00:00hello and welcome on Eurosport we're watching the warm-up for today's Australian Grand Prix
00:08the eighth Australian Grand Prix John Watson and Allard Kow for bringing the warm-up and the race
00:13here on Eurosport and John could it be the third wet Australian Grand Prix well Allard those little
00:21drops of rain started to fall about half an hour ago they've stopped again but it is very much more
00:26overcast and cloudy than we've had it here over the last two or three days and that is the big worry
00:32that the weather that the weather forecasters know is in the area but have been reluctant to say
00:39precisely what time they expected to arrive could in fact be here already so we're just going to have
00:45to wait and see we don't know whether the clouds will pass by and then get a clear race or not but
00:51that is one of the big doubts that everybody here is well really fearing we see Nigel Mansell out of the
00:59pits and straight back in as normal and that's the man who is tipped by many including your two
01:07commentators to have a very strong chance of winning this year's Australian Grand Prix
01:13and Ayrton Senna on the front row alongside Nigel Mansell and in spite of Honda's withdrawal after
01:21this Grand Prix they have still put more well 100 percent into providing the team with the best
01:27possible chance of winning this their last Grand Prix for well let's say the short term future anyway
01:35and Ayrton Senna has made great use of that he was quickest in the Saturday qualifying session quicker
01:40than Nigel Mansell Mansell was impressed by Senna's performance he reckoned the McLaren team had
01:46picked up something like half a second over the time he had done on Friday because the day itself
01:51was probably up to a second or more slower than the Friday qualifying session and I'm sure Mansell
01:59will be very aware indeed that his arch rival Ayrton Senna is going to be quick out of the blocks
02:06into that first chicane some 300 meters from the start line here in Adelaide
02:12just saw a shot from Ayrton Senna a rearward facing shot and there is a lot of dust on the circuit
02:20I mean being a street circuit I think it is very dusty indeed John and dust dust is a problem in any
02:27street circuit but another problem here in Adelaide is of course all the support races that make up this
02:32weekend and in fact between this warm-up and the race I think there are two additional support
02:38races and we've had carts they put down a different sort of rubber we've got touring cars they put down
02:43a different kind of rubber so those are all the additional problems that team has to take into
02:48consideration right now in this warm-up session and everybody will have at least full tanks if not
02:54three-quarter tanks we've seen most people go out and fresh that is new tires and they're just really
03:01getting the last opportunity to find out what is it going to be like in three and a half hours time
03:07now certainly what they did on Friday afternoon and Saturday afternoon qualifying is going to be much
03:12more representative than the temperatures we have right now well we have to wait and see what the
03:17weather is going to bring when we get into the 16th and final round of the FIA formula one world
03:22championship of 1992 but that man Nigel Mansell is on pole position talking to a few people who've
03:29been out with him on the golf course during the week they say they've never seen him as relaxed he's
03:35very very confident indeed he has come here to win the Australian Grand Prix it also is his last
03:41Grand Prix that's another issue we don't know quite will that be the case or not there are now rumors
03:48circulating that Nigel is about to be bought out of his IndyCar contract that's an issue we'll get into
03:54probably during the course of the Grand Prix because it's so involved there's not enough time
03:58in this 30 minute session to get through it all man so who went in and out and put on another set of
04:08tires or he might actually be in his other car now we don't envisage tire stops but again we see how
04:17slippery it is and we'll not be surprised if raindrops start to fall and this place when it's wet it is
04:26very slippery indeed we've got eight people so far that have posted a time while Mansell goes
04:32slowly back into the pits or nine as days at the moment but Senna, Comas, Hakkinen, Fittipaldi,
04:41Gruyar, Modena, Guzmende, Cesarese and Schumacher they're the people that have done complete laps
04:49and there we look at the man and we ride with the man who won the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa
04:55and well with conditions changing he could be an outside bat as could John Lazy certainly in bad
05:03weather a lazy and Schumacher are outstanding and of course wet weather basically will help their cause
