00:00My heart was beating like a drum as I heard the sirens wailing.
00:03I felt the cold metal of the handcuffs on my wrists and was horrified as I was being
00:08taken away in my dad's police car.
00:10This was so not what I had imagined for my life.
00:13You must be wondering how I ended up here.
00:15Well, let me tell you my story right from the start.
00:17Hi, I'm Selma and thanks to MSA, I get to share my story with you all.
00:21So don't forget to like and subscribe.
00:23Growing up, it was just my dad and me.
00:25He worked as a private investigator and was always busy solving cases.
00:29And the fibers on his hairbrush match those left at the scene of the crime.
00:32We've got our man.
00:34Wow.
00:34Even though dad was at the top of his game, he didn't make much money.
00:38But I was content with the few luxuries I had and never asked for much,
00:41unlike other kids who wanted the latest gadgets or clothes.
00:44I was totally happy to make some sacrifices if it meant my dad got to do what he loves.
00:48He always encouraged me to follow my heart just like he did and find what I love.
00:53So as a kid, I had some unusual aspirations.
00:56I wanted to be a movie star, unicorn writer, and a ballerina all at the same time.
01:00But as I got older, I dreamt of being part of the movie magic.
01:04And because I wasn't the best actor, I decided to learn how films were made.
01:07Sometimes, I would even try and look at dad's case files to get inspiration
01:11to come up with a good movie idea.
01:13Dad had no idea.
01:15Shh.
01:15Some of my friends and I would often pretend we were making our own movies.
01:20And action.
01:21Yeah, friends, because unfortunately for me, we moved often.
01:25Every time dad got an urgent call, we had to start over.
01:28What is it this time?
01:29A burglary?
01:30Don't tell me.
01:30Shoplifting?
01:31You know I can't tell you anything until the case is solved.
01:34It's for your own safety.
01:35This went on for a while until one day, dad announced we were moving to Los Angeles
01:39and we would be staying there longer.
01:41Nah, I don't believe you.
01:43I'm not unpacking my stuff till I'm sure.
01:45Pinky promise.
01:47Okay, anything for you.
01:48But I have to navigate through a new school.
01:50Again.
01:51I'm sure it'll be fun here.
01:53After all, it's Hollywood.
01:54He was right.
01:55This put me one step closer to becoming a filmmaker.
01:58At my new school, I was nervous to redo the whole making new friends thing.
02:02For luck, I wore my favorite t-shirt to help give me confidence.
02:05I assumed, since it was LA, most kids at school would have a passion for movies.
02:09But I was in for a surprise when I was told there was no movie club at school.
02:13So, I got permission from the principal and created one.
02:16After school tomorrow?
02:17Sick.
02:18This is gonna be so fun.
02:19I was so excited for the first meeting and stayed up all night prepping.
02:23Well, I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up.
02:25Wanna know why?
02:26Cause nobody showed up.
02:27I was just about to give up when a boy who looked like he was in a boy band entered.
02:31Is this the movie club?
02:32Hmm, I guess I'm the star of the show today.
02:35Yeah, um, yes.
02:36Please, come right in.
02:37Wanna know why the Scarecrow got an Oscar?
02:40Excuse me?
02:40What?
02:41Because he was outstanding in his field.
02:43Duh.
02:44Why did I laugh?
02:45That was silly.
02:46Eh, don't worry.
02:47People here don't know how awesome movie clubs are.
02:49And, Lord of the Rings?
02:51That's one of my all-time faves.
02:52No way!
02:53Mine too!
02:54The guy was pretty fun and we bonded over our shared love of movies.
02:58Peter told me that his dream was to become an actor.
03:00So we met up every day after school except when he had swim team practice on the weekends.
03:05One time, he took me to his place and I was shocked.
03:08He lived in the most modern house with the most amazing art pieces and a wardrobe filled
03:13with costumes.
03:14Wow, this is all yours?
03:16Yeah, my parents are costume designers on movie sets so they bring home all the best pieces.
