00:38Blue Apron, a better way to cook.
00:44I remember the first time I ever saw a Dragon Ball fight.
00:47It was that moment when Goku demolished Raccoon on Planet Namek,
00:50and from that moment on, I was hooked on the Dragon Ball series.
00:53Truth is, fights are such a big part of what makes the Dragon Ball franchise so memorable,
00:57and talking about them here at the office,
00:59we got to thinking, hey, we should probably show you guys the 10 best fights in the whole series.
01:03But we're not going to count super, because that show's not done yet,
01:05and also that could be a Top 10 in and of itself.
01:08So hey, I'm Nervous Nick from ScrewAttack's Top 10 Dragon Ball fights.
01:15Some Dragon Ball fights, not all, but some, fall into a predictable pattern.
01:20Step 1, try to beat the bad guy.
01:22Step 2, fail to beat the bad guy.
01:23Step 3, Goku shows up and beats the bad guy anyway.
01:26What's cool about the first fight against Broly is that it's everyone versus Broly.
01:31Goku, Piccolo, Trunks, and Gohan all carry their weight here.
01:35Don't get us wrong, we're putting it low on the list for a reason.
01:38Vegeta spends most of the fight crying,
01:40the solution still ends up being,
01:41let Goku do his Goku thing,
01:43and we have no idea how five healthy warriors are less effective than one guy borrowing the strength of four wounded ones.
01:49But it's still a different dynamic than almost any other Dragon Ball fight,
01:53and we can respect it for that.
01:55Number 9.
01:57Speaking of Goku hogging the spotlight,
02:00poor Vegeta, man.
02:01Everybody seems to love his character,
02:03but it's so rare that he gets to really shine.
02:05If he had gotten his revenge against Golden Frieza,
02:08we would have put that way higher on this list.
02:10But since he got Goku'd,
02:12we'll have to settle for Vegeta's butt whooping on Android 19.
02:15For once, Goku got Goku'd by the Prince of All Saiyans thanks to a convenient heart virus,
02:20and Vegeta got to carry a moment all on his own.
02:23Not only was this the big reveal that Vegeta had figured out how to become a Super Saiyan,
02:28it was also the first time we got to see one of Vegeta's signature moves,
02:31the famous Big Bang Attack.
02:33It's really too bad Vegeta doesn't get more moments like this.
02:37Number 8.
02:39Not every fight has to be a close one to be worthy of being on this list.
02:43It's okay for some of them to be stomps,
02:45as long as they're still entertaining.
02:46And you know what's entertaining?
02:48Watching Nazis get their comeuppets at the hands of some Super Saiyan kids.
02:52In the DVZ movie Fusion Reborn,
02:54there's a side plot where Hitler and an army of Nazi zombies
02:58start driving their tanks through the city,
03:00so Goten and Trunks respect the crap out of their opinions
03:03with the Super Ghost Kamikaze attack.
03:05I never thought so much loss of life could be so beautiful.
03:10Number 7.
03:12Truth be told, this just barely even counts as a fight at all,
03:15but it's such a good moment that we'll sneak it onto the list anyway.
03:19By the time Cell had reached his semi-perfect form,
03:22whatever is up with that name,
03:24Tien had long since stopped being a relevant fighter.
03:27If you weren't a Saiyan, a robot, or at the very least a green alien,
03:30you were basically just bad guy fodder.
03:32Tien knew that,
03:34but he also didn't care.
03:35He used his patented tri-beam attack to pin down Cell
03:38and let Android 18 make her escape.
03:40Sure, he was pretty much just stalling for time here,
03:43but Tien's onslaught is just too awesome to ignore.
03:46By the way, has anybody else noticed how Tien uses his hands to make a triangle
03:50to shoot a circle that makes a square?
03:51How does that work?
03:53Number 6.
03:55Everybody knows that Goku is constantly trying to push himself as a fighter.
03:59It's like one of his most defining traits.
04:01But that whole mentality goes back to one specific fight.
04:05The grand finals of the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament.
04:08The young Goku in training took on Master Ru-
04:11Sorry, Jackie Chun,
04:14in a match that gave us the first ever beam struggle,
04:17Goku transforming into the Uzaru,
04:19and Jackie Chun blowing up the moon!
04:22But most importantly,
04:23after the most hard-fought battle of his life,
04:26Goku was at last declared
04:28the loser of the fight.
04:30And because he lost,
04:31he learned that there would always be somebody out there stronger than him,
04:35which only motivated him to push his own limits for the rest of his life.
04:40Yeah, it bummed him out for like five seconds,
04:42but then he ate like half a million zenni worth of food,
04:44so, you know, life was good.
04:46Number 5.
04:48Dragon Ball Z let you know right away
04:50that stuff was gonna get real.
04:52In the lead-up to DBZ's first major showdown,
04:55the body count had already piled up
04:57with some of your favorite characters from the last series.
05:00But it all came to a head
05:01when Goku went face-to-face with the sane invader, Vegeta.
05:04You want screamin' power-ups?
05:06You got screamin' power-ups.
05:07You want beam struggles?
05:08You've got beam struggles!
05:10You want giant monkeys getting their tails cut off by Samurai Jack Black?
05:13Baby!
05:13You're covered!
05:14But most importantly,
05:15this was where the legendary Goku-Vegeta rivalry
05:18that defined the rest of Dragon Ball was born.
05:22Though, to be fair,
05:23I'd also want revenge for the rest of my life
05:24if I lost with a naked kid landing on me.
