00:00I am Joe Swash, and I believe in some sort of afterlife.
00:18In my head, what I think a ghost is, I suppose I think they're like dead people,
00:22like the spirits of dead people that are just waiting,
00:25or they've got some unfinished business they need to pass on a message,
00:28or they're stuck, God don't know whether to stick them into hell or heaven.
00:34I'm terrified of coming face to face with a paranormal,
00:38but then I don't think I can 100% believe in ghosts or spirits if I haven't seen one.
00:45So, I went on a journey to try and find some hard evidence that ghosts are real.
00:50So I'm going to be stuck in a room with a sex demon? Great.
00:53Now we don't know whether there is a chance to be stuck up there.
00:56Oh, stop it.
00:58I spent the night in some seriously spooky places.
01:02This is a little bit of what it's been ever done.
01:05I met people who are convinced that the dead never go away.
01:10He just says to tell you that he loves your little boy.
01:14You've worn outside the door already.
01:17Others told me I was on a wild goose chase.
01:20I wouldn't say that there are stranded souls roaming the world.
01:27Do you believe in ghosts?
01:28I've come across so many cases of people faking it.
01:32But then, something happened that I can't explain.
01:36Very nice cups, Nan.
01:49Mmm.
01:51Only the best child I've ever heard.
01:53Now, without that, how?
01:54The first kind of memories of me listening to ghost stories and hearing ghost stories are from me nan.
02:00Oh, there you go, Joe.
02:01Right, it's a nan.
02:03She's from Ireland and she's from a Catholic family.
02:06My nan will tell me ghost stories and I get all ghost pimples and I think, oh, my God, I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight.
02:15I was here in Setford in my own house and I got up in the night to go to the bathroom.
02:21My father, who died when I was in my 40s, was standing at the bottom of the stairs and he said, I've come to let you know that there is something else and you've not got to be afraid.
02:36And I called him, but he was gone.
02:39My dad died when I was 12.
02:41Yeah.
02:41So I've had dreams, very vivid dreams where my dad's come back and I've had conversations with him and I've woken up.
02:48And it's taken a couple of days to get my head around the dream.
02:52You don't think a part of you was dreaming that.
02:55You might wake up in the morning and think, I did dream this, but I do think that there are really genuine people out there that can actually communicate.
03:09Nan hasn't just seen ghosts.
03:11She even likes to have the occasional chinwag with them.
03:17That's a nice bell, isn't it?
03:18Hello.
03:20Hello.
03:21Hi, Tracy.
03:22I'm Tracy.
03:22I'm Jo.
03:30There's a gentleman coming through.
03:35Oh, that's your husband.
03:37He's coming in.
03:39Tell him not to bring his cigarette.
03:40Just as he's talking.
03:42There's a man coming in and he's saying father.
03:48And he keeps wanting to get something from the bedroom.
03:51I'm going to like a pot of ashes and like it would have been something you would have said goodnight to.
03:59He's very nervous a little bit about this because he says to me that he wouldn't have been the biggest believer, you know, before he passed over.
04:08Yeah.
04:09And he didn't have his chance to say goodbye, you know, and that is one of the saddest things.
04:16It was quick.
04:17I'm going to my heart, you know.
04:19Well, your dad, why am I seeing the black taxi now?
04:25Um, I know you're getting taxes, but he's particularly wanting to show me this.
04:30He just says to tell you that he loves your little boy.
04:35Yeah, he just told me to tell you that.
04:37He said, tell him that he's absolutely lovely.
04:42And he just said to me, don't go there.
04:46Don't go there.
04:47Like, the things are not easy around him, OK, but I know that he's very, he says he's lovely.
05:00He's going to be full of her, I can tell you.
05:02I don't know if he is now, but it looks as if he's going to be full of her.
05:06Very happy.
05:07He keeps saying to me to tell you not to worry about things.
05:14Well, how did you think that went?
05:15Uh, yeah, it went really well.
05:18I mean...
05:19Yeah.
05:19Did you get anything from it?
05:21Yeah, definitely, definitely.
05:23I mean, she said a few things that were very, very peculiar.
05:27And the stuff about, about the taxi, because, because obviously, dad was a taxi driver, weren't he?
05:33Yeah.
05:33It's a little bit emotional, because you feel like, if it is true, it's the first, this is the first kind of connection I've had with him since he died, kind of thing.
05:43Right, yeah.
05:43When I was 12, so that bit got kind of, I got kind of wept up in, when she said he was standing behind me and stuff like that.
05:50That was very, very strange, wasn't it?
05:52Yeah, well, I believe that. And I think that he probably was standing there behind you, you know? Because I think that they don't never go away, really. They look after you for quite a long time.
06:04Yeah.
06:04Yeah. And he, he was probably standing there.
06:08Nan's had a strong influence on my life and so is my family's religion.
06:12The Catholic Church teaches you that the spirit lives on after death. But what I want to know is, what that will make of my ghost hunting mission.
06:23Dear God, sorry to just move, but I feel that I should be suddenly here.
06:30What would be your definition of a ghost?
06:32As a Catholic, I would say, we do believe that there are spiritual forces, spiritual beings at work in the world and their, their influence is in the world.
