00:00BNP Paribas, partenaire des plus belles histoires de Roland Garros, aux côtés des ramasseurs de balles depuis plus de cinquante ans.
00:17Jack, congrats on today. If you can tell us how you turned that match around and got the win.
00:24I thought it was a pretty solid performance overall. First set was difficult. I actually played him last year in Tokyo and it was one of my best matches of the year.
00:36I knew he was a really good player and he can come out with some unplayable stuff.
00:44I think first set just a couple of loose double faults here and there and he was playing well enough to capitalise on that.
00:54I think from there did a really good job of settling myself in and improved as the match went on.
01:01I'm pretty happy with my performance today.
01:04Jack, congratulations. The last couple of visits here have been memorable for reasons that you didn't want.
01:10This year you finally got off the mark here. How are you feeling to get that first win here in the main draw?
01:15Yeah, very happy. Seems weird. I obviously played here a couple of times and haven't been able to...
01:23The first time was a bit of a non-event, to be honest, with my arm. Last year it was a really difficult one but a really important moment for me and my career.
01:36It was memorable for good reasons as well as bad ones.
01:40I think to win my first match here feels amazing but obviously I want to keep on going and keep on improving as the tournament goes on.
01:49Hey Jack, well played. How different does it feel when you go down the set in best of five versus best of three?
01:58Knowing how much more there is of the match to be played and knowing how tough you are to beat?
02:03And also, I guess I know you've talked about this before, but how much does Australia and all of those best of five set matches help you in this format?
02:11Yeah, I mean it's definitely a little bit different.
02:14I think when I lost the first set today I wasn't panicking at all because I felt like I'd obviously come out slow but then I was building my way back into the match in that first set.
02:28And yeah, like you said, he's going to have to play another two sets to beat me.
02:34And in the first set I wasn't playing great tennis at all and he was almost playing some lights out stuff.
02:42So I knew that it was going to be a long match to go.
02:45And I think, yeah, when I've watched the great players it's like, you know, there's still such a long way to go in Grand Slam tennis.
02:53And that's something I'm still understanding, but I'm understanding it better and better.
02:58I understand when to, in a three set match for instance, I'm usually quite aggressive and quite full on all the time.
03:06Whereas in Grand Slam you just can't be like that because the match is too long.
03:10So I think today I did a really good job of staying calm and knowing that my tennis was going to get better and that I've prepared well and that things were going to click into place.
03:22Obviously you've got to focus on yourself, Jack, but on the big picture, you know, last year we went love for six.
03:29This year we've gone six for seven.
03:31So, I mean, best results for 50 years here.
03:34So how does that feel for you and the group?
03:37I think it's amazing.
03:38Obviously I've been really focused on myself and my own preparations, but I've been watching the other players.
03:45Obviously Katie winning, Emma winning, I mean all of them, sorry, pretty much.
03:50So, I think it's amazing for British tennis, to be honest.
03:54Especially, I watched Jacob yesterday.
03:57I said that he was going to be a top player, I still believe that.
04:00I know you guys have probably watched him and he's very impressive.
04:03Cam, obviously in the Olympics last year, picked up an injury and has been struggling a little bit since for his level.
04:13And to come out and beat Medvedev, that's a huge win.
04:16Obviously Emma playing great tennis on the clay, Bolts as well, and Sone.
04:21So, I think it's great.
04:23You know, it shows that we're not afraid of playing well on the clay.
04:28And I think all of them, great respect for, they all work really hard and they're all great players.
04:34So, I'm not surprised either, to be honest.
04:37That's good.
04:38Hey Jack, well done today.
04:40I just wondered, he pulled out a couple of underarm serves, one at quite a big moment.
04:45I wondered, is that something you prepared for at all before facing him, that he might do that?
04:50No, I mean, I knew that he does use it a little bit.
04:54You know, I never understand it with underarm serves where people like boo and stuff.
04:58Because it's part of the game.
05:00If you've got that shot in the locker, so many guys are returning from so far back in the court that it's a good play.
05:07You know, it worked on that point against me today.
05:09And I have seen him pull out that one before.
05:12So, I was kind of wary of it.
05:14And yeah, it's a good shot if you can play at the right time.
05:20The guy's not really engaged or something and they're standing so far back.
05:23So, you know, he's a talented boy, isn't he?
05:26I don't have that shot in the locker.
05:28I definitely don't.
05:29Terrible.
05:30Jack, you've had a great clay season this year, your best clay season that you've had so far.
05:36How important was it for you to get a win here to back up the results you've had this year in your top five status now?
05:43Yeah, definitely important.
05:45Yeah, I feel like last year, you know, I'm obviously a different player now in many ways.
05:50But I think, you know, I didn't really get my foot off the ground.
05:53You know, I lost three seven sixes in the third.
05:56I've always enjoyed the clay.
05:58I've always liked the clay.
05:59I've always thought that my game suits it.
06:01Maybe this year a bit physically better and confidence and all that sort of stuff.
06:05But yeah, I mean, I know I won a match here, but, you know, I'm coming here wanting to go deep in the tournament.
06:11You know, and I have the confidence and I have the belief that I can do that.
06:15So obviously winning a match feels good, but, you know, my goals are much higher than that.
06:22So although it feels great, you know, I'm really focused on hopefully going as deep as I can here.
06:29Yeah.
06:30So quite a few players have been talking about the weird situations they've found themselves in with anti-doping,
06:35like particularly when they can't pee.
06:37And like, for example, Tannen Greespoor was telling me that, you know, because he couldn't pee for like three hours.
06:42He ended up like sitting on his couch watching an Ajax game, the full game with the anti-doping guy until he could pee.
06:49I'm curious if you've had any weird experiences with them or, and if not in general, just what is it like having someone watch you take a piss?
06:59No, I mean, like it's, it's obviously, it's obviously a difficult moment, right?
07:05You know, you kind of, sometimes you push so hard that you're, you're fighting and you're right next to them.
07:12So, you know, it's, it's, it's a tough job for them as well.
07:16And I always keep that in mind, like some people get annoyed and stuff because, you know, it is very intimate situation.
07:23But at the end of the day, like I feel for that person as well. It's their job.
07:27But yeah, it's, it's, it's sometimes difficult as well.
07:30Like if it's, if it's really late and stuff and you, you know, you want to get cracking on with, with whatever you're doing next and stuff.
07:38And then you've got to, you've got to wait around and do that for a long time.
07:43You know, it's, it's difficult because you lose, you know, you're losing sleep.
07:46But then I also think, you know, it's a tough job for them as well. It's not easy.
07:51So, yeah, some awkward moments for sure though.
07:54You mentioned there about your game, so you feel it works on clay.
07:59How much are you just playing your normal game? How much are you making adjustments for the surface?
08:04I mean, I think one of the biggest things for me was the, the movement, you know, sliding into the ball, knowing when to, yeah, just get around my forehand more.
08:18I think definitely looking for my forehand more is a big thing, using that as a weapon more.
08:24And I think just, just sliding, you know, you watch the best players on the clay courts, they're able to slide into balls off both wings.
08:33I feel like maybe in the past I struggled with that a little bit more, whereas my timing of that has improved a lot.
08:40And it's just, yeah, just small adjustments of when to, what balls to play at the right time.
08:46But I think naturally my game really suits the clay, so I don't think about it too much in all honesty.
08:52And I think not much in all honesty, yeah.
