00:00Welcome back to Nightly News Kids Edition. I'm Lester Holt. It's great to be with you.
00:04We have an awesome lineup ahead, from the Puppy Bowl to Dog Man to our Picture of the Week.
00:10Plus, we'll test your new smarts, but first, let's begin with one of the stories making headlines this week.
00:16President Trump has said he plans to impose tariffs on some imported goods from certain countries.
00:23According to the president, the goal is to boost American manufacturing,
00:26strengthen border security, and end what he says are unfair trade practices.
00:33And this got us thinking, what exactly are tariffs? Let's find out.
00:38A tariff is a tax on a product that goes from one country to another.
00:43The most common one is import tariffs.
00:46These tariffs are taxes placed on goods imported from other countries,
00:51like furniture, toys, clothes, and electronics.
00:55The best way to think about a tariff is it's just, it's a bill that you're handed right there by the customs agent.
01:02Here you go. Here is your container full of basketballs.
01:07And you thought it was going to cost $10,000.
01:10It's going to cost $10,000 plus 10% extra.
01:13And that 10% extra bill goes right to the U.S. government.
01:16And the person who paid that bill is the person who bought those basketballs to send to the stores to sell to you.
01:23Tariffs are nothing new. In fact, tariffs have existed for hundreds of years.
01:28The United States and other countries have negotiated, made agreements, and sometimes even disagreed on tariffs.
01:36Tariffs can be enacted for economic reasons, like to try and strengthen the economy, or for political reasons.
01:44Tariffs generally show that relations between countries are deteriorating.
01:50And you want to be in a situation, I think, where you're working with your friends and allies,
01:55and you're on good terms with your competitors, and you don't have relations between countries that are getting worse.
02:01In addition to possibly making things cost more at the store, tariffs can have a huge impact on the global economy.
02:10So paying attention to tariffs can help you understand more about what's happening.
02:16The more you know from valued news sources, that's important.
02:20You can see how world leaders are trying to do what's best for their own position in their own country,
02:25and sometimes it takes compromise, right, for everyone to be able to win.
02:29All right, let's turn now to another story that's been making headlines,
02:34and it's one that frankly has shaken a lot of us.
02:36And kids, you may want to grab a parent or grown-up to watch this next segment.
02:41We're talking about the tragic collision that took place last week in Washington, D.C.,
02:46involving an Army helicopter and a commercial airliner.
02:49We know that's pretty scary, but flying experts have been quick to remind us remains the safest way to travel.
02:57Serious accidents and crashes involving commercial planes are extremely rare.
03:02And part of the reason why is the work of the National Transportation Safety Board.
03:08We thought this was a good moment to learn more about the NTSB mission and who they are.
03:13The National Transportation Safety Board is an independent federal agency tasked with making transportation safer.
03:22The NTSB, as it is usually known, investigates accidents, crashes, and other serious events involving aviation, highways, marine, and railways.
03:34The NTSB even investigates incidents related to pipelines, as well as the transportation of hazardous materials.
03:41On call, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, NTSB investigators travel through the U.S. and around the world
03:52in response to transportation accidents and disasters to determine the cause, examine safety issues,
04:00and eventually make safety recommendations to help prevent future mishaps, all in the name of saving lives.
04:08After each investigation, we issue recommendations aimed at preventing that tragedy from reoccurring.
04:16Each of those recommendations can save lives, yet many of them remain to be implemented.
04:21I will say that I've had tremendous conversations with the new Secretary of Transportation about moving some of those forward
04:29and his focus on safety, and I'm very encouraged by those conversations.
04:34One agency dedicated to making flying and all forms of transportation safer.
04:43Such important work they do.
04:46Okay, now let's test your news smarts and see if you've been paying attention to the news headlines this week.
04:52At the Grammy Awards on Sunday, Beyoncé finally won Album of the Year for the first time for Cowboy Carter.
04:59The question, who presented Beyoncé with the Grammy?
05:02Was it members of the A, Los Angeles County Fire Department, B, Los Angeles Philharmonic, or C, the Recording Academy?
05:12I'll give you a few seconds to think about it.
05:19Okay, time's up.
