00:00Elon Musk is leaving Trump's government.
00:03The tech billionaire announced his departure from the White House and the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, on social media.
00:09He wrote on X,
00:10He went on to say that DOGE will continue without him, and its mission will only strengthen over time.
00:23Since the November election, Musk has led a tumultuous efficiency drive to shrink the size of the U.S. government.
00:30Thousands of federal jobs were axed, but the Tesla owner ultimately failed to deliver generational savings that he'd sought.
00:37Musk's quick and unceremonious exit from the temporary role isn't hugely unexpected,
00:42due to the fact his tenure overlapped with a significant decline in sales at his electric car company.
00:47According to reports, he didn't have a formal conversation with Trump before announcing his departure,
00:52which was decided at a senior staff level.
00:54But it comes a day after Musk criticized the Marquis Tax Bill,
00:58a legislative centerpiece of Trump's agenda,
01:01calling it too expensive and a measure that would undermine his work with DOGE.
01:05The president is yet to comment on Musk's departure.
