Chinese Citizens in Taiwan's Military

A Taiwanese lawmaker is proposing a legal amendment to address national security concerns over citizens who obtain Chinese citizenship but are still required to serve in Taiwan’s military. Democratic Progressive Party legislator Puma Shen warned that such individuals could gain access to sensitive military information, posing a security risk. The proposal follows a government notice sent to nine former Taiwanese citizens—now holding Chinese nationality—reminding them of their obligation to complete compulsory military service. Despite concerns, Taiwan’s Interior Ministry says the rule is meant to prevent individuals from using Chinese citizenship to evade military duty.