06:44But I wouldn't say at all that we would have this belief, which some people think, that there are stranded souls roaming the world.
06:53So, if that's what people mean by ghosts, I would say, we don't, as Catholics, believe in that.
06:59I've met people who believe that they can speak to spirits. Who do you think that they might be communicating with?
07:05When it comes to, to calling on the dead or the unknown, we should, we should avoid this at all costs, because we're never quite sure what we're opening ourselves up to.
07:14And there's a great risk that we can open ourselves up, even to our own delusions.
07:19Yeah.
07:19Or to very harmful, evil spiritual forces.
07:22We talk about demons and devils, but these are, these are spiritual creatures that have turned to evil.
07:29So, I'd say to anyone, especially to a Christian, turn to God, and not to be going into dangerous, unknown territory of opening our hearts to malevolent forces.
07:45So, are ghosts really the devil in the skies?
07:52Not all Christian churches think so.
07:55Not all Christian churches think so.
07:56He has worked with us before, and I know that you've all thoroughly enjoyed his demons.
08:00He has worked with us before, and I know that you've all thoroughly enjoyed his demons.
08:01He's a mere 17 years old.
08:30So, let's give a nice, warm welcome to Mr. Ross Barcliffe.
08:34Can I come to the lady just in the back in white stripes there?
08:48Thank you, my love.
08:49I'm very conscious of having a lady coming forward to talk to yourself in the spirit world there.
08:53And I know as she comes across there, Timmy, she very much highlights the fact for me, I feel that she would have passed with a cancerous condition,
08:59and I do believe it would have originated just about the stomach and esophagus area with the lady in concern.
09:04All right?
09:04She would have been a very, well, she comes across as being a very motherly connection and a motherly figure towards yourself, my love,
09:13and I feel that's what I want to call her and place her in with yourself.
09:15Does that make sense?
09:16Yes.
09:16Towards the end there, it was as if we lost that whole character that mum was, all right?
09:24Which was a very outgoing, a very bubbly, and a very lively individual.
09:28Does that make sense?
09:29Because it's as if she went in herself so much, my love, there.
09:32We're just left with a very quiet, almost shadow of a former self, I have to say, okay?
09:36And I think I'll leave you there.
09:38God bless.
09:38God bless.
10:08God bless.
10:38God bless.
10:40God bless.
10:57God bless.
10:57has imprints of energy all around it.
10:59Is that memories?
11:00Yeah, exactly.
11:00That's why the classic ghost is a lady or a man
11:04going about their daily routine.
11:05It's like an echo left in the building,
11:07and every now and then that echo sort of gets played out again.
11:10We've got to be in the right place at the right time
11:13to really get in deep contact with a ghost.
11:22I find it hard to relate to seeing him on stage in a suit,
11:25thinking he's in a suit, or he's a little bit geeky, you know.
11:28I couldn't relate to him on stage,
11:30but then speaking to him one-to-one when he was in his own clothes,
11:33I thought, you know what, you are a normal fella,
11:35you are a normal boy, you're not just a nutter.
11:38What Ross was saying is that to see a ghost is a bit like potluck.
11:41You've got to be at the right place at the right time to see a ghost.
11:45I see demons and spires with Cyclops eyes
11:49at night while I'm sleeping.
11:53I'm about to spend the night in a seriously haunted house.
12:05The family who live here are so hacked off with her anti-social ghosts
12:09that I've had to call in a medium.
12:12What sort of stuff was going on?
12:17After about the first couple of months we moved in,
12:19we started hearing things.
12:21We used to have a piano, which was at the side of the Swarnold Victorian piano.
12:24Yeah.
12:25And one morning, my wife woke us up and said, can you hear this?
12:28And you could hear the piano keys playing.
12:34I thought it was one of the boys that had come down early,
12:38so I get out of bed, went in to see, like,
12:41Neil and Christopher's room, and they're both fast asleep.
12:43I thought there was a car parked outside with a CD player playing.
12:49Yeah.
12:50I just said, oh, it'll be a car.
12:51You thought of an archaeological explanation?
12:53Yeah.
12:54Well, was you scared?
12:55Was you not scared?
12:56I was terrified.
12:57Yeah.
12:58Yeah.
12:59Yeah.
13:00We had ticking.
13:01It went on for absolutely months at a time.
13:03What?
13:04Just like, like ticking?
13:05Like ticking in our ears all night.
13:10In the end, we got to a point where I got out of bed three in the morning
13:14and tore the bedroom apart.
13:15Just trying to find something.
13:16Trying to find something, an explanation.
13:21Ralph said one of the previous owners of the house, he collected clocks.
13:26The love of his life was his gritty big grandfather clock,
13:29what he loved, and he wants you to appreciate it.
13:35Absolutely bizarre.
13:36And what else did you feel when you came to this house?
13:39Well, I mean, there's quite a lot of things,
13:41because I did mention to them as well that I've got a feeling
13:45that there's other energies going on.
13:46And I talked about this lady.
13:47There was a lady.
