FunTranscript
00:01We first started talking about making a movie over a decade ago.
00:06We really wanted to honor the world.
00:09It's super fun to see everything, all the details.
00:12And I can't wait to see it all come alive on the screen.
00:15It is an open world.
00:17As a kid playing Minecraft, it always felt so big.
00:21This game has been loved by millions all over the world for years now.
00:25Minecraft, it's coming to life!
00:29Alright, let's do it! And...
00:32Minecraft is full of opportunities for adventures.
00:35Each person's journey is different.
00:37When we were developing this into a film, we just thought, let's bring our fun story.
00:41It's very intentional that this movie is called a Minecraft movie, as opposed to the Minecraft movie.
00:51A Minecraft movie takes place in the real world and the Minecraft universe.
00:57You see Steve wishing he was able to just do whatever he wants and let his imagination run wild.
01:03I play Garrett the Garbage Man Garrison.
01:07He has this history of being this great video gamer from the 80s, and he's been holding onto that.
01:13And he hasn't moved past that life when he was on top.
01:19He's a huge fan of pink. He looks good.
01:21Right now, he's definitely this burnout who got fame from a very young age.
01:24And I don't think he's ever had a hug.
01:26So what about you? Are you on the lam?
01:28Henry is like basically the mother, the person who takes the vanilla game and tweaks it and adjusts it.
01:33He literally has to create to survive.
01:35Great. Now it's dark.
01:40All players have this experience of the first night.
01:44Very quickly the sun sets and things change dramatically.
01:47They really did not hold back.
01:50We have zombies. Oh, and the skeletons.
01:53And we shouldn't forget the most famous Minecraft mob, the creeper.
01:57It's been really exciting taking things that are part of the community's lives and trying to adapt it.
02:06You're gonna love how beautiful this world has become using all of the elements of the video game.
02:12Everything's cubic.
02:13So square trees, square fruit, square trunks, square grass, square flowers.
02:18The players had a big influence on the movie.
02:21We asked Mambo Jumbo to help us. He went up building quite a bit.
02:24This was something that I actually worked on with Jared.
02:27Cactus is being launched as the Minecraft player.
02:30We know how precious this is to a global gaming community.
02:35We're so excited to be able to share this.
02:37Minecraft is one of the biggest beautiful worlds you can make.
02:40Yeah!
02:43This movie is a joyful celebration of everything about Minecraft and creativity.
02:49That's one of the great things about Minecraft.
02:52If you wanna survive, you gotta be creative.
02:58Action!
02:59Guys, I've read about this.
03:00We're experiencing a shared delusion.
03:04When I was offered the role of Natalie, it felt like such a cool opportunity to bring together my love of acting and Minecraft.
03:10I was blown away when I stepped on set for the first time.
03:14It sunk in that I was in Minecraft.
03:16It was such a cool moment seeing all the set pieces come together.
03:19It was the details that really stuck out to me though.
03:22The life-size blocky trees, the cute potatoes, and how interactive the village set was.
03:27Oh my gosh, it's so cute.
03:29It felt spot on.
03:31Like I was walking right into the game.
03:34Mouth open.
03:35Here we go.
03:36Set.
03:37Set.
03:38Set.
03:39Set.
03:40Set.
03:41Set.
03:42Set.
03:43Set.
03:44Set.
03:45Set the fuck up.
03:47We do have a ball.
03:48If I said that I didn't try to make them laugh while they were on camera and ruin a take once in a while, I'd be lying.
03:57They would be too, because they've done it to me too.
03:59So that's always kind of the magical line that you want to ride.
04:04And I think we have in this movie where you want to get the day.
04:09There's a lot of actual work to be done.
04:11You've got to remember all those lines.
04:12You've got to hit all those marks and do all those props.
04:15But you also want to have fun doing it.
04:19Not to the point where you're ruining every take by laughing every take on every line,
04:23but to the point where it doesn't feel like work when it feels like we're just having a ball.
04:29That's the magic ingredient.
04:30I think the work is better when you're having fun.
04:33Maybe that's just me.
04:34But we definitely had some fun on this one.
04:36Woo!
04:37Lookie, lookie here.
04:39Welcome to the Redstone Mines.
04:41You see that glowy stuff?
04:43Redstone.
04:45Conducts energy.
04:46You can build some crazy contractions with it.
04:48I thought you were with diamond, right?
04:49Okay, relax, big dog.
04:51They're here.
04:52Stunt-wise, Danielle and I were in there quite a bit.
04:58I've never done sword fighting before, so I've been learning how to do that.
05:02I've been learning how to use a garden hoe and a shovel and a sword and all sorts of things.
05:09And it's been really fun choreographing all the fight scenes because I love that me and Danielle get to do it together.
05:14It's so fun with her.
05:16Just two girls kicking butt.
05:18We love it.
05:19The stunts is hard, hard work.
05:22Never done that sort of thing before.
05:24But in the end, it's totally worth it.
05:26I love doing stunts, so it's been really fun.
05:29So I love doing stunts, and we got to do a lot of different stunts.
05:34There's been a lot of running, a lot of screaming while I'm running.
05:38It's been a lot of fighting with swords and stuff, and it's been really cool.
05:43The stunt crew is phenomenal, working with my stunt double, Nayila.
05:48She's been phenomenal, and they've really made sure that we were safe while doing all of this, because it is a lot of, like, being harnessed and flying through walls and portals.
