Cardiff households could save under new BBC licence fee linked to property value

00:06The broadcaster's chairman wants to scrap the flat £174.50 licence fee

00:12and instead charge households based on property value linked to council tax bans.

00:17In Cardiff, nearly 70% of homes are in bands A to C, meaning most would likely pay less under the new model.

00:24Ban D council tax in the city averages just under £1,800 a year.

00:29The BBC says around 89% of adults in Wales use its services each week,

00:34with funding supporting local outlets like BBC Wales Today and BBC Radio Cymru.

00:39Wales also has one of the highest licence fee evasion rates, estimated at over 10% in some parts.

00:46Supporters say the new model could make payments fairer,

00:49but any change would require government approval and public consultation.

00:53For now, the existing system remains in place, but change could be coming.