13:52It was about nine o'clock one evening,
13:53and I just saw the corner of my eye,
13:55and as I looked out to the passage,
13:57it's in this lady with a pink dress on.
14:02First thing, you think,
14:04wow, there's someone in the house.
14:05Because you're looking, what's she doing here?
14:07Yeah.
14:07Where's she come from?
14:12And I, you know, ran out the back into the passage,
14:14and she disappears into the, into the bathroom.
14:19So I went to the bathroom.
14:20She was gone.
14:20Nothing there.
14:33The most haunted room in the house is 17-year-old Karen's bedroom.
14:37So guess where I'm sleeping tonight.
14:39I'm just going to ask you to make a noise,
14:51be it a small noise or just a noise within the room.
14:54Just let us know you're in here.
15:03I can hear them.
15:04Do you hear the clicker?
15:05I can hear someone's on the,
15:07er, someone's at the door there.
15:08You can hear, like, someone's actually standing there and...
15:10They're just going up there.
15:11Yeah, they're just there.
15:13They're literally, this is their patrol area.
15:15This is where they'll be.
15:16Okay.
15:17It's friendly.
15:18Do you know who they are?
15:19Can you see?
15:19Yeah, I know exactly who stood out there.
15:21Which one is that?
15:22It's a male that stood outside there.
15:23Oh.
15:25Every time you're talking, he's connecting to you.
15:28He's here because of your curiosity.
15:30It's somebody that you've brought.
15:32He's going to flash the lights.
15:36You're going to be in here and the lights will dip and come on very quick.
15:39On my own.
15:46You heard him knocking.
15:50So that's the kind of thing you're going to get.
15:51Okay.
15:52Look who goes this.
15:54Well, I look forward to him.
15:57Can we turn which dough off?
15:58Because that's going to scare the living daylights out of me.
16:01This one?
16:01Yeah.
16:02So you want it half far away?
16:03Yeah.
16:09So you're happy with the others?
16:14Well, I'm not.
16:14Yeah.
16:14They can stay there.
16:15This one's the one that I'm...
16:16Should we still want to turn them around?
16:18No, because if I turn them around, they'll wake up and they're facing me again.
16:20I'm going to be terrified.
16:26Well, hopefully, I'm going to experience some sort of boastly activities.
16:30Hopefully not too scary of a visit tonight.
16:37Just like a little warm-up, you know?
16:39I wouldn't mind a little blow on the year or a little change in temperature.
16:45I don't fancy seeing the pink light.
16:47Oh, my God.
16:48It's a pink room, innit?
16:49So far, so good.
16:56Apart from them freaky dolls.
16:59On the shelf, look like they're staring at me.
17:03Apart from that, no flickering lights.
17:09So, everything's A-OK.
17:12So far, so good.
17:15Might get a good night's sleep after all.
17:19Oh, my God.
17:37Hey.
17:38Unfortunately, no activity last night.
17:42If I was going to see a ghost, I'd wanted to have seen it here.
17:45I feel quite safe here, you know?
17:49Good morning, everybody.
17:50Morning.
17:51Good morning.
17:51Good morning.
17:52How are you?
17:53Feel anything, though?
17:55I don't think I would have felt it anyway, because I was...
17:57You were out of it.
17:58Yeah.
17:58I was so comfortable and so tired.
18:01But, no, there was an odd couple of noises that I couldn't explain, but...
18:07They never worried me.
18:08They're more curious about you, I think.
18:10You're a stranger in the place.
18:12It does go to show that you don't have to be scared of ghosts all the time.
18:16Yeah.
18:16If they're in the right environment, you know?
18:19So I wasn't worried at all last night.
18:20I'm going to get the one.
18:21It was a little good thing, you know?
18:22At least you know now that ghosts can live with families.
18:26See you later.
18:27Give me five.
18:28On the side.
18:29Up above.
18:29Down below.
18:30Too slow.
18:31Kevin.
18:32Thanks for digging in the bed.
18:33Sorry.
18:34One of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in.
18:37Nice to meet you, mate.
18:37It's egg on you.
18:39Bye.
18:50Even after hearing all that's been going on in the house,
18:53it just didn't feel that spooky.
18:56After all, when you imagine a haunted place,
18:58you don't normally think of a cosy pink bedroom.
19:01Maybe the bit of me that don't believe in ghosts is saying
19:09there's got to be a reason why there's always ghosts in dark, scary, graveyard-y kind of places.
19:16They're the places that could make the mind race.
19:25I've heard that there are certain conditions in the atmosphere
19:27that can make us feel like we've seen a ghost.
19:31I'm on my way to meet a parapsychologist
19:33who's carrying out some experiments on something called infrasound.
19:43We're all familiar with the fact that dogs can hear sounds that we can't.
19:46Yeah, that's dog whistles.
19:48Exactly.
19:48That's very high frequency.
19:50We're looking at the low end, below what we can hear.
19:54Okay.
19:55And there's an awful lot of energy there.
19:57It's a very powerful sort of sound that can travel thousands
20:01of kilometres in some cases.
20:02Yeah.
20:03What we're looking for specifically is a range of frequencies between around 18 and 20 hertz.
20:08Yeah.
