Kyle Crabbs discusses the ongoing quarterback battle happening for the Indianapolis Colts between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones
Transcript
00:00The Indianapolis Colts are home to the league's best quarterback battle this summer,
00:05and I don't think Anthony Richardson's shoulder injury is going to change a thing
00:09about the looming outcome.
00:14I'm Kyle Krabs with A to Z Sports, and the Colts are holding a quarterback battle royale
00:19this summer between former top draft choice Anthony Richardson and free agent signing
00:24Daniel Jones. Richardson standing in this quarterback competition has been put under
00:30the microscope with the latest revelation that yet another injury is preventing him
00:35from collecting the one thing that he needs perhaps more than any other quarterback in
00:42the league. Reps. Anthony Richardson, going back to his freshman year of college, has
00:48collected just over an average of 350 live snaps per season over the last five seasons,
00:56and that lack of playing time and lack of consistent opportunities to play, learn, and develop
01:03has him on the hot seat as the Colts' starting quarterback.
01:07And for my opinion, when the Colts put Jim Ursa in the ring of honor in week one with their
01:13home opener against the Miami Dolphins, whether Richardson's back in time for the
01:18start of training camp or not, it doesn't matter. Daniel Jones has the inside track to this job.
01:24And for Daniel Jones, I think his path and how it's changed from New York to Indianapolis
01:29has him well-equipped. The fact that he's now collecting and building chemistry in the
01:36off-season program with names like Tyler Warren and Josh Downs only gives him more momentum.
01:43Daniel Jones, once upon a time, had to be a top 10 draft choice and go play in the new
01:48York market, which is absolutely vicious. Sometimes a change of scenery can go a long
01:55way in a player taking that pressure off and living up to their potential. Richardson has
02:01been in Indianapolis as their marquee investment, but hasn't been able to stay healthy or keep
02:07himself conditioned to not remove himself from a game or whatever goofy incidences have happened
02:13for Richardson over the course of his first two seasons. That all weighs on Anthony Richardson.
02:19And as a player who is grossly under-repped at the position, when you are going against a player who
02:26had to go from the big market of New York to a smaller market in Indianapolis, has a fresh start,
02:33has more experience, and is now collecting your reps with the pass catchers to build chemistry,
02:38it all seems to be building towards Anthony Richardson running out of time. It's an unfortunate
02:45set of circumstances, but it is the gamble that the Colts signed themselves up for when they drafted
02:50Richardson in the first place. The selling point was a Josh Allen type of raw passer with elite
02:57physical tools, but Josh Allen had almost as many snaps as Richardson had the last five years during
03:05Allen's last two years at Wyoming only. And in his first two years in the NFL, Josh Allen collected
03:12more snaps than Richardson has in the last five years. So if you're going to take the raw quarterback
03:17with the elite tools and needs to play, that quarterback then needs to play. And we're at the
03:24tipping point where people's jobs are going to be under the microscope in Indianapolis. And that's
03:29general manager Chris Ballard. That's head coach Shane Steichen. They cannot afford to wait
03:35any longer on that investment or else all of these parties are going to be out. And because of that,
03:42I think Daniel Jones is going to be behind center when the Colts open in week one against the Dolphins.
