00:00From ash to coral, the underwater legacy that revives our oceans.
00:05Just like the mythical phoenix that rises from the ashes,
00:08the oceans, currently degraded by human action,
00:11can find a new beginning.
00:14But this time, that rebirth can come from our own ashes.
00:19A report on the website Um Só Planeta highlights the innovative proposal
00:23from the British startup Hasting Reef,
00:26who is revitalizing the funeral industry with a unique idea,
00:29transform human ashes into underwater artificial reefs.
00:33Hasting Reef offers a different kind of memorial.
00:37The ashes are combined with ground oyster shells and concrete,
00:41shaped into reef structures that actively promote marine life.
00:46Aura Pérez, one of the founders, explains the philosophy behind the initiative
00:51cemeteries should reconnect us with nature
00:53and remind us that we are part of a larger ecosystem.
00:56The process uses aquamation,
00:59an alternative to traditional cremation that uses alkaline solutions.
01:03The resulting material is 3D printed,
01:07creating different shapes with textures and tunnels
01:09which serve as shelter for several marine species.
01:13Once ready,
01:14the reefs are installed at about 10 meters depth,
01:18contributing to the regeneration of biodiversity,
01:20water filtration and prevention of coastal erosion.
01:23Each structure has the potential to capture up to 2.2 million kilos
01:29of carbon dioxide in 3 years.
01:32From pets to humans
01:34The Resting Riff initiative started in Bali last year,
01:39with the creation of 24 reefs using pet ashes.
01:44The success was so remarkable that the company is now expanding
01:47to include human ashes.
01:48The funeral sector needs to change, says Pérez,
01:52we want to transform the death industry
01:54into one that promotes life and growth.
01:57The results in Bali are impressive.
02:00Areas with coral reefs are home to 12 times more marine life
02:04than places without them,
02:05attracting 59 different species.
02:08The company's goal goes beyond offering a dignified farewell,
02:12we seek a legacy that literally gives new life to the oceans.
02:16Now the company is in the licensing process
02:20to install artificial reefs on the Plaima of Breakwater,
02:24located in the south of England.
02:27Recognition and awards
02:28This environmentally conscious proposal
02:31has already achieved international recognition.
02:34Resting Riff was the winner of the Terra Carta Design Lea B,
02:38a competition created by King Charles III
02:40and by designer Johnny Eve,
02:42in addition to having received a scholarship from INU Veit Yuki.
02:46The founders were also included
02:48on the prestigious Forbes Tirt and Under Tirt list
02:51in the Social Impact category.
02:54This innovation offers a new perspective
02:56about life and death,
02:58uniting the memory of loved ones
02:59with the vitality of our oceans.