20:08Because research has suggested that these frequencies might be more likely to cause
20:14the paranormal-like experiences in some people.
20:17We know from research that was first done, for example, by NASA in the 1950s and 60s,
20:22they were particularly interested in studying how the vibration of rocket launches could affect
20:26the crew's ability to see and operate the equipment.
20:29Yeah.
20:29And they discovered that the crews, the people being subjected to this sound, were reporting
20:36feelings of nausea and anxiety and feeling that somebody was around them.
20:41And these are reports that are very similar to people who are in haunted buildings.
20:46If you're in a haunted castle and you feel a little bit unwell, a little bit unusual,
20:53you feel that there's something around you, you feel anxious, you're more likely to say,
20:58that's down to spirits or that's down to a ghost being there.
21:01Because you're not going to think it's down to sand, are you?
21:03You can't hear it with the sand, but you can feel it.
21:09You are aware of something that happened then.
21:11Yeah.
21:11Now, because we're generating this huge amount of energy,
21:15we're also causing things within the room to start vibrating, the windows, the doors.
21:20So are things vibrating now just without us seeing?
21:23Very, very subtly.
21:24If you take a stroll around in here and in the corridor, you'll feel how the sound,
21:30all the feelings change as you go through the building.
21:37The noises I'm hearing are actually the castle walls vibrating.
21:41Is this puddle vibrating?
21:43Yeah.
21:44Is that because of the infoset?
21:45It will be, yes.
21:50It changes, doesn't it? It gets louder and quieter.
21:54Even in a space like this, it's rather like the water on the surface of a bath.
22:00It's a complete chaotic ripple of sound as it hits all the different walls.
22:06To put his theory to the test, Steve's taking me to a part of the castle that's supposedly haunted
22:11by the ghost of two children.
22:14Right, so we have a look from the meter and see if there's anything
22:19peculiar happening in this room.
22:22These two spikes are right in the sort of range that we would be looking at.
22:25That's what we're looking for, yeah.
22:27So maybe, as the wind blows, as the noise changes, the infrasound is rising and falling,
22:33and it might just cause people to have an experience, and then five minutes
22:38later, go on again, go on again.
22:42Last night I heard someone walking through my bedroom door
22:48I haven't had no hard evidence to really believe in it and really convince myself that ghosts exist.
22:58I've only had second hand off of people that have experienced it themselves.
23:02I can only have 100% faith in myself, and if I see it, I know I'm not lying to myself,
23:08and then I can fully believe it.
23:09I'm on my way to the Ancient Ram's Inn in Gloucestershire, the most haunted house in the UK,
23:19and unlike the harmless ghosts I heard about up north, the ones down here have been known to be a
23:24little bit naughty.
23:31Is this here?
23:34Ghost hunters from around the world queue up to spend the night here.
23:41But the last lot of visitors done a runner before dawn.
23:54Nice to see you.
24:01I'm Joe, and we're going to be spending our night here.
24:04They do say it's the most haunted in Britain.
24:09An incubus appears in there.
24:11What?
24:11An incubus.
24:12What's that?
24:13Have you not heard of an incubus?
24:15Well, it's supposed to be a sex demon.
24:16So I'm going to be stuck in a room with a sex demon?
24:19Great.
24:20Now, when you go in there, don't you dare ignore them.
24:23Say hello.
24:25Ignore it to their person.
24:26Say hello to them, yeah?
24:27Hmm.
24:28Have any of them got names?
24:30Huh?
24:30Have any of them got names?
24:33Oh, to them, yes.
24:34Just hello to hello everyone.
24:36Shall I say hello everyone?
24:37Yeah.
24:37You say it first, and I'll copy what you say.
24:40I'll say it for both of us, shall I?
24:42No, I'll say it, just make me safe.
24:44Okay.
24:45I'll follow your lead, you say it first.
24:47All right.
24:48All right.
24:52Hello?
24:52John's owned the inn for over 40 years, but there's parts of his house that even he's
25:02too scared to stay in.
25:04And have a guess what the Bishop of Worcester says about the run.
25:07It is the most evil place I have ever had the misfortune to visit in 2003.
25:20Whatever.
25:22Why do yous like Stan?
25:23Is he?
25:24In the same room?
25:25Maybe.
25:29Whereabouts do you sleep in here?
25:31In the next room.
25:32I sleep here, and would you believe, twice over the last six weeks, the incubus has woke
25:45me up in the night wanting sex with me.
25:48There next to me is my Bible.
25:51I grab the Bible, I say, Lord, it's here again, get rid of it, and it goes immediately.
25:57Well, how do you know he wants to have sex with you?
25:58Oh, don't you know if somebody wants to have sex with you in bed?
26:01So what does it do when he wants to have sex with you?
26:05Does it say, like, I give you a little nudge?
26:07How do you know it's the sex thing that he wants?
26:11Because he wants to have sex with you.
26:14He wants to fuck you.
26:18He thinks it's funny.
26:21He wants to fuck you.
26:26What's that?
26:27They used the soil here for burying children.
26:33The bones of three children came up, which the police took away.
26:38They reckon that this barn roof was used for hanging people.
26:42Oh, wow.