03:21Plus, I love cosplay.
03:23Peter suggested we try on costumes and I had so much fun.
03:27Whoa, you're the most beautiful elf.
03:29And you're a handsome one.
03:31It was the first time I found someone who liked the same things as me.
03:35And the more time I spent with him, the more I liked him.
03:38I even developed a tiny crush on him.
03:40When it was my birthday, Peter promised to go to the movies with me.
03:43And obviously, I was very excited.
03:45But he never showed up.
03:47I was a little angry and asked him about it the next day.
03:50My grandma was really sick and I was taking care of her all night.
03:53I didn't realize my phone was dead until later that night.
03:55I was so busy, I couldn't even inform you.
03:57I am so sorry.
03:58No, Peter, it's fine.
04:00No, it's not.
04:01I stood up a pretty girl.
04:03I promise to make it up to you.
04:05Ugh, that made my silly heart melt.
04:07But later that day, something totally bizarre happened.
04:10I overheard Peter telling his friends that he was with me the previous day.
04:15Oh, Selma, it's just, I don't tell people about my grandma and how sick she is.
04:19I don't want pity.
04:20You're special.
04:20That's why I told you the truth.
04:22Okay, but you have to be honest with me.
04:24Promise?
04:25Promise.
04:26To make it up to me, Peter took me shopping at one of the most expensive stores in town.
04:31As we entered, I ran into Stacy, our schoolmate who worked as a sales girl there.
04:35Turns out, Peter and Stacy were good friends.
04:37Stacy showed us around and that's when I saw the most beautiful thing in the world.
04:41A diamond bracelet.
04:42It wasn't like I could afford it, but they couldn't charge me for admiring it.
04:46It was really fun, but as we left, all of a sudden the alarms blared and security stopped us.
04:51What's happening?
04:53We didn't take anything.
04:54Ugh, no.
04:55It's his jacket.
04:56I forgot to take it off.
04:57Hey Stacy, here you go.
04:58I'm sorry.
04:59Don't worry, happens sometimes.
05:01Peter acted like it was nothing, but I could still feel my heart hammering in my chest.
05:06How are you so calm?
05:07That was so scary.
05:09What if we had gotten into trouble?
05:10Come on, it was a mistake.
05:12No big deal.
05:12And if we're ever in trouble, remember, I'll protect you.
05:15Oh my god.
05:16This was clearly one of the best days of my life.
05:19Oh, by the way, look in your bag.
05:21No way.
05:22You did not.
05:23When did you get it?
05:24I can't take it, Peter.
05:25It's really expensive.
05:27Shh.
05:27This is your birthday gift.
05:28I hope you like it.
05:29I love it.
05:30Peter, it's beautiful.
05:32Uh, what's going on here?
05:33Who's this?
05:34Oh, dad.
05:35Um, uh, this is Peter, my, uh, boyfriend.
05:38It's good to meet you, sir.
05:39I was just, uh, leaving.
05:40Is it all right if I ask some standard questions?
05:43Sure, but I know I have the constitutional right to remain silent.
05:47Just kidding.
05:48I quickly dragged dad back in before he could start interrogating on poor Peter.
05:52How'd you meet him?
05:53Tell me everything about him.
05:54Or else I'll have to look into him my way.
05:56And was he gonna kiss you?
05:58Yuck.
05:58Oh, dad.
05:59This is embarrassing.
06:00I met him at school and he's the sweetest and so talented.
06:03And we have many things in common.
06:05Hmm, he looked very scared to me.
06:07Does he know me?
06:08What is this?
06:08Looks expensive.
06:10Peter got it for me.
06:11And before you doubt how a high schooler can afford this, you should know his family is
06:14quite rich.
06:15So don't go digging around for information about him.
06:17I like him, okay?
06:19In the following days, dad was busy with work and I spent all my time with Peter.
06:23But on one date night, he was so distracted because his phone kept ringing constantly.
06:27And I'm not proud of what I did next.
06:29I found more than 10 missed calls from Stacy.