05:20The answer is A, Los Angeles County Fire Department.
05:23That's right, two members from the L.A. County Fire Department presented Beyoncé with the Grammy for Album of the Year.
05:31The 67th Grammy Awards took place Sunday night in Los Angeles and highlighted the city's resiliency after the devastating wildfires last month.
05:41Okay, time for our Picture of the Week.
05:43The Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his den in front of a big crowd in Gobbler's Knob, Pennsylvania on Sunday and did indeed see his shadow, signaling six more weeks of winter.
05:55In a tradition that dates back nearly 140 years, Phil has predicted a longer winter far more often than an early spring.
06:04But he is not the most accurate groundhog, I'm told.
06:07He's right less than half the time.
06:10Well, in case you haven't heard, there's a big game this weekend.
06:13We're talking, of course, about the Super Bowl.
06:16The Kansas City Chiefs will face off against the Philadelphia Eagles.
06:20Our Kids Edition correspondent, Joaquin, is here with a preview of all the excitement.
06:33It's called a rematch.
06:34For the second time in three years, the Philadelphia Eagles faced the Kansas City Chiefs in a Super Bowl showdown, this time in New Orleans after the Caesars Superdive.
06:48So how did the two teams stack up?
06:50The Kansas City Chiefs currently hold the championship title after last year's win over San Francisco and are looking to make history.
07:00If they win this year's Super Bowl, the Chiefs will be the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
07:06It's a special run that we've been on.
07:07And so every time I'm here at media night or on this football field in the Super Bowl, I'm going to appreciate those moments.
07:12You never know what will be your last one.
07:13How about those?
07:14I got a Chiefs hat, Kansas City shirt, Chiefs jacket, and I got my Chiefs socks.
07:21Kansas City is known not just for the star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, but also for their fouls.
07:27The city has over 200 of them.
07:29And their style of barbecue.
07:32Oh, and there's a swift event.
07:34There was a huge spike in interest in the Chiefs games when Taylor first started attending the games to support her boyfriend, Travis Kelsey.
07:41Over a thousand miles away, the Eagles are known for their massive families.
07:47Eagles fans are as wide-ranging as they are loyal.
07:50Eagles!
07:51We've worked really hard to have this opportunity, so to do it and be back two times out of four years starting this is very special.
07:58This 102-year-old super fan recently went high.
08:01My favorite team is Eagles!
08:07Another big fan is sixth-year-old Jato Barclay, Saquon's daughter.
08:13The two have a signature handshake for this game.
08:16And speaking of Saquon, this year the Super Bowl falls on his 28th birthday.
08:20Talk about a celebration.
08:21One of my favorite quotes that they say all the time, you can't be great without being great as a mother.
08:25That's the reason why we'll be successful, and it's going to take everyone again this Sunday.
08:28E-A-E-L-E-S, Eagles!
08:32Outside of football, Philadelphia, often referred to as the city of brotherly love, is known for so much, like the Liberty Bell, Reading Terminal, and their world-famous cheesesteaks.
08:43Now I've been thinking about it, guess what?
08:45The halftime show will feature Kendrick Lamar and Sisman.
08:49And we can't forget about the famous hats.
08:51Here's a sneak peek at a nerds commercial featuring Shabuzzi.
08:54And guess what?
09:01Since the 1950s, every football used by the NFL in the Super Bowl has been handcrafted at this factory in Ohio.
09:11So much to look forward to.
09:12I'm definitely going to be one of the 200 million people expected to watch on Sunday.
09:17We can bring two beautiful cities together to compete and have fun, and it's a beautiful opportunity to really, you know, shine some light on the good things in this world right now.
09:24From Nightly News Kids Edition, I'm Joaquin.
09:27Back to you, Lester.
09:31Joaquin, thanks very much.
09:32Now to the other big game on Sunday.
09:35Yes, there is another big game, but sure to be a doggone good time.
09:39We're talking about the Puppy Bowl.
09:41Let's get details from our friend Aaron McLaughlin.
09:43Back to the field, Fluff, Maya, and Bell are back at it.
09:47It's a super lineup with possum appeal.
09:52Touchdown!