26:46This is where the ghost appears on the stairs.
26:48I've seen people going down the stairs, picked up, and flown right back up again.
26:55Now, here's the entrance to the haunted bishop's room.
26:58I've got to perform a ceremony here for you.
27:01Is there anyone here?
27:15Ghost hunters claim, not me, this has got to be the most haunted room in Britain.
27:23In the corner over there is the ghost of a cavalier.
27:27That is where the blue lady ghost has appeared ten times over the last six months.
27:39Here in the middle bed, this is where the incubus has appeared.
27:43This is the sex daemon.
27:45Yeah.
27:45So, I've got to sleep in there.
27:48Yeah.
27:49Right.
27:49And the best of British.
27:51Thank you very much, sir.
27:54Thank you very much.
27:55You're an idiot.
28:11Got a camera over there.
28:13That's her night vision.
28:14I'm feeling quite vulnerable.
28:19That's all.
28:21I just want to sleep and wake up and go home.
28:24I can't believe I've got to do this.
28:27This is ridiculous.
28:30This is horrible.
28:31I don't know what to expect from this incubus.
28:37Is he going to touch me?
28:42I see a ghost here.
28:43It's going to, I'm going to jump out of that window.
28:50Thanks.
29:04Oh.
29:09Oh.
29:17Oh.
29:18I feel glad to be leaving this room, it's horrible, I didn't see no ghosts but it's
29:47still, it's not a pleasant room to sleep in, let's get out of here, I might not have seen
30:01a spook but I did hear lots of noises that freaked me out, but in the dead of night was
30:08it just my brain playing tricks on me?
30:17Apparently, six million of us have had paranormal experiences, so I want to find out whether
30:29this whole ghost business is real or just in the mind.
30:32That's a nice brain.
30:35Yes.
30:36It's the one I prepared earlier.
30:39Lovely.
30:40Are some people's brains more tuned in to seeing ghosts than others?
30:44Well, the right hemisphere is associated with creativity and seeing connections and there's
30:50some evidence that when people are particularly active in the right hemisphere, then they may
30:56read meaning into things that are actually perhaps just chance coincidence or random shapes
31:01and patterns.
31:02So if you're in a spooky location and you see some shadows moving and if you have a very
31:07active right hemisphere, it's like, oh, I just saw a ghost or I just saw a person, and
31:12someone who's not so active in the right might just say, oh, I just saw some shadows.
31:16What would you say I'm ruled by, the left side or the right side of my brain?
31:21We can show you some pictures that have had noise added to them, so basically you can't
31:25really see what's going on and just see how quickly you identify what's in the picture.
31:30I'd love to have a go.
31:31Shall we do that?
31:32Yeah, let's have a go.
31:33Okay, so I'll look here.
31:37Any ideas?
31:41I see like an upside down person, but I see the legs here and the arm and the head.
31:47Now, what I'm going to do now is reduce a bit of the noise.
31:51What do you think that is?
31:52That's like a little, that's like a goat, not a goat, that's like a...
31:56So it's interesting that you saw a person, when it was like that, you saw it as a person.
32:00Yeah.
32:01And that is, now you can recognise what it is.
32:05It looks totally different.
32:08This has been done in a study, and what they found was that people who believed in the paranormal
32:13made guesses much more quickly than sceptics, so the disbelievers would wait for longer.
32:19So my guess would be that you are a more right brain, active person, you'd be good at seeing connections,
32:24coming up with good ideas.
32:25Yeah.
32:26And that you would be more likely to have a ghostly experience.
32:29Wow, so you think I'm prone to seeing a ghost?
32:32Yeah, I think so.
32:33Some people's brains might be hot-wired to misinterpret something fleeting in the shadows.
32:46But I don't understand how that explains something like this.
32:54Surely there's a huge difference between seeing a ghost in your village and being possessed by a demon.
33:01Well, I've heard this story. It's one of the scariest ghost stories that I've heard of.
33:09The Hodgians were just a normal family until strange things started happening in their house.
33:15There was a knocking on the wall. There was a knocking in the bedroom.
33:25I passed into the next bedroom, and this knocking followed me, hoping to get a little bit frightened.
33:30Just couldn't make out what it was.
33:34We sat together and we heard it. And I counted down the knocks, and there was 14 altogether.
33:39We'd had various things thrown across the room, slippers and that from one side of the room, and some soft toys.
33:49We were just certainly looking at one another. We didn't know what to do. We were so scared.
33:53At one stage, there were 11 of us in the room, and as these things were flying around, marbles, pieces of Lego brick, children's building brick, they were travelling at such speed.
34:09One of them hit me on the head. I mean, I felt it. If someone had thrown it, they would have had to really put a lot into it.
34:18All of a sudden, this chair came up off the ground, and it shut down between the two beds in a straight line.
34:28And it hit the wall on the other side, and it bent the legs of the chair.
34:31I felt myself afterwards, if this had hit me, what it would have done?
34:37It came off the floor, or nearly a half inch, I should say, and I saw it slide off to the right, about three and a half to four feet, before it came to rest.
34:46The family called in a guy called Morris, a paranormal investigator.
