00:00there's a lot of turmoil these days in the united states talk about buying canada taking over
00:06greenland or the panama canal and even talk about some states wanting to leave the u.s now that's
00:13nothing new texas has been talking about leaving the united states for years but imagine if it
00:18really happened like minnesota decided to jump ship and change their border 10 miles south of
00:23albert lee because they realized they like cheaper medication and tim hortons more than the 4th of
00:28july and guns would the residents actually be on board with this we did a survey asking 500 people
00:34in each state would they want their state to leave the u.s and join another country if yes would it be
00:40canada japan greenland mexico or an eu country it took a few months to gather 500 replies from each
00:47state but in full disclosure a few states didn't hit that 500 so they were eliminated those states
00:53were alaska louisiana connecticut and west virginia this video is ranked by how many votes to leave
00:59the u.s out of 500 got it get it good let's take a look
01:03number 10 vermont if any state seems culturally aligned with canada it's vermont with its focus
01:15on environmental sustainability progressive politics and a rural lifestyle rooted in community values
01:21vermont already feels like it shares more in common with our northern neighbor than much of
01:26the rest of the u.s it's a place where outdoor recreation maple syrup production and small town
01:31civility aren't just hobbies they're part of the state's identity during the last trump administration
01:36vermont's political climate class sharply with federal policies as the white house rolled back
01:42environmental protections and scaled down health care initiatives vermont was moving in the opposite
01:46direction pushing for single-payer health care expanding renewable energy programs and banning
01:52single-use plastic bags contrast highlighted a deep ideological divide between the state and
01:59washington dc vermonters don't do drama they do flannel hiking and bernie sanders speeches at local
02:05diners if the border opened tomorrow would half the population of vermont pack up their u-hauls and get
02:11their passports ready maybe one of the biggest hurdles though is how do you say ben and jerry's in french
02:16out of the 500 vermont votes 265 said they would join another country of those votes 78 said that
02:24country would be canada
02:25number nine hawaii hawaii has always had a complex relationship with its status as a u.s state long
02:39before statehood in 1959 it was an independent kingdom with its own monarchy government and cultural
02:45identity an identity that many native hawaiians and local residents still hold very close for some the
02:52transition to statehood remains a source of tension and unresolved history washington's policies often run
02:59counter to the values that are central to life in hawaii the state is known for its deep commitment to
03:04environmental stewardship cultural preservation and a strong sense of community rooted in diversity
03:10washington's sometimes policies on climate change immigration native rights and federal land control
03:16are seen by many hawaiians as dismissive then a few years back trump's promotion of the birther conspiracy
03:22targeting barack obama who was born in honolulu only added to the perception that hawaii's unique identity
03:28is frequently misunderstood or disregarded by mainland politics now picture canada polite respectful
03:35environmentally conscious and not obsessed with building border walls it's no wonder many hawaiians
03:40started to think maybe that's the kind of long distance relationship we'd be into hawaii is another
03:45state that's always talked about leaving the u.s not now it's just always been a thing probably since
03:49the day after they got statehood out of the 500 hawaiian votes 281 said they'd be willing to leave the
03:56u.s and 60 percent of those votes said canada would be the place they'd want to go
04:07number eight massachusetts massachusetts has long been known as the birthplace of the american
04:12revolution but during the trump administrations it's increasingly felt like the epicenter for
04:17political resistance the state's identity rooted in higher education progressive values and a scientific
04:23leadership has put it directly at odds with many of the administration policies home to institutions
04:29like harvard and mit and boasting one of the highest concentrations of advanced degrees in the country
04:35massachusetts found itself frequently at odds with federal stances on science public health and
04:41educational funding the handling of the covet 19 pandemic in particular drew widespread frustration across
04:47the state combined with hardline immigration policies and a wave of conservative judicial
04:52appointments the culture and ideological divide grew deeper for many residents the idea of aligning
04:58more closely with canada's political climate hasn't seemed too far-fetched canada with its public
05:04health care and better tuition rates seem like a smarter older sibling and let's face it massachusetts
05:09already kind of talks like canada drop the r add a hockey team and call it a day out of the 500 massachusetts
05:17votes 296 said they would leave the u.s of those 71 chose canada as the destination for massachusetts
05:31number seven arizona wow who saw this one coming while most of these states are gazing towards canada
05:38and their snow-covered maple flavored utopia arizona is peering over the southern border and going hey