09:53These players all competing in the Puppy Bowl.
09:56Imagine human football, but miniaturized, and instead of human players, it's puppy players.
10:00And instead of trained players, it's untrained players.
10:03So everything is unpredictable.
10:05Oh!
10:06She stripped her own teammates' bandana.
10:10Team Ruff and Team Fluff are set to go head-to-head.
10:13Fluff's bar tent has a hold of Lex Woffer's collar.
10:16As the Call to Adoption event is returning for its 21st year.
10:20All these players are up for adoption.
10:22They're all from shelters.
10:23She's come down with a case of the zoomies.
10:26The lineup features 142 puppies from 80 different animal shelters and rescues across 40 states.
10:33We like to say in Puppy Bowl that there's no underdogs.
10:35They're all overdogs.
10:36Meaning they're all stars in their own way.
10:39And they're all winners in their own way because they all get adopted and find a home.
10:43There's Beethoven, D-Bone Samuel, Paz Allen, and Saquon Barkey.
10:49Who has his counterpart also competing on Sunday.
10:52And say hello to Enrique.
10:54That is the face of a warrior.
10:56Enrique hails from Puerto Rico.
11:00So Enrique was rescued from the streets along with his litter and swung here.
11:06He can jump high.
11:07He can run fast.
11:08He's too friendly.
11:09He needs to be a little more aggressive out there on the field.
11:12There's also several special needs dogs like Trio, which we're told is looking good on the field.
11:17Some of Trio's strengths are despite only having three legs and a bone deformity, he's a lot faster than you'd think.
11:25So don't count him out.
11:27He's kind of like the low rider and able to kind of weave in and out and dodge some of the defense on the field.
11:33Aside from these pups being so doggone cute, the Puppy Bowl's main mission, raise awareness about adoption and finding dogs their forever homes.
11:42Adopting a shelter dog is one of the best decisions you'll make in your life.
11:45It's not hard to get an adorable puppy adopted who's on national TV.
11:50When we're showcasing one dog, we're really showcasing the entire rescue that has worked to get that dog on TV.
11:56So the whole community behind each and every one of the 142 dogs that you see, that dog's part of the litter.
12:02They have four or five siblings that need a home.
12:04They have a parent, a mom that probably needs a home.
12:07A lot of people will call into Puppy Bowl and say, I want to adopt, say, Enrique.
12:10Okay, so the important thing here is not the shine that we're just putting on these players, but the uptick in adoption inquiries gives them a little bit of a boost up and lets them be seen by families that may not otherwise see them.
12:22These puppies scoring touchdowns of their own and hoping to bring their own team spirit to an important cause.
12:30Okay, Aaron, thanks.
12:35And just a reminder, you can catch Puppy Bowl this Sunday on Animal Planet and streaming on Max.
12:41The fun starts at 2 p.m. Eastern Time.
12:44Turning now to this week's Kids Spotlight.
12:47A new animated movie based on a beloved kids' book series is in theaters right now.
12:52The film answers the question, what happens when a police officer who is half-man, half-dog goes head-to-head with a super-feline villain?
13:02Our Kids Edition correspondent, Andres, takes a look at Dog Man.
13:07Dog Man!
13:09Dog Man!
13:11Dog Man is jumping off the page and hitting a big screen.
13:14Two of the city's brightest must come together.
13:22The new movie is based on the popular book series by Dave Pilkey, who came up with the idea when he was just a kid.
13:28I was always getting in trouble at school and always getting sent on the hallway, and so I figured since I'm out there I might as well draw.
13:34And pretty soon I was making comics, and that's where Dog Man started.
13:37Dog Man tells the story of a police officer and his trusted police dog.
13:41Hit the siren!
13:41After the two face an injury on the job, one day we sew the dog's head onto the man's body.
13:49Great idea!
13:50A life-saving surgery merges them together, and Dog Man is born.
13:54Do it, do it, do it, do it.
13:58Dog Man!
13:59Dog Man must learn to adapt to his new form and protect and serve his community against a new super villain.
14:05You gotta take over the world!
14:07Ha ha ha ha!
14:08Roo!