34:55He stayed for weeks and took thousands of readings, before delivering the bad news.
35:02They had a poltergeist.
35:04It seems that the poltergeist was fixated with the younger daughter, just like the family in Hartypool.
35:13It's a different sort of ghost, but there's a lot of activity in the younger daughter's bedroom, you know?
35:18I've got on tape some episodes where she's being dragged out of the room, and you can hear her panting and holding back and saying,
35:27it's pulling me, it's pulling me, as she's being dragged out of the room as well.
35:30How the hell did she get through there?
35:39How the hell did she get through there?
35:40How the hell did she get through there?
35:48She's gone from that to that, in the sixth of a second.
35:51But just when they thought things couldn't get any worse, the poltergeist started to speak through 12-year-old Janet.
36:01If I was going to do that voice, it would probably make you cough a little bit, you know?
36:15The poltergeist said there was only one way to get rid of him.
36:19What man do you got?
36:22He told them he was a spirit of a man called Bill, who once lived in the house.
36:26I fell asleep, and I died in a chair in a corner downstairs.
36:39Records revealed this was true.
36:44From looking at it, it's very realistic, and everyone seems generally petrified of what's going on.
36:50It's just, you can't help out that little niggly thing in the back of your mind,
36:55thinking there was a film three years before.
36:59It was massive, you know.
37:09The exorcist told the story of a young girl possessed by a demon who spoke for her.
37:15It's been voted as one of the scariest films ever.
37:28And when it was released, it caused hysteria around the world.
37:32Nobody believed it.
37:34And nothing could stop it.
37:36Stop it.
37:46While it's hard to imagine that there isn't a link between the exorcist and the end of the story,
37:52I don't want to think that the family were just pulling a fast one.
37:54But I'm on my way to meet a professor who says he's heard all this before.
37:59So do you not think in the bottom of your stomach that if you started off and it's early, back in the day,
38:17are you 100% sure in your heart that there's no ghosts?
38:20I'm 100% sure.
38:22Yeah.
38:23Because I've come across so many cases of people faking it.
38:26Behind most poltergeist phenomena there's adolescent girls.
38:29Yeah.
38:30Age 12 to 15.
38:31And is it girls, just generally girls?
38:33Most, not always, but it seems to be mostly.
38:35And you get that back through the centuries.
38:36Right.
38:37Until the 19th century, the same phenomenon of furniture moving,
38:42stones being thrown, people talking in strange voices.
38:44Yeah.
38:45Was actually blamed on witchcraft.
38:47You find the same evidence for witches controlling stone throwing.
38:50Right back to ancient Greece, there's only when witchcraft becomes less of a belief
38:54that new explanations are found in terms of them being spirits and spirits of the dead.
38:58But lots of servant girls were caught and prosecuted for mimicking poltergeists in the early 19th century.
39:06The reason why it survived so long is because they're getting those stories of how to do it
39:09and those behaviors.
39:10Passing down.
39:11Century after century.
39:12It's passing down through sort of oral, you know, mouth to mouth.
39:17And also in literature as well.
39:20When more and more people are literate and more important people can read,
39:24ghosts become an important part of popular literature.
39:27There are also, you know, newspapers.
39:29Newspapers have been going, you know, regular newspapers have been going around for 250 years.
39:33And right from early on, you know, reporting ghosts.
39:35Yeah.
39:36Was something which they knew would attract a readership as well.
39:40It shows you the way in which the information we receive,
39:44whether it's from film or books, through education, shapes how we see ghosts at any given period.
39:50Owen was very practical, you know, you see the sensible side to everything.
40:06And I can understand him not being a believer and being someone that doesn't believe in ghosts and that.
40:10But I'm not a practical person. I don't break everything down.
40:16So there's still a huge part of me that still thinks there's got to be something out there.
40:21There's got to be something.
40:23There's got to be something more to life when you die.
40:25The experts have tried their best to convince me that ghosts are just a figment of my imagination.
40:41But I keep thinking about what Roster Medium told me.
40:44The classic ghost is a lady or a man going about their daily routine.
40:50It's like an echo left in the building and every now and then that echo sort of gets played out again.
40:54I still want to see a ghost before this journey is over.
41:07So I've come back up to Edinburgh, the most haunted city in Europe.
41:13Apparently, the vaults running underneath the streets have more ghosts than the raving Hogwarts.
41:19People pay to go on tour of the haunted cellars.
41:24But the director has decided I should sleep down here.
41:28The sleeping bag.
41:30You thought you were funny, didn't you?
41:35Can you see that lady there?
41:36There's an old lady with Victorian clothing.
41:39It's got...
41:41I thought it was a ghost. It's not a ghost.
41:44Yeah.
41:46Hello, you all right?
41:47Yeah, how are you doing?
41:49Good.
41:50I'm Joe. Nice to meet you.
41:51You are a very brave man, Joe.
41:52I'm Letitia.
41:53Nice to meet Letitia.
41:55I don't think you could pay me enough to sleep in here.
41:58What?
42:03Now, I do want to explain this room for you quickly.
42:05Yeah.
42:06In the 70s, it was a student flat.
