Harkes,
14:53who's been playing on that side of the field,
14:55he may well have scored.
14:56That's a bit like Taco, the Bolivian, wasn't it,
14:58when Germany scored in that opening game?
15:00Quite right.
15:01Suddenly out in the middle of nowhere.
15:02It's just bad decision-making.
15:04And in actual fact, that's been a highlight of this World Cup.
15:07We've seen some very poor goalkeeping, all bad decisions.
15:09And just very quickly, this is the team
15:11which thrashed Argentina 5-0 in the qualifying stages.
15:13Some people's favourites, Colombia,
15:15and they don't look like doing it, do they?
15:17They don't.
15:17Not today.
15:18Going forward, they're OK defensively.
15:19They look poor and the goalkeeper gives them no confidence.
15:21Tony, they're overrated.
15:23They were virtually made favourites
15:25because Pelle all of a sudden decided to say
15:27Colombia are going to win the World Cup.
15:29And then they went down to Buenos Aires
15:31and beat Argentina 5-0.
15:33And from then on in,
15:34they've been saying they're going to win the World Cup.
15:36You can't see them doing it, can you?
15:37Can't at the moment,
15:38but they're about to kick off for the second half.
15:40So let's go back to Pasadena
15:41and rejoin John Helm.
15:45Thank you, Tony.
15:46And we noticed straight away that Colombia have made an alteration
15:49to their line-up for the second half
15:51and they have brought on even Valenciano.
15:53And the player who has gone off has been De'Aviglia.
15:58The diminutive De'Aviglia who started briskly
16:01but sort of faded a little bit as the half went on.
16:04So Valenciano on, but not Valencia, Dennis.
16:07No, I'm surprised at that.
16:09So we said before the game
16:10that Valencia looked the best player actually against Romania
16:14and not even in the team.
16:16But Valenciano is not a bad player as well
16:18and De'Aviglia hadn't done anything particularly
16:22to take over from Valencia.
16:27Can't see any changes out there for the United States
16:30as they restart the game.
16:32And I would think that Wladimir Tinovic
16:33will be very, very happy
16:34with the way things have gone so far in this game.
16:36And it is so important for the Americans.
16:39As you can say, I think you'll be absolutely delighted.
16:41Well, Roy Wegerley was making the point
16:43before the World Cup
16:44that the performance of the team
16:46was critical to the very future of the game here.
16:48Very much so.
16:49And I think that any sort of...
16:51...neutral.
16:52We hope that the United States
16:55get through to the second phase.
16:57And the way that they've played today
16:59is certainly candida.
17:06Stewart
17:07and letting it over to that far side.
17:11Easily collected this time by Codoba.
17:13And there is Valenciano.
17:26World Cup rules this year allow them
17:34to bring on two substitutes
17:35and a substitute goalkeeper
17:37should the goalkeeper get injured.
17:39That one's going to trickle through.
17:41And Lalis will have the ball into the net
17:43for America,
17:44but there's going to be no goal.
17:45And Lalis gets a yellow card as well.
17:48But, well, whether he heard the whistle,
17:50I could imagine in this din
17:51you might not hear the whistle.
17:52And Lalis, to be fair to him,
17:53just carried on.
17:55Smash the ball into the net
17:56and then turn around to find himself
17:58getting a yellow card.
17:59Well, I think he was very unlucky there.
18:02You see in this particular din
18:03that he might have had it.
18:05And I didn't think he was off-says' enemy.
18:06I don't...
18:07There was no way in the world
18:08he was off-says there.
18:10He was lineman at the least.
18:18Dooley forward.
18:19Nice to switch down here to Ramos.
18:24Tom Ramos.
18:26Good ball played in here.
18:27This could be a second for Stewart.
18:29And America go two goals ahead.
18:33What a delightful pass
18:35and what a clinical finish.
18:38Ernest Stewart,
18:39they feel they're on their way
18:41into the second phase.
18:43Well, the Colombian defence
18:45all at six and seven
18:47sort of stalling about.
18:50Not picking up anybody whatsoever.
18:53Ramos.
18:55Beautiful through ball to Stewart.
18:57You saw the goalkeeper come up.
18:59Lobbed it over Cordova.
19:00Into the goal for the second goal.
19:02A really,
19:02a really good goal.
19:04The United States of America too.
19:07Colombia nil.
19:09Well clipped in here by Stewart.
19:11And are Colombia
19:12one of the favourites
19:13on their way home?
19:16You can't believe it.
19:18Well,
19:18they haven't got a point.
19:20They've got to do something
19:21really dramatic now.
19:22And Valenciana might do that.
19:24He's inside that area.
19:25Save is made
19:26by Miola.
19:29And what a start
19:30to the second half.
19:31That's really
19:31lifted this crowd
19:34as if they weren't
19:34lifting up already.
19:35Well, I think justice was done.
19:37I think Lala's goal
19:38was a legit goal.
19:39It's through again, Stewart.
19:42Well, that was definitely
19:42a legit goal, as you say.
19:44Rinalda,
19:45full of confidence now.
19:47They're bristling.
19:53And the Colombian heads
19:54must be in very grave danger
19:56of going down,
19:57extremely.