05:45maybe we got it backwards during the trump years arizona found itself in a political identity crisis
05:51half red half blue and fully sunburned and 100 tired of being ground zero for immigration wars wall
05:58building and being stereotyped as the land of angry retirees with loose gun laws i mean that's all true
06:05but still arizona has a huge latino population deep cultural ties to mexico and entire cities like
06:11tucson and nogales that feel more connected to the southern neighbors than they do washington dc while
06:17washington struggles with immigration reform and talks about building walls and ice raids a lot of
06:23arizonans live in fear for themselves their family and their friends and it makes sense arizona has a
06:29good-sized border with mexico and most of the residents like we talked about earlier do have latino
06:34heritage they have family over in mexico so it's sort of you know is in line with what's already going on
06:40in the state at least culturally mexico is not perfect but it also wouldn't scream border crisis
06:45every election year now in full disclosure i believe in immigration reform we can't take in
06:50everyone i believe in legal immigration 100 but as we all know that's not what's going on down in the
06:56southern border but i'm also not on board with the entire country fearing they may get caught up in an
07:01ice raid or something so the question is still there why would arizonans want to move there well
07:06obviously it's going to be a big part of what their demographics are and also i mean dual citizenship
07:11beach weekends in baja affordable living why not arizona got 301 votes out of 500 and 65 percent of
07:19those voters said they would choose mexico number six minnesota minnesota's already halfway to canada
07:31in both geography and personality they're polite snow tolerant and love a good casserole but these
07:37days what's going on in minnesota that minnesota nice has turned into minnesota nervous now there's
07:42been a lot of turmoil going on in minnesota for a few years now and it all started off with the
07:48george floyd murder minnesotans who largely value community and decency weren't having what was going
07:54on in the state more and more talk around the water cooler was moving to canada now we all know this is
08:00next to impossible to do but citizens talk about this stuff if you ever do go to canada and then
08:05minnesota you'll learn that these people they're very similar i mean you could say that about wisconsin
08:11too so it only makes sense that you know when things get tough that's what they start talking
08:15about i mean like i said earlier texas does the same thing every couple years but they don't want
08:19to join another country they just want to do their own thing minnesota got 317 votes to move out of 500
08:25with 83 of those voters saying they would go to canada if they could move their state
08:34number five illinois while most states are dreaming of canadian kindness and fantasizing about mexico's
08:40tamales and tequila illinois particularly chicago is over here saying we're done with this continent
08:46entirely we'd like to apply for eu membership please yeah no kidding they they chose eu the fact is i
08:53i kind of put eu in there as a joke along with greenland i don't think anyone would really select
08:57either of those over the years parts of illinois have fallen into a dystopian prequel to the purge
09:03this has been another target of different political parties they like to point out that they have the
09:08most murders anywhere in the world and all this other stuff the reality is when you rank them by per
09:13capita which is how you should rank this crime stats and just about any stats they're like 27th in the
09:18nation like we said before they've got millions and millions of people where other states with
09:24really high murder rates have like half the people or a quarter of the people but here's the thing
09:29illinois doesn't just feel misunderstood by washington it feels completely culturally incompatible with
09:35most of the united states chicago itself seems like it has more in common with berlin or paris than it
09:41does let's say rural mississippi it's cosmopolitan diverse progressive and full of people who believe in
09:48climate change science voting rights and drinking expressos without being called an elitist so
09:53illinois's attitude is kind of like screw it why not leap across the atlantic and join a club of
09:58countries that actually value some of the things we value and if you think this idea is far-fetched
10:04keep in mind illinois already has a working train system wine snobs and people who say things like
10:10late-stage capitalism unironically that's half the application process for the eu right illinois wanting to
10:16leave the u.s got 337 votes out of 500 55 percent of them saying they'd like to go to the eu
10:29number four oregon oregon has always prided itself on being different quirky artsy and a little
10:35crunchy portland's unofficial slogan might as well be keep portland from ever having a trump rally and if
10:41you remember a few years back we had like almost an entire year of protests and they weren't protesting
10:47the oregon government which there's a lot there to protest they were protesting the trump administration
10:53i am totally shocked though right now living just outside of portland that they already haven't had
10:58that nonsense going on since he's been re-elected maybe we got burnt out on it i think a lot of that
11:03kind of fell by the wayside i think it was just a little too much and people are kind of done with it that
