China is experiencing the world's largest revival today. Several thousand Chinese come to Christ every day. Many feel that these revivals are happening in contrast to their background of being Buddhists, Animists, Taoists, or Confucianists, but a closer look shows that China has been following after the God of the Bible since the beginning of their history more than 5,000 years ago. Are these current revivals a sign that the people of China are returning to their true roots?

00:00This morning we are going to go and meet with a pastor. He's probably the most famous pastor
00:12in all of China and he's at the very center of the underground house church. Just a really quick
00:23Google search on his name. He is one of the most famous activists of Chinese house churches.
00:30It says he was sentenced in 1976 to seven years in prison for aiding the counter-revolution.
00:36While he was in prison he had a stroke and he has a serious case of diabetes. He's in his 70s now.
00:43This is a pastor who can probably say that he has more people in his church than most countries have.
00:52We have one guy that's supposed to be coming and picking us up this morning to take us
00:59to meet with Zhang. Zhang is still followed by his patrol officers so we're going to be
01:03meeting with him today. Even though it's not that safe.
01:11Hello, what are you doing?
01:13It's all good, we'll wait for you.
01:15Okay, we're ready.
01:19So, this is the guy that's supposed to be coming and picking us up.
01:24He has a relationship with Zhang and so he's able to, you know, take us and meet with him.
01:31I think this is going to be a great day, a pretty exciting day to go and meet with him.
01:38My name is Eugene Bach and I host the Back to Jerusalem podcast.
01:46I live out of my backpack and my office, it's an economy airplane seat.
01:51Why do I travel around the world?
01:53Well, you could say I have a sort of disease.
01:56But I can't sit still when I live in the space between all the bad news and the good news.
02:03I may be just another random guy with a podcast.
02:07But what I am seeing in history and around the world today tells me that our God is not just another God.
02:14And I'm not saved just to be a part of another church program.
02:18I believe God has given us a mission, but often we can't fit it into our schedule or find a place left on our to-do list.
02:27Many of us are left standing in the space between the Great Commission and the not-so-great reality of the church in the world today.
02:35Now, I have a hunch that we already know the answers, but why does much of the church seem stale?
02:42Why are so many prayers powerless?
02:46Who wants a bigger vision?
02:48Who wants a taste of God's amazing promises?
02:51When the rubber hits the road, I have a hunch that revival is what I need.
02:56And likely, I'm not the only one.
03:12The two things that China has no shortage of are people and history.
03:33The Chinese are one of the few cultures on earth that can trace their lineage all the way back to the time of Noah's children.
03:42As we're going into the Temple of Heaven, somebody has taken water from a brush and just written a bunch of characters.
03:51Characters are so important for the Chinese culture.
03:54It's not just a language of communication by visual reading.
03:59It's also a communication of art and feeling.
04:01And there's a lot of history.
04:03In Chinese, for instance, one of the things that I think is really amazing is that the Chinese make a character that looks like this right here, which means people.
04:10And to show that everything that is great, they will use this character right here.
04:16And this represents great, big.
04:19All that is grand.
04:21And then the word for God.
04:23When people talk about God, they often say Tian or like sky.
04:27So there's different words for God.
04:29Shen, there is Zhu, there's also Tian.
04:33And the word for God in Tian is that which is greater than everything that is big.
04:39It is the greatest of all.
04:41God is bigger than everything that is grand on this earth.
04:45Shen.
04:47They have over 50,000 of these characters in their language.
04:50And in some of the Chinese characters, we can actually see the stories of Genesis written right in them.
04:59Spiritually, this is one of the most important places in all of China.
05:05It points back to more than 4,000 years, long before Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, or Communism.
05:13There are so many things that are really significant about doing the sacrifices that the people did here during those days.
05:21Because they look just like the sacrifices that they did.
05:26It's so hard to be inconspicuous in China when number one, you're a foreigner.
05:31Number two, you're meeting with the most notorious ex-convict house church pastor.
