00:00No, Euronews didn't publish a video about corruption in Moldova.

00:07A fake video has been posted to Russian Telegram channels bearing Euronews as graphics

00:12and claiming that corruption has pushed Moldova to become one of the biggest black markets for arms sales.

00:19It appeared on a Telegram channel called the Military Observer in Russian

00:22and, at the time of recording, had amassed more than 16,000 views.

00:26The graphics and format of the video strongly resembled those of Euronews,

00:30but the channel did not produce it.

00:32The video alleges that high levels of corruption in Moldova's armed forces

00:36mean that the country is now the largest hub for the black market in weapons.

00:40Arms traffickers allegedly use Moldova as a buffer zone for the illegal export of weapons from Ukraine

00:46and distribute them elsewhere in Europe and beyond, according to the fake video.

00:50It attributes a quote to Clara Staicu, Romania's Secretary of State for European Affairs,

00:55in which she supposedly calls Moldova a perfect transit point for arms traffickers

01:00due to its small size and widespread corruption.

01:03It also alleges that the situation has worsened over the past four years,

01:07during the presidency of Maya Sandhu,

01:09and that Interpol has previously reported that weapons smuggled through Moldova

01:13were used to commit terrorist attacks in France and Germany.

01:16It's unclear where any of the claims in the video supposedly come from,

01:20and there appears to be no evidence for any of them.

01:22The video follows hot on the heels of another fake video

01:25that was attributed to Euronews and spread online last week,

01:29alleging that Romania cautioned French authorities over interference

01:32in the Romanian presidential election runoff.

01:35Euronews and other media outlets are routinely targeted by pro-Russian actors

01:39to spread disinformation narratives and weaken trust in the media,

01:43particularly around election time.

01:45There have been repeated cases of false news reports

01:47bearing the visual identity of reputable news outlets

01:50to sow confusion and propaganda.
