Relive a forgotten but brilliant performance by South African allrounder Adrian Kuiper, who took 3 wickets for just 33 runs in 5 overs against West Indies in the 1st ODI at Sabina Park, Kingston, on April 7, 1992.

Though Kuiper was often praised for his explosive batting, this match highlighted his underrated bowling skills. Coming in as a medium-pacer, he dismissed key West Indian batsmen and helped keep their scoring in check. This performance was crucial during South Africa’s early days back in international cricket after years of isolation.

Kuiper, known for his powerful sixes and fearless batting, was part of many iconic moments — from smashing 117 off 67 balls in Bloemfontein to hitting 26 runs in an over against Australia. But in this video, we shine a light on his bowling brilliance, often forgotten in the history books.

This video also takes a deeper look at his career, his contribution to South African cricket's re-emergence, and why he’s often compared to the legendary Ian Botham.

🎥 Watch till the end to learn more about Adrian Kuiper’s impact on South African cricket, both with the bat and the ball.

00:00Adarion Kuiper, born on August 24, 1959, was one of South Africa's most exciting cricketers
00:08during a crucial time in the nation's sporting history.
00:11As an all-rounder known for his explosive batting, handy medium-paced bowling, and bold
00:16presence on the field, Adarion Kuiper became a key figure during South Africa's return
00:21to international cricket after years of isolation.
00:25Although widely known for his big hitting exploits, Adarion Kuiper was also a skillful, medium-paced
00:31baller, who often provided his team with valuable breakthroughs.
00:35One of his career best bowling performances came on April 7, 1992, during the first ODI
00:41against the mighty West Indies at Spina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.
00:45In that match, Kuiper bowled a tight and clever spell, picking up three wickets for just 33
00:51runs in five overs.
00:55Yeah, he's gone, he's out, Richardson, trying to run it down to third man, it hit him on
01:06the pad, it was too close to him, the ball seemed to cut back just a fraction into him, umpire
01:11Buckner raises his finger, and Richardson, who entered to booze, is now leaving Spina Park.
01:17Will the booze reach the same crescendo?
01:20I hope not, but certainly there are booze about, John Redd.
01:23Yes indeed, that was very unfortunate for Ritchie, because he misread Cowpers, he moved the ball
01:28back, there he goes, the ball came back into him.
01:30Oh well that's up in the air, he's going to be caught by Vessels there at short extra
01:41cover, he is, it was a slow ball, and he checked his stroke, and so Simmons' innings is over,
01:47he's out for 123, it's 239 for four, he was caught by Vessels off the bowling of Caper.
01:55Yes indeed, he looked as though he's getting a little bit tired, and he didn't quite follow
02:00through on that ball, it was a good ball from Cowperdor, he, um, slow ball, he checked his
02:05shot, and he was easily caught at extra cover.
02:07239 for four.
02:12Well there we are, that is the end of what has been very much the innings of the match
02:17so far, an easy catch, and kept the Vessels, took it so well.
02:23239 for four.
02:25Looking to hit the ball as hard as possible, a slow ball is always a very good ball.
02:34It's well struck down the ground, he's beaten them, absolutely bisecting the long off and
02:39long on, that is an absolutely straight hit down the ground by Benjamin for four.
02:43Very good shot indeed, well pitched up, struck straight, and powerfully.
02:56And the slow ball has done him again, once more kept the Vessels has a catch.
03:06A slow full toss, he was into the shot, far too worthy, and just managed to get it off the
03:12bottom of the bat, and lobbed it up to wide bid on for Vessels to haul in the catch.
03:17Change of pace, very very important at this stage of the game.
03:29Kepler Vessels, another simple catch.
03:32A Darien Kuyper played only one test match and 25 won the international for South Africa
03:49between 1991 and 1996.
03:52But the number of games does not reflect the depth of his contribution.
03:56Kuyper played with hard aggression and flair, quickly earning a reputation as a hard-hitting
04:02baseman who could also deliver important breakthroughs with the ball.
04:06A Darien Kuyper made his name in South African domestic cricket while playing for Western Province,
04:11where his powerful hitting and consistent performances turned heads.
04:15One of his most memorable moments came in 1989 during a high-profile day-night match between
04:21a South African XI and a Rebel English XI.
04:25In a breathtaking display of hitting, a Darien Kuyper blasted an astonishing 117 runs of just
04:3149 balls.
04:32Steering through the English bowling attack with these, that innings announced his arrival
04:36as one of the most dangerous hitters in the South African side.
04:40Unfortunately, due to South Africa's long political isolation from international sports,
04:45a Darien Kuyper official international debut was delayed until he was 32 years old.
04:51Many believe that if he had debuted earlier, he could have had a much longer and even more
04:56impactful international career.
04:58Still, he made the most of the chances that came his way.
05:01When South Africa was admitted to world cricket in 1991, a Darien Kuyper was included in the
05:08spot for the historic ODI series against India.
05:11In the first-ever ODI played by the post-isolation South African team, a Darien Kuyper played a
05:17crucial role.
05:18He scored a brisk 43 runs, starting cautiously but then unleashing his trademark big hits, including
05:24one massive six that had the Eden Garden crowds in Kolkata on their feet.
05:29That innings alone won him admiration from fans around the world.
05:33He also took the key wickets of Kapil Dev, a legendary Indian all-rounder, further providing
05:38his value to the team.
05:39For a short time, a Darien Kuyper even served as a vice captain of the South African side,
05:45a reflection of the respect he had earned within the team.
05:49His ability to contribute with both bat and ball added depth and balance to the South African
05:54team, especially in foreign conditions like the Caribbean's where experience and control
05:59were vital.
06:00A Darien Kuyper was also a part of another landmark moment in South African cricket.
06:05He was selected to play in South Africa's first official test match after readmission
06:10against the West Indies in Barbados in 1992.
06:13While this would turn out to be his only official test, just being part of that squad was a proud
06:19moment for both Kuyper and the nation.
06:22It was a symbol of South Africa's rebirth in international cricket and a reward for players
06:27who had stayed committed during the darker years of the sporting isolation.
06:32Although a Darien Kuyper did not play many ODIS, he left a trail of thrilling innings.
06:40One such standout came in 1994 during a match against Australia at Centurion.
06:45Kuyper went barest, smashing 26 runs in a single over a fast bowler Greg McDermott, including
06:51three consecutive sixes.
06:52It was vintage Kuyper, aggressive, fearless, and match-changing.
06:56In his final ODIS appearance in 1996, Kuyper signed off with a solid 61 runs against England
07:02at Port Elizabeth.
07:03However, due to the growing concerns about his age and fitness, he was not selected for
07:08the 1996 Cricket World Cup.
07:10At the end, that disappointed many of his fans who believed he still had a lot to offer.
07:16Throughout his career, Darien Kuyper was often compared to English great all-rounder Ian
07:21Botham, largely because of big hitting and similar batting style.
07:25In one of his 1990 innings against the Rebel England side in Bloom Fountain, 117 runs of 67
07:32balls, including eight sixes and eight fours, reaching his century in only 48 deliveries,
07:38was described by fellow South African Darrell Cullinan as the best one-day hunter he had
07:44ever seen.
07:45Today, Adrian Kuyper lives a peaceful life as a former in Western Cape.
07:50While the roar of the stadium and the crack of the bat have faded, Kuyper remains a fond
07:55memory in the hearts of South African cricket fans.
07:58An athlete who helped usher in a new era for his country.
08:01Whether it was a smashing sixes into the stand, taking key wickets or being part of South Africa's
08:07historic return to international cricket, a Darian Kuyper played his part with pride, power
08:12and passion.
