Nigel Farage and his Reform UK party have given their thoughts on Port Talbot’s closure last year, and say they want to restart steelworking in the town. The First Minister says the plan is ‘nonsense’. Port Talbot and the steelworking industry in Wales will become a wider part of the Senedd elections, but how much of an impact will it have?

00:00The race to be the biggest party in the Senate at next year's elections is already well underway,
00:07and parties are doing what they can to score the necessary political points early doors to try and pull away.
00:13Official campaigning hasn't started, but clearly parties are trying to get ahead of the issue,
00:18and one poignant factor that could affect voters is poor Talbot Steelworks that partly closed last year.
00:24The Welsh Government said it was destined to close down despite efforts to negotiate with the site's owners, Tata.
00:31Reform were the latest party to weigh in, and have said that on a visit to poor Talbot,
00:35if Nigel Farage's party was elected as the biggest in the Senate next year,
00:40then he would bring back the blast furnaces to Wales, and allow mining coal to use at the site.
00:45According to the First Minister, the policy is nonsense, as it seems the ship has sailed on the future of the blast furnaces,
00:51which are unusable after they were turned off.
00:54Farage told BBC Wales that reopening it would be impossible, and would have to build new ones, costing in the low billions.
01:02UK Labour did little to help their Welsh counterparts in the argument earlier on this year,
01:07when they rushed to nationalise a similar site in Scunthorpe, which faced thousands of job losses.
01:12But Plaid Cymru's proposition of nationalising poor Talbot was laughed at by Welsh Labour counterparts.
01:19Plaid argue this shows a lack of fairness in Wales' treatment compared to England,
01:23and in such a poignant topic of steelworking, the issue could become a big factor in next year's Senate elections.
01:30At the moment, Reform, Plaid Cymru and Welsh Labour are fighting for top spot,
01:34with Plaid ahead in the most recent polls, but with almost a full calendar year to go,
01:39expect plenty of movement before then.
