Wendy Stapleton - "The Dusty Springfield Story Review (Live Bird's Basement 2024)
Transcript
00:00Ladies and gentlemen, BBC Television proudly presents The Springfield.
00:08I'm a one in level streets and those strange crowded places
00:15Trying to forget me, but somehow it seems
00:22That my thoughts ever stray to those strange crowded places
00:30Over the sea, on the island of Tereens
00:39High in the sky is a bird on wing
00:46Please carry me with you
00:53Far, far away from the mad rushing clouds
01:01Please carry me with you
01:08Again, I would wonder where memories have been
01:16Far, far away on the island of Tereens
01:25Far, far away on the island of Tereens
01:35Thank you
01:45Well, the order of the day was a mix between this new music coming up
01:50Which is, as I said, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones
01:53But the Springfields were, I guess you'd call them folksy
01:58Yeah, that sounded pretty folksy to me
02:01So they, overnight, became incredibly famous
02:06Because British shows were shown all over Europe
02:10Not to be confused with America
02:13Those two places were very, very different
02:16And back then, you've got to remember, we didn't have film clips
02:19You know, or even a lot of rock shows
02:22That were interactive within the countries
02:25So a lot of the time people heard your song on the radio
02:29But they didn't really know what you looked like
02:31Or much about you at all
02:33So after
02:35The Springfields had their TV show
02:37And they became really famous
02:39They were bombarded by American record companies
02:44Saying, why don't you come to America
02:46And come down to Nashville
02:48And make a country record
02:51You see, Tom had been writing some songs for other people
02:57And he wrote some songs for a little group from Australia
02:59He wrote
03:00Hey there Georgie girl
03:03He wrote
03:05I know I'll never find another you
03:07He wrote all of these amazing songs
03:11Who am I talking about?
03:13Correct the Mondo
03:14He wrote a load of big hits for the Seekers
03:18They also wrote a lot of their own songs
03:20But he wrote all those great big hits
03:22So he was an amazing songwriter
03:24And he said, Dusty
03:26Just let me have one go
03:29At the American market
03:31I really think we can do it
03:33But Dusty was a young girl
03:35She was much younger than them
03:37And she'd been listening to this new music
03:40All the kids in London
03:43Were waiting for the boats to come back from America
03:45To hear the tracks that the sailors
03:49Used to bring back from the States
03:51And all the kids in America
03:53Used to wait for the sailors to come from London
03:55To hear all the new stuff from the Beatles
03:58And the Rolling Stones
03:59And Jerry and the Pacemakers
04:00It was an amazing time for music
04:03But anyway, Dusty said to her brother Tom
04:06You know what?
04:08Okay, let's give it one go
04:10She really wasn't into the music at all
04:13The folk music
04:14But she did want to give them a go
04:16And so she said, Tom
04:18Let's give it a go
04:19And they did
04:21And being the brilliant songwriter that he was
04:25This song went straight
04:27Into the American Top Ten
04:30I don't want your own mansion
04:39With a tear in every room
04:42All I want is a love you promised
04:45Beneath the halo room
04:48I bet you think I should be happy
04:52With your money and your fame
04:56And hide myself in sorrow
04:59While you play your cheating game
05:02Sing it!
05:03Silver creds and golden needles
05:07Can I bend this heart of mine?
05:10And I can't endure my sorrow
05:13In the warm love of your wine
05:16Well, you can't buy my love with money
05:20For I never was that kind
05:23Silver creds and golden needles
05:27Can I bend this heart of mine?
05:30Little bit of country man clapping
05:31Come on!
05:43See ya, kids!
05:45Silver creds and golden needles
05:48Can I bend this heart of mine?
05:52And I dare not draw my sorrow
05:55In the warm love of your wine
05:58Well, you can't buy my love with money
06:02For I never was that kind
06:05Silver creds and golden needles
06:08Can I bend this heart of mine?
06:11Silver creds and golden needles
06:15Can I bend this heart of mine?
06:19My love of mine?
06:24Yee-hoo!
06:27Yee-hah!
06:30Hey, good scene!
06:33Excellent!
06:33Joni, you were giving it
06:34A bit of a burl there
06:36okay so as i said what happened was uh dusty had been listening to this new music
06:44and um she was really still quite young i think she was probably still maybe 18 or 19
