Exclusive: Israel to join high-profile Brussels meeting despite cooling EU relations

Israel will participate in a meeting with the EU’s southern neighbours in Brussels this month regardless of the bloc’s hardening stance over its actions in Gaza, according to several Israeli and EU officials.

00:00The EU's 27 foreign ministers are scheduled to meet their Mediterranean counterparts from
00:0710 non-European countries, including representatives from Israel, a senior Israeli official told
00:13Euronews.
00:14The participation of Israeli foreign minister Gideon Saar is still to be confirmed, the
00:19official said.
00:20The EU Southern Neighborhood Ministerial Meeting is aimed at deepening the bloc's cooperation
00:25with Israel, as well as Algeria, Palestine, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria
00:31and Tunisia.
00:33But the meeting comes at a time of unprecedented cooling of relations between the EU and Israel.
00:39EU Foreign Policy Chief Kayakala stated last month that the bloc would examine if Israel
00:44has violated its human rights obligations under Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.
00:51An EU official said that the meeting will not be a forum to discuss the ongoing
00:55war in Gaza, but a routine gathering conducted under the EU Southern Neighborhood Partnership.