42:07Yeah.
42:08And the young men living here one day got very bored and started to throw things at his back
42:11wall when he realised it was hollow.
42:14Now, he knew he had no neighbours at all.
42:16And so, he did what any sane student does.
42:18He got his friends over with their sledgehammers and they broke down this wall.
42:22What they found behind here was Nidri Wind and the Southbridge vaults.
42:25Personally, if I found it, I'd brought it up and come back inside.
42:26Right, let's go.
42:27Come on.
42:28Yeah, come on.
42:29Are you very nervous?
42:30Because you're making me nervous.
42:31What are you talking about?
42:32No, you know when you can sense someone's nervous.
42:33Right.
42:34What?
42:35Are you okay?
42:36Yeah.
42:37You sure?
42:38I can't sleep down here on my own.
42:39Surely not.
42:40I felt things in here.
42:41Last night I felt tugging on my clothes in this walkway.
42:43Yeah.
42:44And I also felt someone blowing on my ear in a kind of very kinky sexual manner.
42:47You'd think that would make me happy, but it's as in knowing what's lurking here.
43:00A lot of people have heard footsteps within this walkway and sometimes jingling of keys.
43:06Sexual manner. You'd think that would make me happy, but it's just in knowing what's lurking here.
43:11A lot of people have heard footsteps within this walkway and sometimes jingling of keys.
43:16A lot of the pubs that you hear around here are built into the vaults,
43:19and they've also seen a similar man dressed in, like, coat and a top hat, strangly hair.
43:24Merchants would store all their wares in here.
43:26Now, when the wares were in here, the watchman would walk up and down looking over them,
43:30so we do believe the footsteps are linked to him.
43:36Now, it was quite common for an employer to buy a child to get up there and clean chimneys, chimney sweep.
43:47You could buy a child for about £1.50 for seven years' labour.
43:51Now, he'd get up there. Sometimes they'd get up there, though, and get stuck.
43:56And the employer had two options.
43:57He could spend a few pennies and get another child up there to help that child out,
44:00or he could light a fire and smoke the child to death.
44:03Now, when our boss was getting these vaults ready, he was digging around,
44:07and he put that metal plate in, and when he did it, a tiny shoe fell down from there, from a child.
44:12Now, we don't know whether there is a child still stuck up there.
44:16Oh, stop it!
44:20I have seen a figure in white in here, in the room that you're going to be sleeping in tonight.
44:24Sleeping in? You're crazy!
44:25What's going on?
44:26I've seen Danny for about an hour, and that is it.
44:30Seriously, seriously, seriously.
44:33We did have a fire in Edinburgh, where lots of people ran down here for shelter.
44:37What people hadn't realised is stone conducts heat.
44:39So a lot of them got trapped in giant ovens down here.
44:42Now, a lot of people died in that fire down here.
44:45And you can imagine getting burnt alive, not very nice.
44:48The parents actually slit the throats of a lot of their young to kill them quickly,
44:56rather than have them burn alive when they realised that that was going to be the way.
44:59Now, a few psychics have come down here, have seen hundreds of people down there.
45:05All right, listen, you've got...
45:08So this is the room I've got to sleep in?
45:12Yeah, people have experienced the most within this vault.
45:17Some people actually believe there's a poltergeist in there.
45:20The side we're putting you on is where he's most active.
45:25Oh, I can't stay in there.
45:28Look, it's got big fucking holes in the back.
45:31Where do they lead to?
45:35If I've got poltergeist and lots of chuck things,
45:38look, there's a big sledgehammer and a chisel there.
45:42I don't think they're that strong.
45:44But we have had rocks coming out of that room.
45:46On one occasion, one of the tour guides had a coin thrown at her back.
45:50See?
45:51Well, if you want to chuck the sledgehammer in there.
45:54Did you hear that?
45:56Stop here.
45:57No, seriously, it was like a...
45:58Did you hear that?
46:02You're winding me up.
46:03No, I'm serious.
46:04You get really sensitive down here and you do hear things.
46:06Just stay there one second.
46:15Oh, you're fucking kidding me.
46:18I'm not walking around out here.
46:20No, I'm standing in this room.
46:24OK.
46:24The crew have set up night vision cameras
46:41because they're going to leave me down here by myself.
46:46But just in case things go belly up,
46:48they've left me a walkie-talkie.
46:50It's terrifying down here.
46:52Especially with that woman giving me the guide of it,
46:55telling me all the ghost stories
46:56about a little shoe falling out of the fucking chimney.
47:00And I'm not very happy about it.
47:21There's a great risk
47:23that we can open ourselves up
47:24to very harmful, evil spiritual forces.
47:27You've got to be in the right place
47:30at the right time
47:31to really get in deep contact with the ghost.
47:34I've come to let you know
47:36that there is something else.
47:40My guess would be that you're more of a bright brain
47:43and that you'd be more likely
47:44to have a ghostly experience.
47:50I know the pounding noise
47:52must be one of the clubs nearby,
47:54but it's still freaking me out.
47:56I've only been in here 20 minutes.
48:07Did you hear that?
48:15I feel like I'm glad I'm glad
48:17I feel like I'm glad I'm so.
