00:00A gente não tem mais de 20 mil pessoas
00:11spread across vasta land,
00:13a growing middle class
00:14and a prime spot
00:15between Europe and East Asia.
00:17Kazakhstan is well positioned
00:19for aviation growth.
00:20But is air travel really taking off?
00:23And what might fuel
00:23Kazakhstan's rise
00:25as a midway hub?
00:26Welcome to East-West Connect.
00:30We're highlighting business
00:31and economic developments
00:32in Kazakhstan
00:33and the wider Central Asia region,
00:35connecting with Europe and beyond.
00:37It's been six years
00:38since Kazakhstan adopted
00:40its Open Skies policy,
00:41opening the door
00:42to greater global connectivity.
00:44The fifth freedom of the air
00:45now allows foreign airlines
00:46to stop in Kazakhstan
00:48en route to a third country.
00:50As of last year,
00:50the policy covers
00:5115 airports nationwide.
00:53Recently, the EU removed Kazakhstan
00:55from its aviation blacklist.
00:57The country's compliance
00:58with global safety standards
00:59now stands at 82%
01:01above the world average.
01:03It is on par with EU members
01:05like Denmark and Poland,
01:06placing it first
01:07in the Commonwealth
01:08of Independent States region.
01:10One thing Kazakhstan was missing
01:12but is setting up now
01:13is a specialized
01:14air incident investigation center.
01:16It is one of the key
01:17safety indicators
01:18tracked by the
01:19International Civil Aviation Organization
01:21or ICAO.
01:22It became especially relevant
01:24after the crash of an
01:25Azerbaijani-Azal Airlines aircraft
01:27near Aktau in December last year.
01:29Kazakhstan and ICAO
01:31are drafting a civil aviation
01:32master plan through 2050,
01:34covering everything
01:35from airport development
01:36and air navigation
01:37to safety and airline expansion.
01:40Within five years,
01:41the Ministry of Transport
01:42expects passenger traffic
01:43to hit 26 million
01:45with 200 international routes
01:47and a fleet of over 220 aircraft.
01:50Last year, Kazakhstan's air companies
01:51opened 12 new international routes
01:53including Mumbai,
01:55Prague and Jeddah
01:56with 16 more expected this year
01:58including Rome, Shanghai
01:59and Belgrade.
02:00Kazakhstan's aviation sector
02:02comprises of the national carrier
02:04Air Astana,
02:05its low-cost arm,
02:06Flyaristan,
02:07Private Scott Airlines
02:08and Kazakh Air.
02:10Kazakhstan is the only country
02:11in Central Asia
02:12to list its national airline
02:14Air Astana.
02:15Now the region's leader
02:16by market share and awards
02:17is headed by
02:18CEO Peter Foster
02:20who shared his insights
02:21on the industry's growth.
02:25Mr. Foster, welcome.
02:26Thank you.
02:27How do you assess
02:27investor sentiment
02:28following Air Astana's IPO
02:30and what strategy do you plan
02:31to implement
02:32to maintain shareholder value?
02:33We have recently announced
02:34a very substantial dividend,
02:36in fact the largest dividend
02:38that we've ever paid
02:39and one of the largest dividends
02:42in the airline industry today
02:43and that's a reflection
02:44of the strong performance,
02:45of the strong balance sheet,
02:46of the strong cash balance,
02:47The key really is
02:49to keep focused on cost
02:50and keeping cost competitive
02:51to maximise service levels
02:54to ensure top class
02:55safety standards.
02:57You've outlined
02:57major strategic opportunities
02:58for growth
02:59in the Gulf,
03:01Western Europe,
03:02China,
03:03Korea and Japan
03:04and India.
03:05What would these
03:06partnerships entail?
03:07So we're presently
03:08in discussions
03:09with China Southern
03:10in China,
03:11we're having discussions
03:12with carriers in India,
03:14we've recently signed
03:15a code share
03:16with Japan Airlines
03:17for the Japanese market,
03:19other areas
03:20in which we can cooperate.
03:21In maintenance,
03:22for example,
03:23here we're having
03:23this interview
03:24in our hangar,
03:26which has a full
03:27MRO maintenance capability
03:29for Airbus Fleet.
03:31We've just established
03:32a new company,
03:33Aerostana Terminal Services,
03:35which will provide
03:36a range of airport services
03:39at airlines in Kazakhstan
03:40and perhaps beyond
03:41Kazakhstan as well.
03:42Mr. Foster,
03:43thank you so much
03:43for your time today.
03:44Not at all.
03:45Thank you.
03:47The government
03:48is opening its skies
03:49to foreign low-cost airlines
03:51such as India's SpiceJet,
03:52South Korea's East StarJet
03:53and T-Way Air
03:55and Thailand's AirAsiaX.
03:57Kazakhstan's
03:57sovereign wealth fund
03:58Samru Kazana
03:59oversees major deals
04:00involving the country's airlines.
04:02Let's take a closer look.
04:06Aerostana's value
04:07has surged 50-fold
04:08since 2001
04:09to over 700 million euros.
04:11It became the first
04:12Kazakh company
04:12to list shares
04:13on three exchanges,
04:14London, Astana
04:15and Kazakhstan
04:16through an IPO
04:17led by Samru Kazana.
04:18The airline has topped
04:19Skytrax rankings
04:20in the region

05:01and Chinese.

05:03of routes

05:0670 destinations.
05:07We view Aerostana
05:09as a catalyst
05:10for economic growth
05:11in the region
05:12because not only
05:13we employ
05:14more than 6,000 people,

06:20How advanced are the plans
06:21to develop an intermodal hub
06:23in Kazakhstan
06:23and how would that strengthen
06:24the country's transit potential