05:08and particularly in the case of a lazy whose car is pretty appalling in dry conditions
05:13and we know that a lazy skill and ability tends to overcome the drawbacks of his Ferrari but here's a
05:19typical example of traffic in Adelaide we're going to see a lot of this in the race it is very difficult
05:25indeed to pass around the Adelaide circuit Schumacher deciding either well I think he's just
05:30getting all that traffic go by he wants to get a clear lap he wants to do at least one lap at a
05:35representative speed so we let all that traffic ahead of him go by and someone behind him as well
05:40shoot by one of the two Dalaras now he's got a relatively clear road and this is the site coming
05:47into this first left then right chicane that's where Nespeti went off in Saturday qualification
05:53the first part taken in third gear then you short shift into fourth gear for the second part
05:59very easy to make a mistake on the exit of the first part as Nespeti clearly illustrated in qualifying
06:05on Saturday but it really looks Schumacher catching up again to that traffic one of the two Dalaras Martini
06:13and his Dalaras and then again you see this it's really very very frustrating indeed Schumacher is
06:24looking for a clear lap and now you can see just the odd droplet of moisture on that camera lens
06:32so anybody who currently has not had an opportunity to get one or two decent laps in
06:38ought to get on with the program because it is going to rain
06:50well a lot of frustration for Michael Schumacher he thought he had dropped back far enough and all
06:57he's done is just find himself right up behind another JJ later well JJ saw Schumacher there let him get
07:05through cleanly but neither driver really could get out of that fast as happened with any pace at all
07:18getting more and more drivers out on the circuit
07:25we've got 22 drivers who have have taken the circuit here in Adelaide
07:35and you are still riding with Schumacher and I don't know whether that's raindrops John or whether that
07:40is maybe dirt that came from other cars well it is moisture of some sort allowed it may have been
07:47from the overflow pipe the breather pipe and the back of another car ahead of Schumacher continuous we
07:53continue after the break with the warm-up here in Adelaide a 1.18.843 is currently the fastest time for
08:01Ayrton Senna in Adelaide during the warm-up for this afternoon's Grand Prix Gerhard Berger is in second
08:08place then it's Michael Schumacher in third Eric Comas in fourth and Michele Alvareto is in fifth place
08:17so both the McLarens well up there while Riccardo Patrace is just doing a 120.513
08:26and literally the moment we went to that commercial break we saw John Olesi once again
08:32spinning his Ferrari out around the back of the circuit out at Wakefield corner in fact
08:37so things really have not improved very much in the Ferrari team in terms of chassis performance
08:44but no damage and he just did another one of those a very impressive starts spun the car around and
08:51continued on and probably the team would be none the wiser unless they happen to be watching their
08:55monitor in the pits at that particular time we see places nine to 16 while you're behind this you're
09:02watching Ukiyo Katayama teammate Bertrand Gasio is well up there we see both the marchers who've done
09:09more laps and in the first qualifying session and we see Gasio Gruyar Lammers behind Katayama
09:16and Ayrton Senna in the background or is it Berger, it's Berger
09:20and as ever the Tyrell very quick down the straight well Gruyar also went very deep into that corner
09:29whether he saw Berger there or not he certainly allowed him to go through that may have just been
09:34a little bit of good luck for Berger he stuck his car out into the mirrors of Gruyar's car well before the
09:40corner so it could be no mistake that it was a red and white McLaren about to go past
09:45and there you can hear again that traction control device cutting in on the McLaren you can see
09:52all sorts of things lying on the circuit on that shot well what happens in that later course is after
09:59qualifying in the racing finishes the circuit is open people walk around the place and there's all
10:05sorts of rubbish left in the circuit it's quite a problem to get it clean in time for these cars to
10:10go out for this 30-minute session car sliding all over the place at the moment it's still Senna who
10:19is fastest Mansell is currently in 11th position but Gerhard Berger is closing in now passing

10:34Well Berger is just on a run here he's going to try and get in I would think three or four laps and then he'll
10:40go into the pits have another set of tires and if he wants to make a change he's got that opportunity