48:18This is probably the worst thing I've ever done.
48:28I'm so much more.
48:33I think I've heard footsteps outside.
48:35So what do you have been doing?
48:48I don't know.
48:48I think I've heard some of us.
48:52I don't have a way of putting on how I'm looking if I'm looking at you.
48:53What do I want?
48:54I think it's all right.
48:57I don't have anything I'm good enough.
48:58I'm feeling it.
48:58I'm feeling it.
48:59So how do you think?
48:59So how do you think?
49:00If you我'm doing all this?
49:01I'm feeling it a little.
49:01But I feel like I do.
49:04Oh, God.
49:15Surely it is on me.
49:21Hello?
49:23Hello?
49:34Oh, shit, it was.
49:47Get me out of here, man.
49:58Fair enough.
50:00This is definitely the worst place I've been to.
50:04100% without a shadow of a doubt.
50:08Every minute I stayed down here, I felt like I was...
50:11Every minute it felt like it was 10 minutes.
50:14I felt like I'd been down here three days.
50:17Out there in the hallway, I know I heard women's footsteps.
50:25I don't know how that happened. I don't know how I can explain that.
50:28It's daylight.
50:40It's daylight.
50:40But...
50:41Even the professionals wouldn't even stay in there.
50:49Who the man?
50:50I'm the man.
50:51I'm glad to be seeing the back of Edinburgh.
51:03Lovely city and that, but what's one scary place?
51:07Whether there was ghosts in there or whether it was just my brain on overtime, but there was something funny about that place last night.
51:17I mean, as far as the investigation goes into finding ghosts, we haven't found any ghosts and we haven't found any evidence that there are ghosts.
51:26But it doesn't mean to say that I believe less in ghosts.
51:33I don't believe any more in them, but last night was...
51:37That was spine chilling.
51:39I've been called to the studio where they've been editing my film.
51:59They've found something strange on the tapes from the Edinburgh Volts.
52:09Someone's talking.
52:26Did you hear that at the time?
52:28I didn't hear that when I was in...
52:30That is ridiculous.
52:33How long did that go on for?
52:37It's...
52:38It's about 15, 20 minutes.
52:42No way.
52:42What, 15, 20 minutes?
52:43That noise was coming through.
52:45Yeah, all the way through.
52:46And that's someone...
52:47That's definitely someone talking.
52:48Yeah.
52:49It sounds like it's one person.
52:50It sounds like someone's reading.
52:52Something's...
52:53It's like someone's reading a prayer.
52:57Someone suggested it sounded a bit like the last rites.
53:04That's made everything on my back and my head just all stand up.
53:07Look, look, my nipples are awkward.
53:11What explanation could there be for that?
53:13When we first found out there was a club above it, we thought, oh, that's what it is then.
53:18It'll be...
53:18The club's for me, it could be someone in the club that cleans.
53:22But it's not a cleaner's conversation.
53:23No.
53:24And we've actually got some of the sounds from the club when the club was still...
53:30Yeah, because it was on, weren't it, for a couple of hours.
53:32All right.
53:35So that's the loud...
53:36Imagine how loud that music is in the club.
53:37And I could hear that quite...
53:39You could feel that kind of...
53:41And you can hear it over the top of the music.
53:45Exactly.
53:46So it's not physically possible for that voice that we heard to be coming from the club.
53:52Because that's what we all thought, first of all, that it must be from the club.
53:54But it can't be.
53:55And it can't be a conversation with someone else because there's no...
53:58There's no gap.
53:59No.
54:00There's no gap for a player.
54:01It's just...
54:01It's just rolled off a monologue.
54:03Yeah.
54:08It's not the microphone picking up, you know, a radio signal when you're under the ground.
54:14Because as well as it being on the camera that's locked off on you, you can hear it less so on your microphone.
54:21So it can't be a camera fault.
54:24That's ridiculous.
54:27That's really, really freaky.
54:29It stops abruptly.
54:33To me, personally, I perceive it as a child.
54:42Yeah, that's what I would have thought.
54:43It is quite high-pitched.
54:44And then, I mean, the talking, which has been going for sort of 15, 20 minutes, then just stops.
54:49Every little noise I was hearing, like, if there was a pin drop, I'd have heard a pin drop.
54:55So for you to say that there was that noise hanging around me and I didn't hear it,
54:59then for me, that kind of cements it in my mind that it's got to have been...
55:03Something supernatural.
55:07If I'd heard that, I'd have been out there in a shot.
55:09It's one of those things you just can't explain, isn't it?
55:15You'll never be able to explain what that is.
55:17Because it's a right mind battle whether to stick your neck out on the light and say,
55:29yes, I believe in ghosts, or no.
55:32I can't say I don't believe in ghosts.
55:34I know that much for sure.
55:36Because of stuff that I've seen, heard, and felt.
55:39So, I'm going to put my neck on the line and say,
55:52yes, I do believe that there's something out there.
55:56Give you life of my life
56:00You've always been a thought inside
56:06But to me, you're a shining light
56:09Yes, I do believe in ghosts.
56:15Give you life of my life
56:18Give you life of my life
