00:05a shooting Thursday night in the city's Chatham neighborhood. The officer, identified as 36-year-old
00:11Crystal Rivera, was fatally shot while responding to an incident near the 8200 block of South
00:17Drexel Avenue, according to the Chicago Police Department, CPD. The incident occurred at
00:22approximately 9.50 p.m. when officers from the 6th District Tactical Team attempted to stop a male
00:28suspect. As they approached, the suspect fled on foot and entered a nearby building.
00:34Officers pursued the individual inside. During the pursuit, officers encountered a second suspect
00:40who was armed with a rifle, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling confirmed.
00:45An exchange of gunfire occurred, during which Officer Rivera was shot.
00:50A fellow officer returned fire, though it is unclear if the suspect was struck.
00:54Officer Rivera was transported in a squad car to the University of Chicago Medical Center,
01:00where she was later pronounced dead due to her injuries. Rivera had served with the CPD for
01:06four years and was assigned to the 6th District. She was also a mother.