06:32Why was she calling?
06:33I was dying to ask him, but I couldn't speak after I saw the bill.
06:37Don't worry about it, dinner's on me.
06:39Peter, maybe next time we do small little things that don't require you spending so
06:43much money, I feel guilty.
06:45I don't mind.
06:46When we got to my place, dad rushed out.
06:49Uh, Selma.
06:50Sorry.
06:51Urgent work call.
06:52Gotta go, sweetie.
06:53Nice ride, Peter.
06:54I knew that look.
06:56That was his detective face.
06:57But thank God, whatever that urgent work call was about kept him pretty busy.
07:01Unfortunately, once he returned, he had tons and tons of questions about Peter.
07:05So many that I finally snapped.
07:08Can you just stop it?
07:09I'm finally settling in.
07:11Finally, I have someone who loves the same things as I do.
07:14I'm feeling accepted.
07:15And you start with your detective work.
07:17Just let me and Peter be.
07:19Dad, I really like him.
07:20Selma, I was just trying to look out.
07:23Don't look out for me.
07:24Dad, I need to experience the world myself.
07:27I won't be your little girl forever.
07:29You're right.
07:30I'm sorry, honey.
07:30Over the weekend, I was home alone and bored.
07:33So I decided to surprise Peter at his swim practice.
07:35But I couldn't find him anywhere.
07:36When I asked around, I got the most shocking news.
07:40There's no Peter on this team.
07:41There must be some mistake.
07:42Check again.
07:43I'm pretty sure.
07:45What the heck?
07:45Peter was lying to me about it for months?
07:48Even after he promised he wouldn't lie again?
07:50But why?
07:50I had to find out.
07:52Hey, do you want to go to the carnival now?
07:54Selma, on weekends I have swim practice, remember?
07:57I'll see you on Monday.
07:58Gotta go.
07:59Liar.
07:59I had so many thoughts and questions.
08:01And in the back of my mind, I knew it had something to do with Stacy.
08:05Ugh.
08:05I was so angry that I ignored all of Peter's calls and texts for the entire weekend.
08:10But at school, he stopped me and literally begged me to meet him at a cafe nearby after class.
08:15Okay, before I continue my story, I gotta say something.
08:18You know it takes only 10 seconds to tie your shoelaces.
08:20And it takes 9 seconds to fall in love with someone.
08:23But do you know how many seconds it takes to make a stupid decision?
08:26One second.
08:27Agreeing to meet Peter at the cafe was the stupid decision that changed my life.
08:31When I got to the cafe, I spotted him with Stacy and instantly saw red.
08:36She's why you lied about swim practice?
08:38Zelma, what do you mean?
08:40Cut it out, Peter.
08:41I know you've been seeing Stacy behind my back.
08:43Hey, hey.
08:44First of all, ew.
08:46I would never date this loser.
08:47He's like a brother to me.
08:49What?
08:49Look, Zelma.
08:50I'm sorry I lied, cause...
08:52Well, actually, on weekends, I do community service.
08:55I got a couple of speeding tickets.
08:56I'm not proud of it.
08:57And your dad's this grumpy cop.
08:59I was afraid that if I told you, you'd hate me.
09:02Please, forgive me.
09:03I was skeptical, but when he showed me those puppy dog eyes, I forgave him.
09:08Fine, but this is your last chance.
09:10So why did you ask me to come here?
09:12Why is she here?
09:13Actually, I need Peter's help to get things from my boyfriend's place,
09:16when the creep's not around.
09:17I wanted backup, so you can help too.
09:20You know, it'll be quicker.
09:21It's fine.
09:22I can help.
09:22And if your ex creates any trouble, I can ask my dad to help.
09:25He's a detective.
09:26That weekend, I met up with Stacy and Peter,
09:29and we went over to one of the biggest houses I'd ever seen.
09:32Two times bigger than Peter's.
09:34I assumed Stacy knew the passcode for the house.
09:36But after a couple of tries, she broke in instead.
09:39And quite easily.
