00:11You know those stories about karma?
00:13How people will do bad things and then horrible stuff happens to them as a result?
00:18Baloney!
00:19I don't believe it for a second.
00:21Why?
00:22Because I try my hardest to be a good person.
00:24And I'm still riddled with bad luck.
00:27Take one day my freshman year, for example.
00:30My alarm didn't go off, so I overslept and was late for school.
00:34As I pedaled frantically on my bike, my backpack unzipped itself and all my books and papers flew out.
00:40I had to stop and pick them up.
00:42When I had finally gathered up all my things, I tried to get back on my bike, but my skirt was stuck in the chain.
00:49I tried to wrench it loose and ended up ripping it.
00:53Ugh!
00:54I was closer to school than home at that point, so I decided to just change into my gym shorts when I arrived.
00:59I got on my bike and pedaled as hard as I could.
01:03I was so late.
01:04All of a sudden, I felt a bump and heard a popping noise.
01:08Then my back tires started to sink.
01:10No!
01:11Anything but this!
01:13I had run over a nail and got a flat tire.
01:16Dejectedly, I walked my bike all the way to school.
01:20I was more annoyed than angry at that point.
01:23When I finally arrived, I grabbed a tardy slip from the office, quickly changed into my shorts in the locker room, and went to my first period class, which I had almost missed entirely.
01:34Could this day get any worse?
01:36Evidently, it could.
01:38I had a big assignment due for a second period.
01:40It was something I worked all weekend on.
01:43But when I went to grab it from my backpack, it was missing.
01:47I must have missed picking it up when my backpack exploded on the ride over.
01:51What did I do to deserve this?
01:53I felt like I might cry, but since that wouldn't help solve my problem, and would only serve to embarrass me, I held back the tears.
02:02Instead, I went to my teacher and explained the problem.
02:06I'm afraid I'll have to dock points for tardiness.
02:09Yes, ma'am.
02:10I trudged back to my desk.
02:12The rest of class seemed to pass by in slow motion.
02:16I sighed in relief when it was finally over.
02:19As I headed back to my locker, I heard some girls whispering from behind me.
02:24Wow, what a fashion statement.
02:26Think those shorts were on sale at Walmart?
02:28Do you think she'll be trying out for the next top model?
02:31They giggled and walked by me.
02:33I felt my face getting red.
02:35I knew what a disaster my outfit was, but it was out of my control.
02:39A girl from my class, Becca, stopped by me and put a hand on my shoulder.
02:44Hey, don't listen to them, Leah.
02:46Personally, I like the outfit you've got.
02:49It's pretty bold to pair red athletic shorts with a lime green blouse.
02:53She winked at me to let me know she was joking.
02:55Thanks, but it wasn't intentional.
02:57My skirt got ripped on the bike ride to school.
03:00Oh, why didn't you say so?
03:02I always have a sewing kit on hand.
03:04Give it to me and I'll have it back to you by lunch.
03:07Thanks, Becca.
03:08Don't mention it.
03:09I have to admit, the good thing about having rotten luck is that you find out who the nicest people are.
03:14I smiled to myself and managed to make it to lunchtime.
03:18I didn't see Becca in the cafeteria, so I decided to grab a bite and save a spot for her.
03:22I passed through the lunch line and got a salad.
03:25As I was walking to an empty table, I slipped on a banana peel.
03:30I wasn't aware people could actually do that.
03:32I thought that was only in cartoons.
03:34I fell down, my food spilling all over my shirt.
03:38Great.
03:39Not only was I publicly humiliated, but even if I got my skirt back, my blouse was still ruined.
03:45You okay?
03:46Becca helped me up and we sat down together.
03:49Here's your skirt.
03:51I tried to fix it up as best as I could.
03:53The stitching on the rip is slightly visible, but I tried to hide it as much as possible.
03:58I really appreciate it.
03:59Not a problem.
04:00I needed something to do in study hall anyway.
04:03I sighed.
04:04Becca looked at me in sympathy.
04:06Tough day, huh?
04:07I pointed to my ruined blouse.
04:10Well, at this point, it really couldn't get any worse.
04:13But this is just par for the course for me.
04:16What do you mean?
04:17Oh, I've always just had bad luck.
04:20You'd better watch out.
04:21It might be contagious.
04:23Aw, you don't really believe that, do you?
04:25I shrugged and put my head on the table.
04:28It was quiet for a while.
04:30Then Becca nudged my arm.
04:31I saw you dropped your lunch.
04:33Would you like some of my food?
04:35My stomach growled as a response.
04:37Becca and I locked eyes and then started to giggle.
04:41We finished eating just as the bell rang.
04:43I was feeling a little better about life after that.
04:46Maybe this day was salvageable after all.
04:48The rest of the afternoon passed by without anything major happening.
04:52I did get hit in the face during dodgeball, but that wasn't necessarily bad luck.
04:57I just lacked any coordination or athleticism.
05:00When school was over, I gathered up my things and was ready to head out.
05:04That was when I remembered that I'd have to walk my bike all the way back home.
05:09Oh well, at least the day was almost over.
05:12I trudged to the bike rack and fumbled with the lock.
05:15Suddenly, I heard a car honk behind me.
05:18Leah, do you need a ride?
05:20I do.
05:21You're a lifesaver.
05:22Put your bike in the trunk and let's go then.
05:25Man, am I lucky to have a friend like you.