10:45as well but it's important now you notice just under braking there you can see again the glow from
10:49McLaren's the discs the carbon fiber carbon pad on that car and brakes are a big problem here and
10:58particularly a car like McLaren who throughout the season have been in some races slightly marginal on
11:04brakes here is a race that is very hard on brakes so they have made extra provision for this particular
11:11event Gerhard's fastest on the 118.745 so Gerhard Berger who's taken over top spot from teammate Ayrton Senna
11:21both the Williams drivers are third and fourth on the 119.1 and the 119.5
11:29Nicola Larini is up there on a 120 but I think John it's very much you mentioning it Berger on a run
11:37maybe three or four laps if you can get three or four consecutive laps without any traffic you're right
11:44in the ballpark well that's what you have to do you just got to go out and try and get those consecutive
11:49laps in get the tires run in get them accustomed to the circuit and the more laps of course you do
11:57generally speaking the quicker you will go
12:00we're back with John Lazy and he manages to get round the corner which a few moments ago he spun on
12:09Lazy is currently in seventh position right behind teammate Nicola Larini with the
12:15other Ferrari that's the active sprung Ferrari the car they didn't use in qualifying yesterday
12:22afternoon but they're definitely going to use it in the race also both in the top 10 are Mika
12:28Hakkinen and Johnny Herbert eight and ninth while Riccardo Petrezzi goes top of the list on the 118.490
12:35and he's two and a half seconds slower than Petrezzi well as you said that Johnny Herbert now pops up into the
12:48the top 10. Gashow ninth, Hakkinen eighth
12:56anyway it's Lazy who in these conditions always excels if it's wet he's going to be
13:04a joy to watch and here's another man who's driving his last Grand Prix for this team
13:10JJ Leto hoping for happier times than he has had last year or the year we've we finished here in
13:20Adelaide because it just has not been a happy season for the Finnish driver well of course he will be
13:26driving with the Sauber team in 1993 and we're hearing all the time of very very encouraging performances
13:34from that as yet unraced the Sauber with the Ilmor V10 engine and that's the the original Ilmor V10 the
13:42actual engine that car is meant to have is still not in a chassis and that's meant to be even better than
13:50the current Ilmor engine is so for JJ this probably represents the first really serious opportunity he has
13:59to be competitive in Grand Prix racing unlike his fellow Finn Mika Hakkinen both very talented both
14:05very quick very exciting I think that's a very important part today in Grand Prix racing to have
14:10a driver who actually makes it look exciting it's fine having a driver who goes round literally on rails
14:16but you want a little bit of cover a little bit of my goodness look at that slide
14:20JJ Leto coming up to the hairpin well that's nice now we're with Andre de Cesaris who has his best
14:29qualifying performance this year here in Adelaide he qualified seventh and again this Tyrol it's sliding on
14:37the break in there is very clearly not a lot of grip on the circuit well John how long has it been since
14:45we've had a Jordan in the top ten it's been quite a long time but we've now got Stefano Modena in eighth
14:50in eighth place and of course Jordan also running the last race with the Yamaha V12 engine before they move
14:57on to the V10 coming out of Harlow from Brian Hart but whether they are running on full tanks I do know
15:07that the Yamaha engine is particularly thirsty and Yamaha engineers have had to recalibrate their engine
15:15management system to ensure to guarantee that that engine and car will be able to complete full race
15:21distance it's another novelty I see that's an in-car camera with Andre de Cesaris and that is the first
15:28time we've seen that this year anyway Ricardo Patrici is the fastest man on the circuit for the moment he's
15:37on the 118.490 we're about 18 minutes into this warm-up session then it's Gerhard Berger Ayrton Senna is in
15:47third Mansell fourth Michael Schumacher is fifth then Nicola Laurini Bertrand Cascio Stefano Modena
15:55Gianna Lacy and Olivier Gruya we'll be back but and that's Nigel Mansell who has just completed the fastest
16:03lap of this warm-up session 117.982 is the fastest time so far Martin Brundel is up to sixth Nicola Laurini is
16:14still down in eighth and now up to fifth goes Mika Hakkinen so it's all changed as usual in those last 10
16:22minutes of the morning warm-up it's a bit more rubber down tanks are getting a little more empty and
16:31drivers are getting those three laps to get the times they want well a lot of time in the early