09:40Hmm.
09:41I can't believe he changed it again.
09:43Okay, we have very little time before he gets back.
09:45So sweep the place, and if you find anything that doesn't look like it belongs to a man,
09:49grab it.
09:50I looked around and picked up all of our clothes and put it in the bag Peter gave me.
09:53And once I was done, I found Stacy and Peter grabbing all the expensive art pieces.
09:58Is all of that really yours?
10:00Why are you taking it?
10:02Um, it's mine.
10:03Trust me.
10:03Pick up those decoration pieces, Selma.
10:05Come on, chop chop.
10:06I could tell something was definitely fishy.
10:08So while Peter and Stacy weren't looking, I dialed 911.
10:12Peter, this isn't right.
10:13I think I know you guys are stealing.
10:15Bingo.
10:16Took you long enough.
10:17But hey, you're robbing the house too, just like us.
10:19How do you think I got you that?
10:21Yep, stolen.
10:22And you're wearing it.
10:23Now you're part of the gang.
10:24Surprise.
10:25I felt my head spinning.
10:26I couldn't believe Peter would do this.
10:28I knew I had to come up with some way to get out of there.
10:31Dad, I am so sorry.
10:32As if Dad heard me, suddenly he barged in through the door with other cops behind him.
10:37Like a hero.
10:38My hero.
10:39Apparently he had a location tracker installed on my phone and knew where I was.
10:43I know, invasion of privacy.
10:45But thank God.
10:46I'm so glad you're safe.
10:47Oh, we've been looking for this one for weeks.
10:49Finally, you're busted.
10:51Your own daughter is with us.
10:52If we go down, she goes down too.
10:55And that's how I ended up in the back seat of my dad's car, with my hands cuffed.
10:59But to Peter and Stacy's utter dismay, the moment I reached the station, I was set free.
11:03Because since I had dialed 911, the operator had heard everything Stacy had said.
11:08Still, how will you prove that we were part of the other robberies?
11:12It's not like anyone can recognize us.
11:14Wait a minute.
11:15Dad, were there any eyewitnesses to the burglaries?
11:18Uh, the witnesses said the culprits wore a disguise.
11:21Oh my God, I think I know where they're hiding the disguises.
11:25I told Dad about Peter's closet full of wigs and costumes,
11:28and even showed him the video footage of Peter's house and the vlog of him trying on the costumes.
11:33Look, Selma, please.
11:35Without these recordings, the cops got nothing on us.
11:37I'm sorry I lied to you so much, but I had no choice.
11:39At first, Stacy wanted me to get to know you, but then I started liking you so much.
11:44That's why I stole the bracelet.
11:45For you.
11:46Just for you.
11:46You know how much I like you.
11:48I even told my grandma about you.
11:50Huh? What grandma?
11:51Oh, please.
11:52Knock him up, Dad.
11:53Peter and Stacy got what they deserved.
11:55Jail time.
11:56And I couldn't have done it without my daughter.
11:59Just a few months after my unbelievable experience,
12:02I made my very own movie, Dating a Criminal, all about my time with Peter.
12:06I even used the real footage, and that movie helped me get a full scholarship to my dream film school.
12:12Sometimes, life throws us curveballs, and I was able to turn that into a life-changing opportunity.
12:18It's like a movie, only better.
12:24I'd like those movies, and I've got a movie, but I never got a movie, and I'd like to speak to it.
12:27Like, tonight I would go to go home for a movie, and I'm going to believe you, I'm going to go to London.
12:29This movie is probably the movie and I'm going to be the movie, and I really later.
12:30If you guys hope I miss it, love you, and I'll have a movie on that movie.
12:32And I'll have a movie.
12:34I just watched it.
12:34It's like a movie and I've been on that movie.
12:35I'd like to be the movie, and I've been on that movie.
12:38I've been on that movie, and I saw where you guys have to go and I'm going.
12:38What's going on?
12:40You guys have to live in myclub, and I've been there for a movie?
12:43I didn't know I took a movie.
