00:00In Virginia, the high school astronomy club gathered at night to observe the stars with
00:04their telescopes. Leo Biederman is confused because he notices something in the sky that
00:09he cannot identify, so his teacher asks him to take a photograph to send to a professional
00:14astronomer. The images arrive at an observatory in Arizona, where Dr. Wolf uses his enormous
00:19telescope to verify the information. To his surprise, he discovers a comet that will crash
00:25into Earth. He immediately tries to send this information via email, but the server isn't
00:30working. Instead, he puts the information on a floppy disk and names the comet Wolf Biederman.
00:36Then Wolf drives down the mountain while trying to call his superiors on his cell phone, but
00:40he keeps getting voicemail. At the same time, a truck comes from the opposite direction,
00:44and the driver gets distracted when he accidentally drops a cigarette on his lap. Since Wolf is
00:50also distracted with his phone, they don't see each other and their vehicles collide.
00:54Wolf's car falls off the mountain and catches fire. A year later, in Washington, D.C., news
01:00reporter Ginny begs her boss to let her become an anchor, but her boss refuses, as always.

01:23resignation of the Secretary of the Treasury. During lunch, Ginny meets with her mother,
01:29Robin, who reveals that her ex-husband, Jason, has married a new woman and that they have twins
01:34together. Later, Ginny meets with the Secretary's assistant and discovers that he resigned after
01:39speaking with the President about Ellie, whom the assistant assumes was a mistress. Ginny manages to
01:45locate the Secretary and finds him leaving with his family on a boat full of supplies.
01:49The man freezes when Ginny mentions Ellie and asks for some compassion if she publishes the story,
01:56explaining that he only resigned to be with his family. On the way back, Ginny's car is surrounded
02:01by black vehicles that ram into hers until she stops. It turns out they're the Secret Service,
02:06who drag Ginny into their own car to take her to a restaurant. Ginny is surprised to find President
02:11Beck waiting for her, and his pronunciation makes her realize that the secret is not the name Ellie,
02:16but the initials Ellie Beck explains that he will talk about the matter in two days during a press
02:21conference and asks her not to say anything until then, promising to give her the first question
02:26as a reward. When she returns to the office, Ginny searches the term Ellie on the internet and goes
02:32to a paleontology website. It turns out that Ellie means extinction level event, and it refers to the
02:38comet that killed the dinosaurs. That night, Ginny meets with her father, Jason, and his new wife.
02:43They are sad because she didn't attend their wedding and even give Ginny some elegant earrings.
02:49But Ginny can't stop thinking about the coming tragedy. After drinking a lot,
02:53she tells her father to go back to Robin and leaves. On the day of the conference,
02:57Ginny's boss is in the last row, while Ginny herself is in the second. President Beck tells
03:02them everything about the Wolf-Viterman comet, which is bigger than Mount Everest and will crash
03:07into Earth in a year. The United States has partnered with Russia to build a spaceship called
03:12Messiah, which will intercept the comet and blow it up. Beck also introduces everyone to the Messiah
03:18crew, who appear in a video conference to explain how they will land the ship on the comet to place
03:23the warheads. The president asks everyone to keep living normal lives and not to hoard, so he will
03:29freeze all wages and prices. As promised, Beck chooses Ginny first for the questions, so she takes a risk
03:36and asks three, bringing up the topic of the Secretary's resignation. Beck has no choice but to
03:41admit that human survival is at stake, but he believes there is no reason to panic because they will win
03:47this fight. Another journalist asks about the discovery, so Beck explains that the scientists who
03:52found the comet died in a car accident. At home, Leo's family hears the name and wonders if it's about
03:58them. Soon, all the neighbors will show up at their house to ask questions. A few days later, Leo appears in
04:04all the newspapers and magazines, give a lecture at his school where he shares what really happened
04:09and all the kids think he's cool now. Meanwhile, the Messiah team has a party to share a happy day
04:15with their families before dedicating themselves to training 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
04:21That night, they go to a bar and discuss the risks of the mission. Due to the comet's rotation period,
04:26the crew only has a seven-hour window to land on the comet before sunrise. They will have to work
04:31quickly because if sunlight reaches the comet, dangerous gas eruptions will occur. Two months
04:37later, the crew finally leaves Earth in a space shuttle that will take them to the station where
04:41the Messiah was built. All media outlets cover the launch and explain that Messiah was originally a
04:47project called Orion, which the Russians developed for a nuclear war. It is powered by a prototype nuclear
04:53propulsion system, which will allow the crew to reach the comet before it gets too close to Earth.
04:58The crew is successfully transferred from the shuttle to the Messiah, and now a long journey awaits them
05:04to find the comet. Five months later, journalists from around the world prepare to cover the Messiah's
05:09landing, and Jenny is surprised to learn that she will finally become a presenter, since she was the
05:14one who revealed the story. Meanwhile, the crew finally sees the comet and is amazed by its size.