05:27Becca laughed.
05:29Well, I guess there's the answer to your question.
05:31What?
05:32You were afraid that you're cursed with bad luck, right?
05:35But you just said you're lucky to have me as a friend.
05:38So that proves that what you said isn't true.
05:41I paused, thinking about my day.
05:43Hey, I guess you're right.
05:45Of course I am.
05:47Now hurry up.
05:48Maybe we can get some ice cream before I drop you off.
05:50I happily jumped into the passenger seat and off we drove.
05:54And that was how my best worst day came to a close.
05:58And that was just one example of a typical day in my life.
06:01I found ways to be grateful, even when my days were ridiculous.
06:05You would think that incident would have been the worst of my misadventures, but no.
06:10When senior year finally came around, I was all set to graduate.
06:15But the day of the ceremony, my cap and gown got misplaced.
06:18I had to be the only one who walked up on stage without them.
06:22On top of that, one of my heels broke when I was walking down the stairs of the stage.
06:27Thankfully, I caught myself on the railing.
06:30Years of bad luck had prepared me for such occasions.
06:33When I got back to my seat, I looked down at my diploma.
06:36I bit back a curse as I realized they had spelled my name wrong.
06:41The whole ceremony had been a bust.
06:43But I was still looking forward to my graduation party afterwards.
06:47I had invited all of my friends, and my parents had ordered a bunch of food and set up games and a photo booth.
06:53I was really looking forward to it.
06:55It was supposed to be at the park, but then a thunderstorm came out of nowhere.
07:00We tried to salvage what we could and moved the party inside to the local community hall.
07:05But we had to share the space with a group that was having a retirement party.
07:09That was when my dad got a phone call from the catering service we were using.
07:13They wouldn't be able to deliver our food due to the bad weather.
07:16I was so disappointed and couldn't hide my feelings.
07:20My mom tried to cheer me up. She set up a few games and tried to keep the party going.
07:25But soon, the storm knocked out the power, and we were sitting in the dark.
07:29I thought the day was ruined.
07:32But then, one of the guys from the retirement party found a bunch of candles.
07:36Our two groups joined together and played mafia, told scary stories, and waited out the thunderstorm.
07:42I have to admit, it was kind of fun.
07:45Though my graduation day didn't turn out like I expected, I was bound and determined to view it in a positive light.
07:52I kept that feeling going right up until I left for college.
07:55No matter what, I was going to make those coming years the best of my life
08:00and shake off that nasty bad luck that had plagued my childhood.
08:04My dorm room was okay, just a little small.
08:08And I had a nice roommate.
08:10We didn't really see much of each other because our schedules were so different, but I didn't mind.
08:14I figured I'd make a bunch of friends in my classes and in the clubs I planned to join.
08:19I was about halfway through the first semester, before my bad luck returned with a vengeance.
08:24It was a particularly cold day, and I decided to grab some coffee before my next class.
08:29There was a really long line, so I knew I'd be cutting it close, but I was so tired that I didn't care.
08:36When I finally got my drink, I rushed to class, but I wasn't paying attention to where I was going and tripped.
08:43I crashed into another person, spilling my drink all over the both of us.
08:47Thankfully, it wasn't piping hot or we both might have gotten burned.
08:51Oh my gosh, I am so sorry.
08:53No big deal. I wasn't fond of this shirt anyway.
08:56I can pay for the dry cleaning bill.
08:59I swear, it's fine. Are you okay?
09:02Yeah, just embarrassed.
09:04I tried to walk around him so he wouldn't notice how red my face was, but when I took a step, my ankle throbbed in pain.
09:12I fell back and the guy caught me.
09:14Looks like you hurt your foot. Let me take a look. I'm studying to be a nurse.
09:18I sat down on a nearby bench and let him inspect my ankle. I grew more and more anxious as I realized that I probably would have to skip my class. I hoped I wouldn't miss anything important.
09:29It seems to be a light spring. If you want, I can drive you to the nearest doctor.
09:33He was so earnest and concerned that I momentarily forgot about how horribly my day was going. And for the first time, I noticed how cute this guy was. I think I'm just gonna get some ice for it.
09:45He unleashed his smile on me and I felt my heart melt.
09:49Okay, stay here and I'll get some for you.
09:52He did just that. And we ended up sitting next to each other and talking for the next half hour. So, what's your name?
09:59Sammy.
10:00Thank you for all your help today, Sammy. I'm Leah.
10:04It was my pleasure. Honestly, it was nice to be able to use what I've learned to help someone.
10:10He fidgeted for a bit, then gave me a nervous smile.
10:13Would it be okay if I got your number?
10:17Sure. If my ankle hadn't hurt so much, I would have jumped for joy.
10:22After a while, I was feeling better. So, I decided to head back to my dorm for the rest of the day.
10:28Sammy instructed me to elevate my leg and promised to text me later and check up on me.
10:32I spent the evening giddily awaiting his text. And then, I realized something.
10:38Becca was right all those years ago. I wasn't cursed with bad luck. I was blessed by it.
10:44If all these things didn't happen to me, I never would have had the experiences I did or met the people I know.
10:50My phone chimed. It was a message from Sammy.
10:53How are you feeling?
10:55I hesitated, then texted him back. Pretty lucky.
11:02How am I doing?
11:04Can't wait to hear it.
11:07You see.
11:08There's a message.
11:09He's been so happy.
