00:00Thousands have poured through Damascus Gate in Jerusalem's Old City.
00:07This is the gate which cuts right through the heart of the Holy City's Muslim Quarter.
00:12And there is a very clear reason why this is the chosen path for these far-right Israeli nationalists.
00:18They are commemorating the day back in the 1967 war,
00:22when the Old City and East Jerusalem were captured by Israeli forces.
00:28These people believe that this is their territory.
00:31It is not something widely recognised around the world.
00:35And it is deliberately provocative for the Palestinians who live behind the city's walls and in East Jerusalem beyond.
00:42In the hours before the march arrived in the Old City,
00:45hundreds of nationalist teenagers tore through its narrow winding streets,
00:49chanting racist and inflammatory slogans, including death to Arabs.
00:54One could be seen trying to light a small copy of the Muslim holy text, the Koran, on fire,
00:59while others harassed a number of Palestinian women,
01:02surrounding and spitting on them and making animal noises.
01:05A lot of shop owners in this part of the city closed their doors early to avoid being harassed and attacked.
01:11Everyone is very stressed and angry about this situation,
01:15because it's not a comfortable situation and everyone is getting ready.
01:20I came, everyone spat on me. Why? I do not know. I did nothing. It's not OK what they did.
01:26Some of the groups were not too keen on being filmed as they moved through the Old City,
01:30taking issue with members of the media recording their behaviour.
01:33Some peace activists were also in the area, trying to calm the situation down,
01:38handing out flowers to locals.
01:40Jerusalem is for all of us, for humanity.
01:43That's the symbol that Jerusalem stands for the universe.
01:46Both Israelis and Palestinians see this city as integral to who they are, their identities.
01:52And the status and the disputes over Jerusalem are one of the most difficult issues
01:58when it comes to talking about a two-state solution in this part of the world.
02:04These Israelis want the Palestinian population to be cleared out.
02:08The people of Israel are not afraid of a long route. It will happen sometimes.
02:14The march ends at the Western Wall, underneath the Temple Mount,
02:17an area reserved solely for Muslim worship.
02:20Although earlier in the day, Israel's far-right National Security Minister,
02:24Itmar Ben-Gavir, once again visited the area to demand that change.
02:29While this is a particularly provocative day,
02:31Palestinians believe it is indicative of the broader treatment
02:35they experience at the hands of some Israelis,
02:38in more subtle ways each and every day.
02:41And as the war in Gaza continues,
02:43it is also an example of the yawning gulf
02:46which exists between Israelis and Palestinians
02:50in trying to live side-by-side in this part of the world.