05:20They begin to prepare the warheads, carefully moving them in zero gravity. On Earth, Jenny explains to
05:26viewers that the Messiah will have to fly through the comet's tail, which is full of rocks, sand,
05:31and ice. Soon, the Messiah begins flying through the tail, and the pilots do their best to avoid
05:38all potential dangers. However, there are too many rocks, and they are all huge, so the ship still takes
05:44a couple of hits. Fortunately, the damage is minimal, and the Messiah lands safely on the comet.
05:50Now the crew has six hours and 18 minutes to complete the mission. Before dawn, the astronauts go out with
05:57a special machine that immediately begins drilling. The first few hours go well, but eventually the
06:02drill gets stuck. The hole they have made so far is not deep enough for the warheads to cause real
06:08damage, so someone will have to go down and release the drill to complete the mission. With only 20 minutes
06:13left, the ship's pilots realize the crew is taking too long and will not have time to return. They
06:19decide to fly closer to rescue them, even though this means they might not have enough fuel later
06:24to return to Earth. Commander Monash goes down the hole and discovers that it opens into a cave,
06:30which caused a drill to hit the side. After pulling a lot and even jumping on it, Monash manages to free
06:36the drill and begins to climb out as quickly as possible. The pilots arrive with the ship, but they must stop
06:42flying to save fuel, so they land running behind the crew. Unfortunately, they run out of time and the
06:48sun comes out. Little by little, the light reaches the comet, so the astronauts cover their visors with
06:54solar shields. A gas eruption blasts Monash out of the hole before he can finish climbing, and he
06:59doesn't have time to cover his visor, so his face gets burned. The crew manages to catch him by the
07:04tether and reel him in before they start running toward the ship. The gas keeps shooting from the ground
07:09beneath them and unfortunately hits the doctor, who flies off into open space. The rest of the crew
07:15reaches the messiah just in time, and the ship pulls away before the temperature gets worse.
07:21Some astronauts want to rescue the doctor, but they don't have the fuel or the time to do so.
07:26Monash's face is in terrible shape, and he can't see, so now Captain Tanner is in charge. Earth receives
07:32an update on the mission. The crew place the warheads, but lost a man in the process.
07:37Jenny reads a few words to honor the doctor's memory. Once the messiah is at a safe distance,
07:43the crew detonates the warheads. The shockwave caused by the explosion reaches the ship,
07:49shaking it like crazy and interrupting its transmission to Earth. The astronauts rush
07:54to minimize the damage and stop any possible fire before it even starts, which helps the ship
07:59stabilize fairly quickly. The crew discusses what to do now, and considering the damage to the ship,
08:04they agree to return home. Moments later, President Beck receives bad news and has to share it with
08:10the country as carefully as possible. It turns out that the detonation of the warhead only managed
08:16to break the comet in half, and the resulting pieces are still large enough to cause catastrophic
08:21damage to the planet. Both pieces are heading toward Earth, and NASA has lost all contact with
08:27the messiah, so they don't know if the crew is alive. Beck announces that the government has been
08:31digging shelter caverns into the cliffs of Missouri to use them as bunkers, capable of holding one
08:37million people, along with enough animal and plant life to repopulate the Earth once it's all over.
08:43200,000 people have already been selected, including leaders, doctors, scientists, engineers,
08:49teachers, soldiers, and artists. In a month, a national lottery will choose the remaining 800,000 people.
08:56The lottery procedure details are sent to Jenny, who shares them on her show. The lottery drawing
09:01will be in August and will choose winners based on their social security numbers. However, people
09:07over 50 cannot participate unless they are among the selected scientists necessary for reconstruction.
09:13Leo's family soon receives a call informing them they are part of the pre-selected group.
09:18With only four weeks left until impact, Jenny visits Robin, who will not be part of the lottery.
09:23Jenny admits she thinks it's unfair that she was pre-selected since she's only a journalist.
09:28Meanwhile, Leo proposes to his girlfriend Sarah, so she can legally become his family and come to the
09:34bunker. Sarah doesn't want to leave her parents behind, but Leo promises to use his fame to get them in.
09:40As the days pass, people across the country panic, and looters begin setting fire to abandoned stores.
09:46The flames aren't put out because firefighters are busy preparing the shelters.
09:50The rest of the world isn't doing well either. Major cities in Latin America have been taken over
09:56by looter gangs. And in Moscow, people fight for food and fuel as the shortage continues.
10:02Two weeks before impact, Tanner runs some calculations before checking on Monash.
10:07He no longer has blisters on his face, but his eyes are still damaged. The only thing he can see
10:12occasionally are flashes of light. Tanner decides to read to him to keep him entertained.
