00:00Dubai, the most luxurious place in the world.
00:06Just 50 years ago, Dubai was merely a small town in the middle of the desert.
00:11Today, Dubai serves as the luxurious face of the Middle East, and the biggest attraction
00:17that part of the world has to offer.
00:19Undoubtedly, you've seen photos of the Burj Al Arab Hotel, the crescent-shaped skyscraper
00:25built on a man-made island.
00:28You also probably know that Dubai is home to the world's tallest building, and you might
00:33have even seen Tom Cruise scaling it in an installment of the Mission Impossible franchise.
00:39That building is called the Burj Khalifa, and it stands 2,722 feet high.
00:46Yes, I'm sure you know a bit about the attractions of this amazing city, but today I'd love to
00:52get the chance to tell you so much more.
00:55So, here's all the over-the-top, wildly expensive things you can find in Dubai.
01:01But first, a tiny history lesson.
01:04How did Dubai go from being just a small desert town to the extravagant oasis it is today?
01:11The same way all of the other United Arab Emirates cities became so rich?
01:16Abu Dhabi, just 90 miles from Dubai, is the richest city in the world, and it sits on 10%
01:24of the entire world's oil supply.
01:27This production of oil launched the United Arab Emirates into the first world.
01:32Millions were poured into Dubai, and it became one of the biggest cities in the Middle East.
01:37However, today, Dubai only makes 5% of its revenue from oil.
01:43Because its reserves aren't nearly as lucrative as some of its UAE neighbors, Dubai makes the
01:49majority of its revenue from trade, real estate, and tourism.
01:54Dubai has become the business center of the UAE since it can no longer rely on oil production
01:59alone.
02:01But this adjustment has not discouraged this incredibly rich city from growing.
02:06Dubai is growing in population just as much as it's growing vertically.
02:10In fact, about one-fourth of all cranes are located in Dubai.
02:15That's right, about 25% of cranes in existence are in just one UAE city.
02:22It seems the gameplan of Dubai is just to keep building skyscrapers.
02:27Two of these skyscrapers are the aforementioned Burj Khalifa and the Burj Al Arab Hotel.
02:33The Burj Khalifa stands more than a half a mile tall.
02:37It's so tall, in fact, that at its upper floors, the building can sway several feet at the mercy
02:43of the wind.
02:45This, however, was not overlooked by the architects of this massive building.
02:49The Burj Khalifa was designed in such a way that the sway would be too slow for the vestibular
02:54system in the inner ear to even notice.
02:58That's the part of the ear that provides balance if you happen to be unburdened by interference.
03:03The Burj Al Arab is a beautiful five-star hotel just hundreds of feet off the land.
03:09The Al Arab is the fifth largest hotel in the world, thanks to its unique shape.
03:15The hotel stands 56 stories high.
03:18It is officially labeled as a five-star hotel, but some have dubbed this stunning building
03:23with the highest remark of seven stars.
03:27This seven-star label is up for debate, as the authority on the matter of luxury hotels
03:32has not been agreed upon.
03:34But seven-star or not, this hotel is truly magnificent.
03:39If you want to spend a night in the royal suite at the Al Arab, it'll cost you just over $24,000.
03:46The interior of the Burj Al Arab is adorned with around 1,790 square meters of 24-karat gold
03:54leaf.
03:55But even that can touch the glorious views of the immaculate city and the picture-perfect
04:01gulf.
04:02Along with extremely tall buildings, the city is keen on building man-made islands.
04:09Both the Palm Islands and the World Islands are two incredibly ambitious projects that
04:14came to fruition with the help of a whole lot of cash.
04:19The construction of the Palm Islands not only cost $12 billion to build, but it also required
04:2494 million cubic meters of sand.
04:28To put that into perspective, 94 million cubic meters of sand could fill the entire Empire
04:34State Building two and a half times.
04:37The World Islands, as in the man-made islands that mimic the shape of the world's land masses,
04:43took 321 million cubic meters of sand.
04:47Theodore, if you could just edit in nine Empire State Buildings.
04:51Which also adds another $15 billion to the cost of man-made islands in Dubai.
04:57I'm not much of a big fan of sand in the first place, as it's rough, coarse, and it gets everywhere.
05:03Nevertheless, I did enjoy my time at the Palm Island.
05:07Like I've always said, nothing exfoliates quite like the warm water of the Persian Gulf.
05:13But that's enough talk about man-made islands, huh?
05:15Let's move on to the police force.
05:18Now, law enforcement isn't usually something that comes to mind when speaking in terms of luxury.
