00:00LGBTQ plus people and supporters gathered on Sunday at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington,
00:08D.C. to rally for preserving decades of progress while protesting setbacks under President Donald
00:13Trump. The rally was held at the site of Martin Luther King's 1963 I Have a Dream speech
00:19and capped the World Pride celebration. Ashley Smith is a World Pride organizer and president
00:25of the Capital Pride Alliance Board. This is a rally for our lives. Across this country and across
00:32the globe, LGBTQI plus people are under siege, especially our trans siblings. The World Pride
00:40parade passed within one block of the White House grounds on Saturday in one of the final events of
00:45the week's long experience. We're just showing how many of us there are, our attitude, our courage.
00:51We're fighting back. We're not going to go away. We will not be silenced.
00:56Speakers on Sunday criticized Trump for issuing executive orders limiting transgender rights,
01:01banning transgender people from serving in the armed forces, and rescinding anti-discrimination
01:06policies for LGBTQ plus people. The White House has defended its dismantling of diversity, equity,
01:11and inclusion programs, calling DEI a form of discrimination, and said its transgender policy
01:17protects women by keeping transgender women out of shared spaces.
01:21Proponents of DEI consider it crucial to correct historic inequities.
01:26Bianca Sprague, the executive director of TransPride Washington, D.C., denounced the myriad state laws
01:31around the country targeting trans Americans.
01:34These attacks are not just legislative. They are deeply personal, inflicting harm, fear,
01:41and despair upon our community.
01:44Backers of laws that ban gender-affirming health care for minors say they are attempting to protect
01:49them from starting on a path they may later regret.
01:52Washington was chosen as the site for world pride before Trump won the 2024 election.
01:56The event moves around the globe every two years.