05:36And three, you try to film it all in public.
05:40We try to pretend like we were just tourists visiting a historical spot and ask Pastor Zhang to give us an introduction to the background.
05:48This is the largest altar for sacrifice in the world.
06:10This is the largest altar for sacrifice in the world.
06:14It was dedicated to Shangdi, which sounds exactly like the Hebrew word for Shaddai.
06:20The similarities to the Old Testament worship are undeniable.
06:25Unlike every other temple in all of Asia, this temple was made according to the second commandment God gave to Moses, to make no graven image, only a name.
06:39Now we're teaching our many of the Heat.
06:46China is a cultural witness to him.
06:49China has been the culture of the Almighty.
06:52So the Almighty should maintain your own order of this place.
06:55So, the Almighty should be dominated in the world.
06:57Zhang is a natural-born preacher.
06:58And before he breaks out into a sermon,
07:01we thought it would be better to find somewhere a little more private.
07:05it. Even though it feels like we're alone, Pastor Zhang is continually looking over his
07:11shoulder, making sure no one else is listening.
07:35He was sound basic apresent.
07:44Still, we didn't have to worry about Christopher了.
07:47During the throwaway show, we prayed for another team.
07:51We didn't go away with this opportunity for a family.
07:57I don't have any嘉 here because I didn't want a Irish familye to go to the girls with eyes.
08:01I woke up too PKM.
08:05a little bit, a little bit, a little bit, a little bit, a little bit, a little bit.
08:08It was in such a way of learning.
08:10The society was that this is the one on the team's first place.
08:15The government department said,
08:19I said, you should basically build a team in a team,
08:22my team is you're the government to build my team.
08:25They were saying, you're a good guy, we're going to build a team.
08:28I said, yes, you're trying to keep your team in a team,
08:32We are so fast.
08:34What's the time you don't get caught?
08:37We are so fast.
08:39I said,
08:40I said,
08:41I said,
08:42I'm going to help you.
08:44Ha ha ha.
08:45It's a great day.
08:46It's a great day.
08:48I said,
08:49I came back to the United States.
08:53I said,
08:53I said,
08:55I said,
08:55I said,
08:56I said,
08:57I said,
08:57I said,
08:59I said,
09:00I said,
09:01I said,
09:01So, this is the church I said, who is who taught me? I said no, cause I wasn't sure. Why did I not?
09:07The church is leading us to the church.
09:10In 1986, I was involved in there first.
09:14In 1980, in 1995,
09:17This town was just there a lot of教会, and many信徒.
09:22In this town, there was a huge wedding group in China.
09:27So, to now,
09:29Pastor Zhang is truly a living legend.
09:53To me, he's like the father of the Chinese underground house church,
09:57and he was there from the very beginning of revival.
10:27One of the unique characteristics of the revival inside of China is that the majority of ministers are women, like Sister Han.
10:38She loves to go Patrick's job mowed, and She told her to go 带 her毋 weakli, She would so wichtig
10:43having food, and have food, and have a wipes.
10:45To help withBN, if you live inßer君, don't go there.
10:48I must live under the colonel.
10:49It's not the way to go, I say it's not the way to go, it's not the way to go.
10:54He always goes to where to go, and to give a group of friends to open a会.
10:59We have to go to the hospital, and we can go to the hospital for 10 days.
11:05We will go to the hospital.
11:08We will go to the hospital.
11:10We will go to the hospital.
11:13We will go to the hospital.
11:14Hello!
12:36Women are continually being used by God to fuel this revival
12:42Special women like Xiaomi
13:03小明 is the voice of the house church
13:07The Chinese don't sing western hymns or translated praise songs
13:12They sing their own songs born from persecution and trial
13:17This whole entire song book is made of songs
13:21That the Holy Spirit gave to a Chinese peasant group
13:24Pastor Zhang said that his hometown is like Nazareth
13:39And what good could ever come out of Nazareth?
