En effet, alors que cette 3e étape autour de Kelso (143,8 km) semblait promise aux sprinteuses, c'est un petit groupe de cinq attaquantes qui s'est joué la gagne, avec la victoire de Cat Ferguson. A l'issue d'une étape courrue sous des conditions météorologiques dantesques et marquée par de nombreuses chutes, dont celles de la leader du général Kristen Faulkner (EF Education-Oatly), la Britannique de la Movistar Team s'est offerte son premier succès en WorldTour, devant Josie Nelson (Picnic PostNL) et Ally Wollaston (FDJ-Suez). Grâce à ce succès, Ferguson s'empare également du maillot de leader.