19:59And I was just saying
20:00about Valderrama
20:01having to perform now.
20:08And he really has been
20:09on the fringe,
20:10hasn't he, of everything.
20:12Valderrama,
20:13there he is again,
20:13just playing the short,
20:14easy ball back.
20:17Valenciano's just done
20:18one very good turn
20:19inside that penalty area.
20:20If they come back
20:21out of this,
20:22then Colombia
20:23from the lucky stars,
20:25really.
20:29Hux.
20:39Alvarez
20:39picking it up now,
20:41and Valencia.
20:42He hasn't got us
20:43really to play with
20:44at the moment.
20:44Here is Valderrama,
20:45and it's not a good
20:46enough ball again
20:47from him.
20:49And it gives me
20:50the chance to
20:51bring in Don Howe
20:52in the studio
20:52for a quick word.
20:53Don, is there any
20:54way back from this now?
20:56Well, John,
20:57I mean, they do look
20:58in trouble, don't they?
20:59I mean, they keep
20:59trying to get through
21:00the D.
21:01And all the Americans
21:03are doing
21:03is just packing the D
21:05and they can't get through.
21:06They need to get
21:07a little bit of width.
21:07They need to get
21:08their full backs forward
21:09down the lines,
21:10go for a little bit
21:11more width,
21:12and try and get
21:12a few crosses
21:13in behind the back
21:14of that American defence.
21:16What about the switch, Don?
21:17Are you surprised
21:18that Machirano
21:18hasn't played
21:19the two together,
21:20Valencia and Aspirilla?
21:21Well, he's searching
21:22for something, John,
21:23and he doesn't know himself,
21:25so he's giving
21:25this lad, Valenciano,
21:27a chance.
21:28At least he's doing
21:28something.
21:30But why,
21:31I mean, obviously,
21:32Aspirilla,
21:33that's why we were
21:34talking at half-time
21:35about Aspirilla.
21:36He's not having
21:36a good World Cup.
21:37So he's searching
21:38for something
21:39that's just not there.
21:41Thank you, Don.
21:43Don't forget the third
21:44of the games
21:45that the Colombians
21:46have to play.
21:48It's going to come
21:48in this group,
21:49of course,
21:49is against Romania
21:50and that puts
21:51enormous pressure
21:52on them again.
21:53If they don't win that,
21:54of course,
21:54they're on their way.
21:55They might be
21:55on their way anyway.
21:57With Romania
21:58having got three points,
22:00Switzerland four,
22:01and the United States
22:02at this moment
22:03on their way
22:04to four points,
22:04it would seem.
22:05Well, it is incredible
22:06when you looked at the group
22:07before a game
22:08had been played
22:09and if the result
22:10stays as it is
22:11or America go on
22:12to win,
22:12you would have had
22:13big odds
22:14for Switzerland
22:15and the United States
22:17to go through
22:17in place of
22:18Colombia and Romania.
22:20If it could happen
22:21in the Ireland group
22:21with Italy as well.
22:24That's a nice little touch
22:25and this might open
22:25the way here
22:26for Valencia.
22:27He'll lift swiftly
22:28off his line.
22:31And he's come out
22:31for everything,
22:32hasn't he?
22:32He's done everything right.
22:34It's 2-0 today
22:35at the moment.
22:37Firmly in the driving seat.
22:38And Lallis has had
22:41one disallowed
22:42which should have
22:42counted as well.
22:44Colombia in trouble,
22:45there is Lallis.
22:46And the save made
22:48is a superb
22:49flick header
22:49from Alexia Lallis.
22:52The rock and roller,
22:53the gypsies
22:54who are his band,
22:55he would have been
22:56singing a fine tune
22:57tonight, wouldn't he?
22:57Well, that's where
22:58they are dangers
22:59at set situations,
23:00free kicks
23:01and to be fair
23:03to the keeper,
23:04that was a fine save.
23:05Ramos who made
23:09the second goal.
23:11A delightful pass.
23:13Skewer who scored it.
23:15Ramos again.
23:16They're flowing now
23:17and Ramos cuts inside.
23:19Wengli was calling
23:19for his edge of the area.
23:21Still is 10, Ramos.
23:22Beaten away
23:23by the goalkeeper,
23:24Cordoba.
23:25Could have been three,
23:26it could have been four
23:26this half.
23:28Very, very unlucky.
23:29Ramos has looked
23:30indeed an excellent player.
23:32Let's look at Rincón
23:33now for Colombia
23:34though,
23:34this is their response.
23:36And Balboa gets in
23:38and you just feel
23:40the American team
23:41is on such a high,
23:42the crowd are roaring
23:43them up.
23:45As I say,
23:46they're doing
23:46everything right
23:47and they're not doing
23:48what happened to Spain
23:50when they were leaving
23:512-0 against Korea.
23:52They tend to think
23:53that the game was all over
23:54and relaxed a bit
23:56and we know
23:56that the Koreans
23:57came back
23:57to draw 2-2.
23:59Not so the United States,
24:01they're going for the third
24:02and even when they're
24:03attacking,
24:04they're keeping people
24:05back at the same time
24:06making sure that
24:06Colombia don't make
24:07a quick break.
