00:00Japan is also known as the land of the rising sun.
00:09The kanji translates to sun origin.
00:14This is because from a Chinese point of view, the sun rises from Japan.
00:22Japan consists of over 6,800 islands.
00:27The four largest islands are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku.
00:38These four islands make up about 97% of Japan's land area.
00:46There are 47 prefectures in Japan.
00:51More than 70% of Japan is mountainous.
00:56Mount Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan at 3,776 meters.
01:06There are more than 1,500 earthquakes a year.
01:11Japan has a population of around 126 million people, which is less than half of the population of the United States.
01:23Yet the area of Japan is just slightly larger than the area of California.
01:32Japan has the third largest economy in the world, behind the United States and China.
01:40Japan has the second highest life expectancy.
01:45Women's life expectancy is 87.
01:50While the men can expect to live until 80.
01:54Japanese is the official language of Japan.
01:59Japan has a prime minister and not a president.
02:04But Japan also has an emperor, who is the constitutional monarch and ceremonial head of state.
02:13Japan enjoys all four seasons.
02:17Summer is quite hot and humid in many parts of Japan.
02:23There is a rainy season that lasts for about 6 weeks from early to mid-summer.
02:35Winter is especially cold in the north part of Honshu and Hokkaido.
02:41Autumn is a very popular time of the year, with many people taking in the beautiful autumn colors in and around the countryside.
02:55Spring is an especially popular time for friends, family and co-workers to gather in the park for cherry blossom season.
03:05Each season also is associated with special foods.
03:11For example, various dishes made with bamboo shoots in the spring.
03:18Cool noodles and watermelon in the summer.
03:23Chestnuts and apples in autumn.
03:27And one pop cuisine called nape in the winter.
03:34Of course, there is a lot more about Japan.
03:39I could go on and on about this beautiful country.
03:44Hot springs, temples, castles, shopping, food, and lots more.
03:55But I'll save it all for the next lesson.
