00:00Naomi Oe Oheni Ohti from Ghana.
00:05When hard work pays off, Oheni Ohti has won the 2025 Astor Guardians Global Nursing Award,
00:13her pioneering work in cancer care and nurse training.
00:16She was selected from 100,000 applicants across 199 countries.
00:21This is not just my victory.
00:23It is a recognition of the resilience, compassion, and leadership of nurses across Ghana, Africa, and the world.
00:32Over two decades ago, I began my nursing journey with a simple mission to ease pain, bring hope, and work alongside those battling cancer.
00:43In sub-Saharan Africa, I have witnessed firsthand the inequities in cancer care, especially in the resource communities.
00:53But I have also seen the immense potential of nurses to lead transformative change.
01:00As head of nursing at Kolebu's Oncology Centre in Accra, Oheni helped launch training programmes.
01:06She was also part of the team that developed Ghana's postgraduate oncology nursing curriculum in 2015.
01:13Her award comes amid global calls to elevate the profession.
01:16We need urgent, sustained investments in nursing education, jobs, leadership, and working conditions,
01:26informed by data, driven by equity, and inspired by the courage and compassion of nurses.
01:35My congratulations to the nurses being recognised today.
01:39This year's award cycle saw a 28% increase in nursing applications over the last year.