24:09And they got the lucky break
24:10when they needed it,
24:11didn't they?
24:11The own goal.
24:13Here come Colombia again
24:14inside that penalty
24:15with Valenciano
24:16who decides to try his luck
24:18and a corner kick.
24:22Valenciano had a spell
24:24playing abroad
24:24in Europe
24:25with Atalanta in Italy
24:26but he didn't fancy it
24:27too much over there.
24:28It didn't work out for him
24:29and he's come back now
24:30to play
24:32here in the South America.
24:37He scored six goals
24:39in the Olympic qualifiers
24:40for Barcelona
24:40a couple of years ago.
24:42They so badly need
24:43a single goal now
24:44and here's a header
24:45which is blocked out
24:46of the air
24:46by Miola
24:47and the crowd roar.
24:51Well, as we said
24:52earlier on,
24:53Miola has done
24:54everything right.
24:56He was a good header,
24:57came in through
24:57the record players
24:58and the record players
24:58fortunately for him
25:00it wasn't quite at him
25:02but they're coming in
25:03behind the Colombian defence
25:04getting the ball
25:05into the penitentiary.
25:07Just over ten minutes left.
25:09United States leading 2-0
25:10in the corner for them.
25:12Tam Ramos with it.
25:14Hoisted there.
25:16My word,
25:17that would have been
25:18Balboa
25:20that's finished behind the net.
25:23You'd have thought he'd scored,
25:24wouldn't you?
25:24The way he responded as well.
25:25Oh, look, Miola's still
25:26lapping about it.
25:27Oh, dear.
25:28He said it.
25:29Very close.
25:30We can't see from this angle
25:31up here.
25:32I'd like to see the replay.
25:33Well, here we go.
25:34It really was.
25:35A long and a...
25:36What a fantastic...
25:38Oh, he was right.
25:39What a shame.
25:40He was right.
25:41Three...
25:41Columbia's free kick.
25:46Short for Valencia
25:48for Valderrama.
25:52Rink on.
25:52Oh, they got in
25:55each other's way.
25:56Oh, and even now
25:58it doesn't produce
26:00a goal for Valencia.
26:02That was the only occasion
26:03where there has been
26:04a mistake at the heart
26:05of the American defence.
26:06Does that not sum up
26:07Columbia's day?
26:08I'll just say that
26:09definitely the United States day.
26:11The first time
26:13a mistake.
26:19If they do get beaten today,
26:21Switzerland at least
26:22know that
26:22where we're going through
26:24with the rights they've got.
26:29The United States
26:30would appear.
26:31Here's Valencia again.
26:32Rink on.
26:33And stayed by the
26:34Oren.
26:35Must be a goal.
26:36They've finally got one.
26:37And it is Valencia.
26:39But it must surely
26:40have come too late.
26:44We're on the
26:4545-minute mark.
26:47right on the
26:5045-minute mark.
26:52And at long last
26:53Miola beaten.
26:55But surely,
26:56surely much, much
26:57too late for Columbia.
26:58Oh, I would think so, yes.
27:00The time is up.
27:02They've got
27:02certainly got the break.
27:03Miola was very unlucky.
27:05It was a good save,
27:06but Valencia came
27:07and followed up
27:07and knocked the end of it.
27:09They'll be
27:09very disappointed
27:10that it came that late
27:11as well,
27:12because at least
27:12if they knocked it
27:13five minutes earlier,
27:14they'll give them
27:14a slight chance,
27:15but for me,
27:16too late.
27:16The only thing
27:19it does do
27:19is improve
27:20their goal difference
27:21at this stage.
27:28We are playing
27:29out time
27:30here in Los Angeles.
27:32A free kick
27:32for the United States.
27:34A goal by Valencia
27:47right on the
27:4890-minute mark.
27:51If only Columbia
27:52had scored that
27:52even five minutes
27:53before,
27:54we would have had
27:55a fantastic finish,
27:56but as it is,
27:57you have got to say
27:58that the United States
27:59in front of their own
28:00fans are firm
28:02favourites here
28:03for the three points.
28:04It's been a game
28:08of fits and starts.
28:09Maybe they can get
28:09a third goal themselves.
28:12They've only got
28:13two men inside
28:14the penalty area.
28:15Wengerley and Jones.
28:18Typical time-wasting.
28:19One expects...
28:32The arms are raised
28:34aloft.
28:34The star-spangled
28:36batters,
28:36the stripes.
28:38What a day
28:38for the United States
28:40and America.
28:40They feel they are
28:41going through here.
28:43Columbia destroyed.
28:47Ecstasy around
28:48the Pasadena Rose Bowl.
28:50A first-half home goal
28:51from Andres Escobar.
28:53A second-half strike
28:54from Ernie Stewart.
28:57Good enough.
28:57And the fans of America
29:00go wild.
29:01Soccer really has
29:02arrived in the United
29:03States there.
29:04Skipper Miola
29:04thrilled.
29:06He leads the charge
29:07away from the dressing
29:08room.
29:08It's the United States
29:102,
29:10Colombia 1.
29:12Let's go back
29:13to the studio.