14:08Peter Hastings, the writer and director, is the voice behind Dog Man.
14:12Roo!
14:13Well, it was kind of like, Roo!
14:16Roo!
14:16And, uh, Roo!
14:18Roo!
14:18Roo!
14:19I'm kind of alone at that.
14:20They're a fantastic voiceover artist who do incredible animal sounds, but I kind of didn't want it to be perfect.
14:25I want it to be that half-man, half-dog.
14:28You don't mean to get down!
14:29No, Ralph Howrie.
14:31Please, chief.
14:31Head of the police force.
14:33Dog Man, go on the right feet!
14:34Roo!
14:35Why do you know I gotta lift up?
14:37Look, it's down my belt!
14:39Dog Man is such a beloved book series.
14:41Was there any pressure to bring the chief to life, knowing so many fans already love this character?
14:46No, it wasn't pressure.
14:47It was actually more excitement than anything.
14:49To be able to actually be the voice of chief.
14:51I read these books from our kids when they were growing up, when they were younger.
14:55And so, like, to be able to be a voice that comes to life from the book.
14:59I was in from the first part, so I wasn't even nervous.
15:02I was excited just to really do the book.
15:04Alright, so what's something surprising about voicing an animated character that most people wouldn't expect?
15:09Um, you would have to have a whole lot of energy to be doing.
15:13Cut it out.
15:16Stop it.
15:19Especially if you're doing it for children to enjoy.
15:24Like, if you've been one of the cartoon movies, you can kind of keep it like that, but anytime you're doing anything but children are growing up, you've got to be really animated.
15:33Stop licking the inside of my mouth!
15:34You've got to have a lot of energy.
15:36So, what's your favorite Dog Man line?
15:40Bro!
15:44I'm the greatest villain of all time!
15:48Pete Davidson is the voice of Petey the Cat, Dog Man's feline nemesis.
15:53Who serves up lots of trouble around town.
15:56It's time to stop this super cow!
15:59It's not going to ruin my evil plan to destroy all dooders.
16:03I came in and I tried to do like four or five different voices.
16:07And they were like, that's terrible.
16:09Just be yourself.
16:11Pete Davidson brought this crazy, beautiful energy that he could yell and scream and be the bad guy.
16:18No one could stop me!
16:20Not even Dog Man!
16:21But he's a very sweet person, and that's what comes out from this character, you know, as the movie goes on.
16:27And so he played it really brilliantly.
16:30Ooh, is that fun?
16:31There's also Lil' Petey!
16:33A colorful song, voiced by kid actor Lucas Hopkins Calderon.
16:37You're destined to be a villain.
16:39Ooh, is that fun?
16:40So much fun!
16:41Yay!
16:42Everybody in the cast just brought a lot, brought so much to the, to the movie.
16:45I don't know what I'm saying.
16:46This is Dog Man is an awesome adventure.
16:49The drawings in the movie look like they've come to life.
16:51For real!
16:52The movie's packed with lots of humor and heart.
16:55And some great takeaways, too.
16:57What lessons do you think kids can learn from this movie, Dog Man?
17:00You know, one of the great lessons kids can learn from this movie is just to have sympathy.
17:06He had to have empathy for others.
17:10Right?
17:11One thing I look at about Lil' Petey, Lil' Petey was so forgiving.
17:14And the way he wanted to bring Grandpa and his dad, Papa together, Papa together, I thought was really cool.
17:21And he said it in the movie, too, at one point, when Petey was talking about all the things his dad did to him.
17:27And Lil' Petey was like, well, I forgave you.
17:31And that are happening again?
17:36So forgiveness is a big lesson I want a lot of children to learn.
17:42The message in this movie is really, ultimately, in the end, is that things can be difficult, but they're going to be okay.
17:48You know, it's this wonderful sentiment that's expressed late in the movie.
17:52And I just really had this desire that somebody, you know, sitting in the theater, and at the end of the movie, you know, they just look at who they're with and smile.
18:00And go, like, you know, it's going to be okay.
18:02Let's go get a burger.
18:05Dog Man, get up.
18:06You're the only one that can stop them with all your comfort skills and your peanut butter to do a night.