16:38part of this session of course is spent in and out of the pits everybody's had their car apart they've
16:44rebuilt it and in most cases you go out do a lap come in the team look at the car then you'll go out
16:52and do a couple of three laps come back in again and it's only after that then are you really prepared
16:59and ready to go out and try and do another series of three or four laps at something like a representative
17:05race speed and that's always why we see in the latter part of this 30 minute session suddenly a flurry of
17:11activity and in fact on our timing monitor here we barely can keep up with the changes because they come
17:17so frequently and that's really what's happening right now Martin Brundel the man who will start his last
17:26Grand Prix for Benetton this future is unknown there's a lot of talk about him going to maybe
17:35Jordan his name has been mentioned with Pacific and other teams there are a number of teams i think
17:41that would very much like to have Martin Brundel but Martin has done a great job this year for
17:46Benetton and he would like to move into a team that's going to allow him to maintain that momentum and
17:51hopefully even progress so the the options i think are not very great the best of which i would say
17:58the moves that are realistic and not the ones that are a fantasy land is uh driving for Eddie Jordan
18:03with that new heart v10 engine yeah because you're also there was also talk of the car you're looking
18:09at now that he has a chance of going there i think that that chance is probably unrealistic largely due to
18:14the the sponsorship situation in the McLaren team being a British driver uh is not the most advantageous
18:23thing for the sponsor's point of view and i think in fact we're going to see and again it's something
18:28we can develop over the Grand Prix itself there are a number of moves of foot to try and get under
18:36control the situation which we see in Formula One where you may have Ayrton Senna not race and we already
18:43assume that mantle is going to continue with his plans to take part in IndyCar racing and that is a very
18:49bad uh position for Grand Prix racing to be in particularly in a very difficult time in in a world economy
18:56Williams has gone back to where it was the last couple of races Mansell ahead of Riccardo Patresi
19:06then it's Gerhard Berger Michael Schumacher is now up to fourth place and Ayrton Senna is in fifth
19:13still on that 18-8 which was fastest time about 10 minutes ago Mika Hakkinen is in sixth Martin Brundle is
19:21now in seventh and Johnny Herbert is in eighth so looking at Riccardo Patresi there was talk that
19:27Riccardo would go back to Williams and he's not doing his chances any harm by posting the fastest time
19:33again well i think this is more just a function of just being on the circuit at a time you get that
19:40clear lap in he's now in traffic he's got to get past Johnny Herbert that ought not to be too big a
19:46problem because the horsepower advantage that that Renault V10 has over the the Ford V8 well there
19:53you can more or less see it and Mansell now closing up also Johnny in fact as I think decided to back
19:58off and let those two Williams get through unimpeded and we'll watch with interest as to what Nigel
20:06Mansell does as he push or allow Patresi just to get away from himself and then on the next lap past the
20:13pits then have another go at wrestling the the pride let's say of being the quickest man in this warm-up
20:20session now we're going to see pit stops that's the next big question it's the basically the first
20:30time the cars are run on full tanks in these conditions so after the warm-up the Gucci engineers
20:36can all see whether they need pit stops they only have the softest compound and well inevitably
20:45somebody will make a pit stop for tires because there'll be somebody out there who will abuse
20:51whatever tire you give them and that's going to happen and on on a street track it is a more
20:56aggressive form of race track and unless you've got got very good control over your emotions well that's
21:03what's going to happen so there are going to be people undoubtedly within 12 or 15 laps in the
21:08pits looking for tires but it is not part of the actual race strategy from Goodyear's point of view
21:14they've got the D compound that's their softest race compound they are very confident that it is not
21:20necessary to make a stop but as I say that doesn't prevent somebody from abusing that tire in the early
21:26part of the race when the car is at its heaviest and the tire is at its most vulnerable Ricardo Patrese
21:33going cleanly past Pierluigi Martini and now Nigel Mansell is stuck behind the Italian with but one
21:41corner to go and those discs on the Williams glow as well and Mansell a very courageous pass on