06:01So you really have to be careful, but we had a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed it.
06:07It's insane to have to keep a straight face around Jack when you're, like, really into it.
06:26And there are scenes where I'm, like, I can't stop.
06:29But there's, I think there's four solid moments where top two laughs in my life, and I just was, it was crying, crying and trying to keep a straight face.
06:40And poor Emma, I'm ruining Emma's take.
06:44It's on her, and I'm trying everything in my body to stop, and I just couldn't.
06:47I had to give into it, and that's what it's like.
06:49And I just apologize, because I've never experienced anything like that before.
06:54That's with all comedians.
06:55I'm like, how did they get away with that?
06:56They have so much fun.
06:58And I think the crew does, too.
06:59I mean, I never had, I never got to be a part of something like that, you know?
07:05It's a phenomenon.
07:06This game has been loved by millions and millions of kids all over the world for years now.
07:12And I think this movie is a big deal for a lot of people, because now it's generational.
07:19There's kids that have grown up and are out in the world working and living and have families of their own.
07:26It's just been that long that the game has been part of our world.
07:30So it'll be cool to finally, like, bring that universe in a cinemas.
07:36The whole production design is brilliant.
07:39And when you see some of these sets and these props, you're going to be blown away at how faithful and how beautiful this world has become using all of the elements of the video game, Minecraft.
07:52Grant Major, legendary production designer.
07:56I know him from a long time ago, about 20 years ago.
07:59We worked together on King Kong.
08:02So dude's a legend, brilliant.
08:05And he's bringing all of his mustard sauce on this one.
08:08It was like, how do we translate this 16-bit quality of the game into a live-action film?
08:15Like, how do we realize those designs as still cubed characters, but that have flesh and hair and bits and feel like sentient beings?
08:24And so we spent a lot of time with really amazing artists at Weta, a concept artist, where we were kind of trying to crack, like, gosh, how do we bring, like, the piglins to life?
08:34And we finally kind of landed on this thing where it's like we really wanted to protect the cubic silhouette of everything for the film, but bring an organic, lived-in quality to it that it felt like a real being.
08:48Instead of just, like, a direct 16-bit kind of like you're in a video game.
08:53It's like we're treating the overworld as another dimension, a whole other world that's defined by the cubic quality of it, but has real, you know, tangible things in it.
09:05Jared's great.
09:06Jared's really fun.
09:07Jared makes sure that you're having fun.
09:11And I remember, like, one of the first conversations I had with him was he was like, I don't want this to feel like work.
09:16I want this to be fun.
09:18I don't want you to be stressed coming to work.
09:20I don't want it to be something you're dreading.
09:22I want you to want to come into work every day.
09:25And he's really made it that sort of environment.
09:27Just fun, easygoing, nothing stressful, nothing's—there's no pressure to do anything.
09:33It's just having a good time.
09:36And he's a really funny dude, and, yeah, he's been awesome to work with.
09:40It is really hard keeping a straight face during this process.
09:44We laugh and giggle and try to be serious all the time.
09:48The other day, me and Emma could not stop laughing because I had to keep saying, and we got to find a boat.
09:55We got to find a boat.
09:57And just the way I said it, we kept breaking characters so much.
10:00It's been so much fun.
10:01I really enjoy working with everybody.
10:04Jack is my homie.
10:06I think the world of him, I think he just commits 150% to everything that he does.
10:12And it's so much fun to learn from him, whether he knows it or not.
10:16I'm always watching him and observing him and just watching his genius.
10:22And so any moment I'm, like, asking Jerry, can I just have a little more time with him?
10:27I wish that we could have spent more time working together because he's just a dream.
10:31And Jason has been a lot of fun, too.
10:33Like, I think a lot of people don't get to see him in funnier roles.
10:39And so to get to watch him, you know, do his ba-dum-tsch moments, have his little funny bits has been really fun to watch.
10:48He's such a gentle giant.
10:51Dude, this is it.
10:52We finally unveiled the masterpiece.
10:55I'm excited.
10:55I've been waiting for people to see this for a long time.
10:58Finally here.
10:58I think it's just a beautiful adventure.
11:00It's really a dream come true.
11:01We're at the world premiere, babe.
11:03Being in London is amazing.
11:06It is a masterpiece.
11:07I love Jason Momoa.
11:08I love Jack Black and Danielle and Emma and Sebastian.
11:11And we had a very, very good time.
11:13I'm so happy to be here.
11:14It's insane.
11:15I've never done a premiere in London before, so that's a first.
11:18It has a lot of Easter eggs.
11:19It has a lot of little things that I always send you would see.
11:22I love kicking ass on all the zombies.
11:25It's just a hilarious journey.
11:27It was so much fun bringing out my inner kid and just getting to laugh.
11:30It's something that's going to make you feel good and go on an adventure.
11:33We're going to make you giggle.
11:34To be able to bring it and share it with the world now is just amazing.
11:38There might be a few people you recognize.
11:40It just makes you want to wear bright colors.
11:42Heartful.
11:42And a little bit ridiculous.
11:44A lot of love and care went into this thing.
11:46It's just going to be a fun movie.
11:48You've got to go watch it.
11:49You've got to go watch it.
12:05You've got to go watch it.
12:07You've got to go watch it.
12:07It's just going to be a fun movie.