13:43But this seemingly insignificant rural farming community
13:48Was the epicenter for revival
13:51And if you walk up to any house in the countryside here
13:55You'll see red on all of the doorposts like the Jews at Passover
14:00And crosses are on every home
14:06And just down the road from Fangchang
14:08Another network was born
14:10China Gospel Fellowship
14:13Even though it was born in the same countryside
14:16They brought revival into the cities
14:21Halleluia
14:23Halleluia
14:25Halleluia
14:25Amen
14:26Amen
14:26Amen
14:27Amen
14:27Amen
14:27Amen
14:27But what's it like to lead a fellowship of 10 million believers?
14:41Pastor Shen started this church when he was just a teenager
14:45And I thinkering
14:45Andал Hip
14:50That's my soul
14:52водfolk
14:53My
14:53My mother
14:54God
14:55Salew
14:55Kirito
14:56My father
14:57He wasdev
14:57My mother
14:58My father
14:58Amen
14:59Perk
14:59ł
15:13esse
15:55Does that mean that the church
15:57So I asked after years of revival
15:59does the church in China
16:01risk growing stagnant
16:25China is changing at incredible speeds
16:47But the question is
16:49will the church survive?
16:52Let's look at the first Christian missionaries
16:54that brought the gospel to China
16:56They had an amazing influence in their day
16:59traveling along the ancient Silk Road
17:01This is the beginning of the Silk Road
17:04that gave China its first taste of the good news
17:08If you look at Shanghai
17:22one of the more popular cities inside of China
17:25they'll say that the history goes back
17:26several hundred years
17:28Beijing
17:29history goes back a thousand years
17:31but in this city
17:32history goes back more than three thousand years
17:33This is the oldest city of China
17:35kind of
17:36we're in the basin of the Yellow River
17:38and the Yellow River is the birth of the Chinese people
17:40This is where Christianity got its foothold
17:43about a thousand six hundred years ago
17:45At the very top here we can see a cross
17:49It was a typical Eastern Orthodox cross
17:52There's nothing special about it
17:54It's kind of tucked away in the back of this park here in Xi'an
17:57The missionaries that came here
18:00they began to make relations already with the emperor
18:04and that's what this text supposedly says
18:08The oldest recording of Christianity in China
18:11It's the history of the Iranian missionaries
18:14that came from the Persian Empire
18:16They actually didn't call themselves Christians
18:18In Chinese they're referred to as the religion of the light
18:21And so the Nestorian missionaries were actually
18:24really well known for doing cross-cultural ministry
18:27They were also well known for speaking both Persian and Chinese language
18:32So we're finding a little bit of a challenge getting to this location
18:48I mean even the locals are having a hard time telling us how to get there
18:51This place you can find it on Google
18:55But yet it feels like we're coming to a location
18:58that very few people in the world have ever been to
19:01And I'm surprised that our taxi driver is willing to brave this road
19:08It might not look like a typical church building
19:17But the original Nestorian missionaries from Iran
19:20made it in a style of the Chinese structures of the day
19:23This is the Daxing Temple
19:25This has been argued to be the oldest church in all of China
19:30But the oldest remaining church in China was taken over by the Buddhists
19:34More than most Buddhist temples
19:38This has a very strong feeling of its Hindu origins
19:42Here
19:46But one of the things that does identify this as being an early Christian church
19:50Is this stone
19:52They call it the Nestorian steel
19:54That is one of the main pieces that makes the argument
19:58For this being the oldest church in China
20:00Representing the very first missionaries that came here
20:03They were able to see churches all over China during their time here
20:07However, they all disappeared
20:09Once the Mongolians converted to Islam
20:12That affected all of the areas that they were able to conquer
20:16Including right here in China
20:18This is pretty stinkin' cool
20:22So the traditional kind of Nestorian looking cross
20:31And then just lined up behind it
20:33Up on the mountain is the Daxing Temple
20:35And they had monasteries all over as well as Bible schools
20:38And the Christians became quite densely populated
20:41That was before they died out towards the end of the Tang Dynasty
20:46It's sad to see that what was once established here died out
20:51You know, it may be sad to see good work come to an end
20:55But God is always working despite our success or failures
21:01And Christianity is not a Western religion
21:06It is a Westward religion
21:10I am coming to you live on delay from somewhere within the borders of China
21:16Here we are listening to a pastor of the underground church in China
21:21On the front lines who is able to share information that is like gold
21:26I know that he has been working in Western China
21:28How are those projects going in Western China?