21:47Martini because Martini wasn't really about to allow him to get through by cooperating so Mansell just
21:53made room for himself bullied his way down the inside and pushed Martini off to the left
22:01well now Gianna Lezzi moves up the order and is in sixth position so two seconds slower than the
22:10drivers you're looking at now and Mansell really trying to chase Riccardo Patrese he can see Patrese he can
22:17close on him well that's well Patrese is slowing down he backed off and so really Patrese's done his
22:26little run he's quite happy with what he's done Ayrton Senna has now popped up into third place
22:30one minute 17.989 I was about to say what's happened to Ayrton Senna he if you like is the tip for the top
22:38here in Adelaide and uh throughout the session well for the the first 27 minutes of it he was behind
22:46Gerhard Berger he's now put himself one slot ahead of Berger Senna third Berger fourth Michael Schumacher
22:54virtually at the same time as Gerhard Berger but some 0.8 of a second behind Ayrton Senna
23:00four minutes to go they tell Riccardo and Nigel who is 0.6 of a second slower 18-0 that's slower than
23:14his fastest time so far and almost almost Nigel getting very wide he had to pass one of the two
23:18Minardis he got offline coming into that little left right it then was offline on the exit of it as well
23:26didn't slow him down very much oh and look look at that Nigel you're going to lose it oh you were very
23:31lucky there Nigel you were lucky you had to really get off the throttle now that may well have been
23:38the result of what took place two corners earlier compromise in those two corners earlier at the
23:44beginning of the lap trying to make up for it pushed very hard into that and you saw what happened it all
23:49went wrong Mr. Inch perfect Ayrton Senna currently third fastest for the man
24:00well listen to that well that traction control device I've heard it being tested at Silverstone
24:05and I mean it was ridiculous it comes in almost so early you think that's got to be a disadvantage
24:10rather than an advantage but of course what it does it enables Senna at that particular corner just to
24:17nail the throttle the traction device cuts in reduces the horsepower and then it feeds it back
24:23in when it feels that there's sufficient grip for it to do so makes the driver's job in many respects
24:29very much easier but takes away from the art and the craft in my mind of what a Grand Prix driver should
24:35be doing and Ayrton Senna at this intermediate point is faster than Ricardo Patrese you see the car
24:44little slides coming out of that corner but listen to that other way if that traction control device
24:52wasn't working you'd be seeing Senna fighting wheel spin or in fact in Senna's case he wouldn't fight
24:57wheel spin because he would be able to balance his foot on the throttle Gerhard Berger has just gone second
25:04Senna 17.651 now is a second Berger back to third Nigel Mansell all the way back to fourth
25:12and things are changing literally by the lap here in the remaining moments of this 30 minute session
25:19it looked like Ayrton lost something coming out of that or going into that last corner where he
25:25is three tenths slower than Riccardo Patrese Gerhard Berger and Nigel Mansell that's a nice
25:31Williams McLaren pair on the top four again Schumacher a lazy Brandl Hacken
25:37but he did seem to lock a wheel going into that last hairpin where we've seen other drivers struggle for grip
25:47and now Ayrton's backed off completely Nigel Mansell going slowly and the thing we could keep an eye on
25:57John is that still in the top ten is Nicola Lerini well both Ferraris going surprisingly well and one
26:05would think and i believe that both those Ferraris are not running full tanks they don't traditionally do
26:12that and lazy's time very impressive indeed for a very hard car to drive around a bumpy circuit
26:18but Lerini probably equally impressive running in ninth place at this stage
26:24Ayrton Senna back to third place again now Nigel Mansell has gone faster on a 1.17.5 so
26:33but look at that cars sliding all over the place you could you would wonder if it just
26:39started to rain a little bit cars look like that there's just no grip at all is there
26:43well cars are very stiff it is a very bumpy circuit most of these corners are relatively low speed
26:50corners so the the downforce is not let's say that high for the amount of grip they're not
26:56they're trying to generate so by being somewhat brutal on the wheel as sometimes you see drivers
27:02being on a street track that combination usually ends up in people spinning off
27:07the warm-up is at an end the teams can get ready to go racing and of course you can see the race live
