Chinese national gets five years' jail for causing death of Sabah State Courts director

A Chinese national has been sentenced to five years' jail by the Sibu Sessions Court on Tuesday (June 10) for causing the death of Sabah State Courts director Marutin Pagan, 56, in an accident.  Sessions Court judge Rosli Ahmad ordered  42-year-old Sun Xue Song, to serve the prison term from March 30, the date of his arrest. 00:10Court's director Marutin Pagan in an accident in March. Sessions Court Judge Rosli Ahmad ordered

00:16on Tuesday that 42-year-old Sun Shui Song was to serve the prison term from March 30th,

00:22the date of his arrest. Sun was also fined 20,000 ringgit and disqualified from holding

00:28a driving license for five years from April 7th, the date he was charged. According to the facts of

00:34the case, Sun was accused of driving a sports utility vehicle dangerously, causing Marutin's

00:41death at the Kanawit Roundabout near Cebu on March 30th. During mitigation, Sun's counsel Terence

00:49Tiong said his client was a first-time offender with no previous convictions in Malaysia or his

00:55home country. Tiong added his client had surrendered to the authorities and cooperated fully during the

01:01investigation. He contended that a long custodial sentence would also hurt Sun's innocent dependents,

01:09including his mother, 79, and his seven-year-old son, who is still in primary school and would be

01:15left without a means of support or a caregiver. Deputy Public Prosecutor Cynthia Imelda-Jerry urged the

01:23court to impose a deterrent sentence as the accused had caused emotional trauma to the victim's family.
