00:00It's the 13th of July in Butler, Pennsylvania.
00:06Former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks at a rally.
00:09It's only days until he plans to accept the official Republican nomination.
00:13He's just minutes into his speech when shots are fired.
00:17Take a look at what happened.
00:25Trump got hit, but survived.
00:30Someone tried to assassinate him in broad daylight.
00:34Here is how it unfolded.
00:44By the time this video is published, new details might have emerged.
00:51It's a hot, sweltering early evening, as tens of thousands gather here to see Trump.
00:56Pennsylvania is one of six vital swing states that will help secure the win in the next presidential election.
01:03Butler skews heavily Republican, and it is a blue-collar town.
01:07U.S.! U.S.! U.S.!
01:10This is a big crowd.
01:12This is a big, big, beautiful crowd.
01:15He is surrounded by supporters.
01:18Most are sitting or standing in front of the stage.
01:21Some sit on the bleachers, center, left, and right.
01:24Trump's support staff and security, including Secret Service agents, are right at the stage.
01:29Behind him are three large buildings.
01:33On the roof of the building on the far left and on the far right are Secret Service snipers.
01:37They are constantly scanning the surroundings, looking for threats.
01:41They can be seen in this video filmed by a crowd member.
01:47Hello, Butler, and hello to Pennsylvania.
01:50I'm thrilled to be back.
01:51Trump begins with his speech.
01:53Things seem normal.
01:54He turns to the right and points at a chart showing statistics on border crossings.
01:59At the same time, several people in the crowd notice a man with a gun on the roof of a building close by.
02:05He's got a gun!
02:09It's too late.
02:10Take a look at what happened.
02:12All of a sudden, bullets start flying.
02:14One even gets captured on camera.
02:18Another building, about 400 feet or 120 meters north of the stage.
02:22The shots are coming from here.
02:24The gunman is 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.
02:29He is armed with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.
02:33The gun was legally purchased by his father.
02:35First, he apparently fires a round of three shots.
02:38Take a look at what happened.
02:42Trump reaches up with his hand.
02:44The first bullet pierces the upper part of his right ear.
02:47He will later say that turning over to the right at that exact moment
02:50prevented the bullet from hitting him right in the head.
02:52He ducks down behind the podium, and within three to four seconds after the first shot,
02:57Secret Service agents swarm the former president and shield him with their bodies.
03:01Crooks opens fire again, immediately, with five more shots.
03:05Right before the first shot by Crooks, one of the snipers on the left roof behind Trump
03:12seems to detect the gunman and prepares to return fire.
03:16Take a look at what happened.
03:18Some outlets report that these snipers killed Crooks,
03:22while the Secret Service confirmed its personnel neutralized the shooter.
03:24We could not corroborate that it was in fact these specific agents.
03:28The gunman also hit spectators on the bleachers.
03:31One man died, 50-year-old Cory Comprador.
03:34Two others were critically injured.
03:36With Trump's microphone still on, we can hear the tense exchanges among the agents.
03:40Move the spear! Hold, hold. When you're ready, on to you!
03:44Ready?
03:44Move!
03:45Up!
03:45Move!
03:46Go!
03:46About 42 seconds after Crooks opened fire, they confirm the shooter is down.
03:52Shooter's down.
03:54Are we good?
03:55Shooter's down.
03:56Shooter's down.
03:57Are we good to move?
03:58Are we good to move?
03:59Are we clear?
03:59We're clear!
04:00We're clear!
04:01We're clear!
04:02They prepare to escort him to an armored vehicle.
04:04Come on, sir. Come on.
04:06Let me get my shoes.
04:06Let me get my shoes.
04:08Nice, sir. I got you, sir.
04:09Let me get my shoes.
04:10Hold on, when your head is bloody.
04:12Sir, we gotta move too close.
04:13Move too close.
04:14Let me get my shoes.
04:15Okay, my shoes are down.
04:17Come on, my shoes.
04:18Watch out.
04:20Wait, wait, wait, wait, sir.
04:21In about 75 seconds after ducking to the ground, Trump raises his fist.
04:26He is mouthing the words, fight, fight, fight.
04:29The resulting photos immediately travel around the entire world.
04:36The crowd starts to chant for the former president as he leaves the stage, bleeding.
04:40USA! USA! USA!
04:42Trump is then rushed to a hospital.
04:45Later that night, he is flown to New Jersey.
04:47He appears to be well.
04:48There are a lot of questions we don't have an answer to right now.
04:57Why were the forces unable to prevent the attack?
05:00Analysis on X suggests that at least the snipers on the roof behind Trump were likely scouting
05:05for dangers further away, with this rooftop possibly falling into the responsibility of other law
05:10enforcement agents.
05:11We were unable to corroborate that.
05:14Why couldn't armed men climb up on this building?
05:17What was Crooks' motive?
05:18The gunman had no criminal history in Pennsylvania's public court records.
05:22The New York Times found a voter registration record for Crooks.
05:25It shows that he was registered as a Republican.
05:27They also found that he donated $15 to a liberal voter turnout group through a Democratic donation
05:32platform in 2021.
05:34He was a kitchen worker and had a membership at a local shooting club.
05:38The FBI found suspicious devices in both his car and home.
05:41They are being evaluated by the agency at the time of this recording.
05:45The investigation is ongoing and new information is being published by the minute.
05:49President Biden and various leaders around the world condemn the attack and political
05:53violence at large.
05:55The picture of Trump, bloodied but defiant, with a raised fist in front of the American
05:59flag, will surely become a powerful symbol in his re-election campaign.
06:03President Biden and his re-election campaign.