10:17When it's time to evacuate, the National Guard allows Leo to bring his family and Sarah,
10:22but not her family. Even though Leo submitted a request, Sarah refuses to leave her loved ones
10:28and decides to stay. So she has to watch the bus take Leo away. Meanwhile, Jenny is informed that
10:34Robin has taken her own life. After retrieving her belongings from the morgue, she sits in the rain
10:39to grieve her loss. Jason comes to pick her up and reveals that his wife left him to hide with her
10:44family. Jenny tells him she feels like an orphan before leaving alone in a taxi.
10:50Five days before the impact, the chosen people and rescued animals are arriving at the bunker
10:55in Missouri's limestone cliffs. A crowd gathers behind the fence, asking to be saved too.
11:00Leo watches the desperate people who have brought their babies and hears a soldier say they'll be in
11:06the bunker for two years. Refusing to go on without Sarah, Leo says goodbye to his family and runs off
11:12to rescue his wife. At the news station, Jason brings Jenny some childhood photos and says goodbye
11:18for the last time, leaving her crying. That night, NASA launches a series of missiles known as Titans,
11:24hoping to destroy the comet, and Jenny follows its trajectory in her newscast.
11:29Fourteen hours later, Beck presents the results. The missiles have failed, so humanity must prepare
11:34for impact. The smallest fragment of the comet has been named Biederman and will impact in 12 hours
11:40near Cape Hatteras in the Atlantic Ocean. This means a tsunami will hit the U.S. East Coast and destroy
11:46major cities like New York and Philadelphia. The main body of the comet, called Wolf, will land in
11:52Western Canada several hours later, and this will be the actual extinction-level event. For two days
11:58after the impact, dust and debris will fill the sky and keep it dark for two years. Without sunlight,
12:04all plant and animal life will die. Ten hours before impact, Tanner finishes his calculations
12:10and announces he has a plan. They can't do anything about the Biederman fragment, but he believes they
12:15can stop the main Wolf comet to save humanity. Since gas eruptions have created a very large fissure
12:22reaching the comet's core, they can place the remaining warheads in that hole and blow the comet
12:26into small pieces. Messiah doesn't have much fuel left, so they can't land on the comet or leave once
12:32they're done. They'll fire the ship straight into the fissure and die in the process. It's hard to
12:37hear, but the crew agrees they have no other choice. They contact Houston and share their plan to bring
12:43hope to the people. On Earth, Leo hitchhikes to get home, but Sarah and her family have already left.
12:49He remembers that Sarah's father has a bicycle and steals it to get out of the city faster.
12:53There's a massive traffic jam blocking all the roads, but the bicycle allows Leo to move easily
12:59between the cars. He finds Sarah and her parents tell her to go with her little brother. The three
13:04young people escape on a bicycle while Sarah's parents watch them crying. At the news station,
13:10the journalists draw sticks to choose who will accompany Jenny to the bunker. However, she feels
13:15guilty because her boss has a daughter, so when the helicopter comes to pick her up, Jenny lets her
13:20boss and the girl take her place. Then, Jenny goes to the beach to find Jason, and they reconcile
13:25before agreeing to wait together for the end. At that moment, people all over the world watch as
13:31the Biederman fragment falls from the sky and touches the Atlantic Ocean. A gigantic explosion occurs,
13:37and the sky darkens as a huge tsunami forms. Soon, the wave covers New York, toppling thousands of
13:44buildings and killing all the people who couldn't escape. Jenny and Jason hug on the beach as they too
13:50are killed. The Statue of Liberty is destroyed, and its head now floats with the rest of the debris.
13:56The water even reaches the roads near the coast, so people abandon their cars and, in a panic,
14:02try to flee in search of higher ground. Sarah's parents stay behind and decide to go out with
14:07dignity. Leo, Sarah, and the baby keep running uphill, but soon they have to leave the bike and continue
14:13on foot like everyone else. Two minutes before the second impact, NASA connects the Messiah crew
14:19with their families for a final goodbye. Unfortunately, Monash's wife is trapped in
14:24traffic and couldn't arrive in time. Tanner's two sons are on active naval duty and couldn't be
14:29located either, so Tanner prays to his dead wife, telling her they will see each other soon.
14:33Just as NASA is about to end the transmission, Monash's wife arrives with their baby,
14:38and Monash also received his final goodbye. Then, the countdown begins. The crew says their last words
14:44as the Messiah enters the comet's orbit and goes through the fissure just in time. The warheads
14:50are detonated, and the comet explodes into millions of small fragments. On Earth, Leo and Sarah reach the
14:57top of the hill and watch the fragments cover the sky like fireworks. A few days later, after the waters
15:03of the Atlantic Ocean finally recede, Beck gives a speech acknowledging all the lives lost on every
15:09continent and asking people to remember those losses as they work to rebuild their future.
