00:00Causes of OA are not fully understood. Lots of research is being done, but there are links and
00:15associations with genetics, age, BMI, occupation, and female sex. So females are more predisposed
00:23to getting osteoarthritis than males. How do we diagnose osteoarthritis? If you have a painful
00:28knee joint, you'll see some help from your GP or a physio or a consultant surgeon like
00:32myself. And what I would do is speak to you and take a full history about what's been
00:37happening with the joint, what your symptoms are, how severe the symptoms are, when they
00:41affect you. This will be followed by an examination of the knee, followed by investigations. And
00:47the most common investigation carried out is an X-ray of the knee joint, which can show
00:52the level of arthritis that exists. If the knee joint appears to be healthy on X-rays, then
00:57an MRI scan would be indicated, which might show early osteoarthritis rather later.