21:31We are doing a work in the West in the West
21:33We are doing a work in the West in the West
21:35We have been working in the West in the West
21:36We have built a church in the West
21:38They have been building a church
21:40They are also developing the growing of the population
21:42And the churches in the West
21:44In the West, the leaders of the Jews
21:46We are bringing them to the house
21:48And they are like friends
21:50They can share Jesus with the people
21:52And now they can share Jesus with the Holy Spirit
21:54And also give them the Holy Spirit
21:55They can share Jesus with their children
22:22And yes I even have the ability to save their lives
22:25to sleep in the middle of doing a podcast. God bless you. Little Joe is working in Western China
22:32because his church also shares a vision that they call back to Jerusalem. This takes us back to the
22:40beginning. This vision that God gave to his disciples in Acts chapter one, he is now giving
22:47it to the Chinese. This is nothing new. You could say that it's the great commission with Kung Pao
22:53flavor. In the early 1900s, Chinese Christians received this vision to take the gospel to the
23:01nations in between China and Jerusalem. One of the earliest groups to receive this vision of
23:08back to Jerusalem was called the back to Jerusalem traveling ban. And amazingly, I got to meet with
23:16one of the original missionaries.
23:18If I would like to gospel praise.
23:20That means, when I my blessing was over, I would back to his disciples.
23:21If I would like to pray after that, when I would like to pray, I would like to pray
23:23after another. And then again, when I would like to pray for the Lord, I would like to
23:26go back to Jerusalem. And I would like to pray to the Lord. When the Holy Spirit is
23:31there. God bless me. You are all. We are all on the earth to God. You are all friends.
23:33God bless me. God bless you. God bless me. God bless you today. I hope to pray for Christ.
23:37And Jesus will follow me all day long after I have Him. God bless you. God bless you. God bless you.
23:40I owe my sins, and I owe my sins.
23:42The Lord has led me to say goodbye.
23:46I never say goodbye, I never made a goodbye.
23:49I was so happy to say goodbye.
23:52I owe my sins.
23:53I owe my sins.
23:55I gave my sins to that day.
23:57I gave my work to say goodbye to that.
24:00I gave my sins and I gave them to that I was a rich man.
24:05So I gave them my sins.
24:07I gave them my sins.
24:10When I was growing up, no matter where to go, what to do, I believe that you guide me, I want to give you a gift for you.
24:17I'm happy and happy and happy.
24:20Think about this.
24:40The Chinese have about 1.3 to 1.5 billion people.
24:45That means if 1 billion people up and left Earth and went to Mars, they would still have more people than any other country on Earth except for India.
24:55With this many people experiencing the world's largest revival, imagine what they could do if they only send a small fraction of those people out into the mission field between China and Jerusalem.
25:15The Chinese are about 2.5 billion people.
25:20Every single child and every single child.
25:23Every country in the world.
25:26This is the Christian of the earth.
25:28The Chinese is the Christian of the world.
25:32This is the Christian of the world for the people.
25:35This is the Christian of the world for the people.
25:38So now we are in training, preparing, preparing
25:43But there are a lot of people who have already reached the Al-Qua
25:48They are now in宣教
25:50It is a goal to encourage, to promote, to train, to practice
26:01We believe that we will enter the network in China.
26:10We are the people that menipped together.
26:14Those are the two people that were from governments.
26:18We are still at the same time.
