00:00On this day in space. In 1965, NASA astronaut Ed White became the first
00:06American to walk in space. White left the safety of his Gemini 4 spacecraft
00:11equipped with a space suit, a tether, and a small gas gun for maneuvering. The
00:15spacewalk occurred just months after the first ever spacewalk by Soviet
00:18cosmonaut Alexei Leonov on March 18, 1965. White floated near the spacecraft
00:23for about 23 minutes. He was reluctant to finish his spacewalk because the
00:27experience was so exhilarating. He had to be ordered back into the spacecraft.
00:31While reentering, White stated, I'm coming back in and it's the saddest moment of my
00:36life. There was a problem with the hatch mechanism, making it difficult for White
00:40to open and relatch. This threatened the lives of both White and the command
00:43pilot, James McDivitt, but they were eventually able to get White back in,
00:47making history in the process. And that's what happened on this day in space.