05:24But it sure is in Dubai.
05:26As a means of wooing the tourists, Dubai's police force uses supercars as their patrol vehicles.
05:33This includes cars such as the Ferrari FF, that goes for around half a million dollars.
05:39The Lamborghini Aventador, that goes for around $400,000.
05:44And my personal favorite, an Aston Martin 177, for the reasonable price of $1.79 million.
05:53Trust me when I say this, nothing makes a man feel more like James Bond than flooring an Aston Martin 177.
06:00Ooh, makes me want to take mine out for a spin right now.
06:04Anyway, using these spectacular cars is just Dubai being Dubai.
06:09But hey, Dubai is the 8th safest city in the world, so more power to them.
06:15This isn't all due to the supercars, of course.
06:18The UAE, in general, has rather strict laws.
06:22Due to the Islamic constitutional monarchies that operate the Emirates government, some Sharia laws exist in Dubai as well.
06:29So if you're on vacation with your missus, checking out the bougie police force, make sure the two of you don't get caught smooching, because it might just get you deported.
06:38However, due to the extremely high amount of tourism, some places in Dubai are much more lenient.
06:44The serving of alcohol, for instance, would not be permitted in a traditional Middle Eastern setting.
06:50But it is in Dubai, in specific institutions such as hotels and clubs.
06:56It is actually estimated that around 15% of Dubai's population are Emiratis, while the other 85% are from out of town.
07:06About half of the population is composed of the workers, building hundreds of skyscrapers, which does make a little bit of sense considering the whole crane situation.
07:15Most of these workers are from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, which brings us to the more unfortunate side of Dubai.
07:23The class divide is quite big. Many of the immigrant workers live and work in less than ideal conditions, while Emiratis and the upper class foreigners earn extremely attractive salaries.
07:36There really isn't much of a middle ground between the class divide in Dubai.
07:40But just like any country divided, there's always a sport to bring the people together.
07:46Well, that's the idea anyway.
07:49And in this case, this sport is camel racing.
07:54It's a bit of a sore subject for me, considering back in 96 I lost about 500,000 in a camel race to some sheik and shajah.
08:02But that was a different time.
08:04Camel racing in Dubai is almost equivalent to American football in the US.
08:09And Dubai's twist on the sport is that instead of children jockeys, they've began to use robots.
08:16You see, camel racing has a bit of a dark past.
08:20It used to be the case that small children would be forced to ride the camels, and that led to human trafficking.
08:26In less progressed areas in the Middle East, it still happens.
08:30But in Dubai, the children have been replaced with robots.
08:34And believe it or not, some of these little bots can cost up to $10,000.
08:39The camel that lost me that 500 grand was steered by a monkey.
08:44Let's just move on from camel racing.
08:46In the future, Dubai has some rather insane plans in the works.
08:51Dubai is planning to build a completely climate-controlled area of the city that spans 4.3 miles.
08:58It was announced when Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, unveiled plans for the Mall of the World.
09:06A 48 million square foot Mall of the World.
09:10This miniature city will have a retractable dome, and will not only serve as a massive pedestrian mall,
09:17but will contain hotels and apartments, along with roads and parks.
09:23The massive structure will more than double the size of Monaco.
09:26The idea starts to make sense when you consider Dubai can reach temperatures of 115 degrees Fahrenheit regularly.
09:33But the idea begins to make less sense again when you consider the cost.
09:38The cost has not yet been determined officially, but estimates have been made in the tens of billions of dollars.
09:45And keep in mind, the price tag would be much higher if the workers were not dreadfully underpaid.
09:51The dome is planned to have 100 hotels and serviced apartments, totaling 20,000 rooms.
09:58It seems an audacious architectural feat we've never known Dubai to aspire for anything less.
10:04Due to the speed at which Dubai has been growing, it never developed a standard address system.
10:10In fact, until 2015, instead of an address line on a mailing label, there was a space where residents could draw a map or write out specific instructions.
10:20Thankfully, they have established 10-digit numbers that serve as addresses, and I'm sure it's a whole lot easier to be a delivery driver in Dubai nowadays.
10:29So, that's Dubai for you.
10:31Oh, and I completely forgot, to top it all off, the mega-rich residents that live in Dubai don't send an ounce of their paycheck to the government.
10:42In Dubai, there is no income tax.
10:46Yet another feature that makes Dubai one of the most attractive places to stay on the planet.
10:51That's all I've got for you today.
10:53If you enjoyed the video, make sure to leave a like and subscribe.
10:56As always, I'm Mr. Luxury.
10:58Pip-pip to doodly-doo.
