Despite public calls for his return, Former Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik humbly suggests that the best person to lead Malaysia’s education reform in the next term might be none other than Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim himself.
He also reflects on Rafizi Ramli’s resignation letter, which highlighted education reform as a colossal national agenda, one that must be spearheaded with unity and clarity under the PM’s vision.

00:00If you ask me, my very personal point of view, maybe in the next term, the Prime Minister himself should take that portfolio as the Minister of Education.
00:11Number one, when it comes to teachers and educationists and the education fraternity, the other day when I was interviewed, I keep saying that I'm trying to detach them from my heart, but they refuse.
00:23They keep coming there and I'm the refrain to lift my heart and I cannot blame them. I cannot blame myself for that.
00:31I think mainly because we all believe in education as the best tool to ensure not only the development of this country, but the stability and the continuity and the, let's say, sustainability of the prosperity of the country that we enjoy nowadays.
00:51And we trust that Malaysia deserves much better than what we had today.
00:56The only conduit for it is education.
00:59And number two, talking about that, it just reminds me of Rafizi's note, his lengthy, a long letter that he wrote upon his resignation.
01:14He said that RM13 will mainly focusing on education reform is going to be a massive, colossal thing for the country.
01:27And I think it's not only what Rafizi had in his mind, but also the vision of the Prime Minister that he shared with Rafizi.
01:38Because when they talk about RM13, be it 13 or 12 or whatever it will continue, it's a collective effort by all ministries and guided by the vision of the Prime Minister.
01:54It's going to be a massive thing.
01:57If we look at the condition of the education at the moment, I'm not sure whether the ministry can handle that big thing.
02:09It requires a dedicated leadership, a firm, and those who know what the Prime Minister wants and what they wanted it to be.
02:20And it requires a holistic way in looking into education, not only at the foundational level, but also at the tertiary level.
02:30If you ask me, my very personal point of view, maybe in the next term, the Prime Minister himself should take that portfolio as the Minister of Education.
02:41Because we can see the performance of our economy, the performance of our, let we say, financial stability is on the right track.
02:51And the best person to lead the educational reform is the Prime Minister himself.
02:56And the best person to lead the educational reform is the first person to lead the educational reform.