18:11No time to waste it.
18:13Dog Man is out now in theaters across the country.
18:16For Nightly News Kids Edition, I'm on video.
18:18Back to you, Liston.
18:21Andres, that was terrific.
18:23Thanks.
18:24And we should note, Dog Man is produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures, part of our parent company, NBCUniversal.
18:33Finally, in our inspiring kids series, a story about paying it forward.
18:37One 8-year-old Philadelphia Eagles fan had a choice to make.
18:41Take $1,000 in cash or pick a mystery Eagles mascot to see what came along with it.
18:49And what happened next touched hearts across America.
18:53We get details from our friend Jenna Bushhaker.
18:55It was a simple choice that revealed an extraordinary heart.
19:01When popular influencer Indy Motivator posted he was looking for a deserving Eagles fan to surprise,
19:07Declan LeBaron's family knew their passionate 8-year-old was the perfect choice.
19:11Jillian LeBaron was instructed to bring her son, Declan, to a local Dollar Tree store in Philadelphia.
19:18What's your name?
19:19Declan.
19:19I'm Zach.
19:20How old are you?
19:21I'm 8.
19:22What's your dream?
19:23Probably going to an Eagles game.
19:24You've never been to a football game?
19:26No.
19:26The young Eagles superfan was given an unexpected choice.
19:31$1,000 cash or a mystery Eagles mascot.
19:35Close your eyes and on the count of three say fly Eagles fly.
19:39One, two, three.
19:41Fly Eagles fly.
19:44Those are tickets you're going to the game, man.
19:46Oh, yeah.
19:47And not just any game, the NFC Championship.
19:50And he was also given the $1,000.
19:52But what Declan did next was the biggest surprise to everyone.
19:58Everything's great.
19:59Declan started handing out the money to fellow shoppers.
20:06Declan, let me ask you something.
20:08When they gave you the $1,000 that you decided to give away to all those strangers, why?
20:14It makes, my teacher was just, my teacher, Ms. McNamee, was just teaching about paying it forward
20:19and it also makes me feel good.
20:21A big gesture from someone who's faced more challenges in eight years than most face in
20:26a lifetime, battling a rare form of juvenile arthritis.
20:30This is only juvenile arthritis.
20:32It's like when you're using that.
20:34Were you there in the hospital?
20:3717 times.
20:3917 hospitalizations, countless treatments.
20:43Through it all, his dream remained the same to someday see his Eagles play.
20:48And at the NFC Championship, that dream came true.
20:54Two magical hours on the field before kickoff.
20:57Gave gloves from Isaiah Rogers.
20:59Meeting his heroes one by one.
21:01A blown kiss from Bradley Cooper.
21:04And finally, watching his team score 55 points from seats he thought he'd never see.
21:11For a boy who spent so much time in hospital rooms, it was, as he told his mom, the best day of his life.
21:21And to remind her that sometimes the best choice isn't about what you get, it's about what you can get.
21:27Thanks so much, Jenna, and all our friends at the Today Show for bringing us such a great story.
21:40And guess what?
21:41Declan will get to see the Eagles play in the Super Bowl in person along with his family,
21:47thanks to the NFL, who provided the tickets,
21:49and New Orleans and Company, who provided transportation and accommodations.
21:54That's pretty awesome.
21:56Well, that is going to do it for us parents.
21:58Just a reminder, if your child has a good body,
22:00remember to take care of yourself and each other.
22:03So long.
22:03Let's go.
22:04Let's go.
22:05Let's go.
22:06Let's go.
22:07Let's go.
22:08Let's go.
22:09Let's go.
22:10Let's go.
22:11Let's go.
22:12Let's go.
22:13Let's go.
22:14Let's go.
22:15Let's go.
22:16Let's go.
22:17Let's go.
22:18Let's go.
22:19Let's go.
22:20Let's go.
22:21Let's go.
22:22Let's go.
22:23Let's go.
22:24Let's go.
22:25Let's go.
22:26Let's go.
22:27Let's go.
22:28Let's go.
22:29Let's go.
22:30Let's go.
22:31Let's go.
22:32It's going to do it.