11:07being said oregonians are basically ready to trade uncle sam for uncle canuck or something and if you've
11:14ever been to vancouver canada or toronto you'll see it's a lot like portland which is oregon's largest
11:21city canadians wouldn't bat an eye at portland street performers food trucks serving vegan elk meat
11:26i don't know how they pull that off but it's a thing or citizens biking to their goat yoga class
11:31in fact they'd probably invite them to vancouver just to do the same thing oregon got 361 votes
11:38to leave the us with 81 of them saying canada
11:48number three colorado colorado is like that friend who went to burning man once and now just wants to
11:53ski take herbal substances and be left alone to compost it's outdoorsy progressive and heavily invested
12:00in green energy and health care reform so this flies right in the face of some of the policies
12:05that washington has put forward in recent years denver became a protest hot spot wildfires worsen while
12:12the federal government denies climate change and immigration crackdowns have hit the agricultural area
12:18pretty hard even the legalization of certain substances have been threatened by the current
12:23administration last time around canada in contrast looks like that chill roommate they're fine with the
12:29legal stuff support clean energy and wouldn't scream fake news every time someone mentions melting
12:35glaciers if colorado could pack up the rockies and move them a few hundred miles north they probably
12:40would and honestly bamf would probably welcome them with a trail map and a craft beer besides the
12:45landscapes there's a lot of similarities besides the ones i just mentioned with colorado and canadian
12:51provinces so this one if it could happen but like i said this is all hypothetical it would never happen
12:57but if it could happen this one is the one i would think would probably be one of the first ones to
13:02go colorado got 387 votes out of 500 with 64 of them choosing canada as the destination for the new colorado
13:16number two washington state washington state is like oregon slightly more corporate older sibling but it
13:23shares some of the same values tech savvy climate aware and really into local everything from coffee
13:28to that legal stuff when trump took office the second time around one of the number one searches
13:34for google in january was how to immigrate to canada the current administration's hostility to science and
13:40green energy made washingtonians feel like they were trapped in a country run by flat earthers while
13:46trump was busy promoting coal and downplaying climate change washington was banning plastic straws
13:52and building electric ferry fleets yeah i'm not on board with that whole plastic straw ban i know
13:58they found a turtle that had it in its nose one time but come on but all that and then you add clashes
14:04with ice attempts to defund sanctuary cities and the general sense that dc forgot the west coast exists
14:10unless it was on fire the only reason they didn't secede and swim to vancouver island was because
14:15well the puget sound is really cold washington got 402 votes to bounce to canada
14:2291 percent of the people said that's where they'd go
14:27all right before we get to number one if you haven't subscribed to this channel we would
14:31really appreciate if you did and don't forget to give the video a big thumbs up all right on to number one
14:42and number one california surprise surprise the golden state would like to leave first of all if
14:50california left the united states it would be financially devastating for the whole us you know
14:55washington massachusetts and a few other states do their part but nothing compared to the economic
15:01impact that california has on the u.s economy california though has flirted with succession harder than
15:07just about anyone other than texas like i say texas is big on this there's even a movement called the cal
15:13exit and it's gained steam again it's one of those things kind of like oregon turning into
15:17greater idaho these things will never happen at least not in our lifetime but people are passionate
15:22about it from immigration raids to environmental rollbacks a lot of the administration policies
15:27felt like they were a direct tack on california soil wildfires they blame california during covet 19
15:34they blame deaths on california and the administration was picking fights with state officials affordable
15:40housing ignored it was like california was being punished for being successful but not submissive
15:46canada meanwhile looked like a promised land progressive politics climate goals health care
15:51no giant border wall drama californians could picture themselves fitting right into canada
15:57heck they have half the country's vegan population and yoga instructors canada wouldn't even notice the
16:02change i mean all the good feelings are great but this one would be kind of rough on canada
16:07if california alone joined canada canada's population would double overnight yes california
16:13and canada have just about the same size population right around 40 million each california got 423
16:21votes out of 500 and 61 of them said canada there was a lot for mexico obviously it's right there on
16:28the border and southern california has a very large hispanic community or latino population whatever you
16:33want to say all right that's today's video hope you guys enjoyed it hope you got some information
16:39of it now go out have a great day be nice to each other