05:26Major props to Vegeta's publicist, though,
05:28because if that leaked out in this day and age,
05:30he'd never see the end of it.
05:33Number 4.
05:35For like 17 years,
05:38Dragon Ball had laid mostly dormant.
05:40Yeah, there was DBZ, Kai, and a couple OVAs,
05:42but nothing really earth-shattering.
05:44Then, in 2013,
05:46the clouds parted and Akira Toriyama
05:48descended down on a beam of light
05:50where he blessed us,
05:52dear fellow Dragon Ball fans,
05:54with Goku vs. Beerus,
05:56the Battle of Gods.
05:58And we all proclaimed,
05:59HALLELUJAH!
06:00Unto us, a new Dragon Ball movie is born!
06:02I've officially taken this metaphor too far,
06:05but hey,
06:05technically this isn't Dragon Ball Super,
06:07so we're not breaking our rules here!
06:08This is hands down,
06:09the most beautifully animated Dragon Ball fight
06:12on this entire list.
06:13Thanks to modern-day animation techniques,
06:15there is a fluidity to Goku and Beerus' movements
06:18that we just didn't get in any other battle.
06:20And who here didn't get hyped when Goku screamed,
06:23I will not let you destroy my world!
06:26This fight wasn't just important
06:28because it meant more adventures for Goku in the game,
06:30it meant that we, as Dragon Ball fans,
06:33had something to get excited for again.
06:35Can I get an amen?
06:36Number 3.
06:38If there's one thing
06:39that I don't like very much
06:41about most fights in DBZ onward,
06:43it's that everybody is, like,
06:44too good at fighting.
06:45What I mean here is,
06:47every single character moves
06:48at such stupidly high speeds
06:49that a lot of the time,
06:51they're barely even animated.
06:52Yeah, it's great for giving us
06:54a sense of the level
06:55they're fighting at and all,
06:56but there's something to be said
06:57about lower-level fights too.
06:59Go back and watch Goku vs. Krillin
07:02in Dragon Ball's World Martial Arts Tournament,
07:04and you'll see what I mean.
07:05Even though it aired way back in 1988,
07:08this fight still has some of the best animation
07:11and choreography
07:12in the entire Dragon Ball storyline.
07:15Like, look at this!
07:16It's so freaking good!
07:17On top of that,
07:18it's also just full of funny
07:20and clever moments
07:21that sort of went missing
07:22from the series for a long time.
07:24Goku using a Kamehameha to smack himself
07:25into Krillin?
07:26Golden.
07:27And for that,
07:28it's still one of Dragon Ball's very best.
07:31Number 2.
07:33You all knew this was gonna be high on the list.
07:34Few fights in Dragon Ball
07:36were as definitive
07:37as Goku vs. the alien tyrant Frieza.
07:40A couple important firsts happen here
07:42that forever changed the Dragon Ball story.
07:45For one thing,
07:45it's the first time an entire planet
07:47got caught in the crossfire of a battle.
07:48Not to mention,
07:49the unforgettable debut
07:51of the Super Saiyan.
07:53And that ending with Frieza,
07:55you know,
07:55splitting up, so to speak?
07:58Probably the most gruesome thing
08:00I had seen in a TV show
08:01the first time I saw that.
08:02The entire battle
08:03had this awesome sense of urgency
08:05with the planet Namek
08:06being torn asunder
08:07right around Goku and Frieza.
08:10That is,
08:10it felt urgent
08:11until about five episodes
08:12after Frieza said
08:13it'd be toast in five minutes.
08:15You just had to say
08:1620 minutes, Frieza.
08:1720 minutes or so,
08:18that would have been
08:19way more believable.
08:20It's...
08:21Number 1.
08:22The entire saga of Dragon Ball
08:26could have ended nicely
08:27in a lot of places.
08:29As much fun as Super has been,
08:30part of me still wishes
08:31that the whole thing concluded
08:32at the number one fight
08:34in the entire franchise.
08:36The climactic battle
08:37of Gohan versus Cell.
08:40Everybody who's seen this epic fight
08:42knows why it's so good.
08:44It's the big payoff
08:45after spending all of DBZ
08:47hinting at Gohan's hidden power.
08:49Cell poops out some babies,
08:50the babies hurt the good guys,
08:52and Gohan explodes
08:53and beats the crap out of Cell.
08:54We've said before
08:55that this whole fight
08:56was both exciting and emotional
08:58when it culminates
08:58in the single greatest moment
09:00of DBZ.
09:02The father-son Kamehameha.
09:05Oh man, this part gets me every time.
09:06You can't see it right now,
09:07but I got goosebumps.
09:08If goosebumps could be picked up
09:09on a mic, you'd hear them.
09:11Gohan versus Cell raised the bar
09:12for Dragon Ball fights
09:13to a height that,
09:14in our opinion,
09:15still hasn't been topped.
09:17If Dragon Ball had ended there,
09:18yeah, we would have
09:19definitely been sad,
09:20but we would also
09:21have been satisfied.
09:23This episode's secret number 11
09:25goes back to the OG Dragon Ball
09:27for Krillin versus Jackie Chun.
09:29I seriously don't know
09:30how this disguise fooled anyone.
09:31Anyway, we love this fight
09:32for the moment
09:33when Krillin and Jackie
09:34do an attack so fast
09:36that nobody could see it,
09:37and then they spend
09:38three straight minutes
09:39explaining what happened.
09:41It's super silly,
09:42and we super love it.
