“The Golf Specialist” is a 1930 American pre-Code comedy short film directed by Monte Brice, starring W.C. Fields. The film follows J. Effingham Bellweather, a con artist staying at a Florida hotel, who gets caught up in a series of slapstick misadventures. When he offers to teach the house detective’s wife how to play golf, his lesson is constantly interrupted by distractions—including a squeaky-shoed caddy, flying papers, and even a pie mishap. Just as he demonstrates the importance of keeping the wrists close together, the police arrive to arrest him for a list of absurd crimes. The film was Fields’ first talkie and features his signature dry humor and comedic timing.

05:00I bought one in Copenhagen one time.
05:02It was a combination cigar lighter and matchbox.
05:06The matches were very good.
05:08Hello, mister.
05:10Hello, little boy.
05:12Will you give me a dollar?
05:14Oh, it's a little girl.
05:16Hello, little girl.
05:18How old are you?
05:20Five years old.
05:22Five years old?
05:24Will you give me a dollar to put in my bank?
05:26I'll give you a dollar to put in your bank.
05:28If you'll sing me a song.
05:30Give me the dollar first.
05:32Ah, you're more than five.
05:34Go on, get out of here.
05:36Oh, come on. Give me a dollar.
05:38Come on, scram. Who's Craig? Get away.
05:40I don't care.
05:42I got $50 in my bank already.
05:46You have $50 in your bank?
05:48Yes.
05:54Oh, beautiful.
06:00Probably has a pin sticking in her.
06:02Well, well, Mr. Bowweather.
06:04What are you doing down in Florida?
06:06Oh, I was just negotiating for a bank.
06:08That's your little girl?
06:10I don't know whose little girl it is,
06:12but she's trying to get money out of me.
06:14She's a wonderful little child, though.
06:16I was just playing with her silken hair.
06:18You can lift me up by my hair if you want to.
06:22I can lift her up by her hair if I want to.
06:24She's as game as a pebble.
06:26Mom, look me up.
06:28Isn't it wonderful?
06:30Isn't it wonderful?
06:32It really is remarkable and light as a feather.
06:34Mom, lift me up.
06:36Lift me up.
06:37He wants me to do it again.
06:39You know, it really is something to be proud of.
06:41Yes, it's marvelous, you little Michu.
06:44You wonderful little girl.
06:45Lift me way up.
06:47He wants me to lift her way up.
06:49He wants me to show it to everybody in the hotel.
06:51Look.
06:53Why, it's little...
06:55Little, uh...
06:57Little people or something.
06:59Say, was that guy trying to flirt with you?
07:03Who?
07:05Oh, you big silly.
07:06There hasn't been a man anywhere near me.
07:08Oh, don't try to kid me.
07:10If I catch him playing around you again, I'll pulverize him.
07:14Oh, you're such a big boot.
07:16Now, if any of these fellas make any wise cracks to you,
07:19just tip me off.
07:21All right, Daddy dear.
07:29How do you do?
07:34I beg your pardon.
07:35That was rather silly of me, wasn't it?
07:37No, was that your father?
07:38Oh, no.
07:39And he was about to strike you?
07:41Well, perhaps he would have if you hadn't been here.
07:44Why, the great hulking brute.
07:47You know, I've never struck a woman in my life.
07:49You haven't?
07:50Not even my own mother.
07:52Oh, I could see that you were the very soul of kindness.
07:57Oh, I'm very kind.
07:59But, of course, I can be cruel if needs be.
08:02You can.
08:03Oh, a veritable tiger.
08:05But you have courage written all over you.
08:08It's the laundry box, dear.
08:10They're going to play golf.
08:13Oh, it must be wonderfully romantic and secluded out on the golf.
08:17Oh, it's a marvelous game.
08:19I'm going to play this afternoon myself.
08:21Would you like to join me?
08:22Oh, I'd love to.
08:23Do you play?
08:24Oh, no.
08:25I wouldn't even know which end of the caddy to use.
08:28Oh, but you do know something about it.
08:36Permit me.
08:41Oh, I just love it out here.
08:43So nice and green and everything.
08:45Yes, it is.
08:47Rather parky this morning, though.
08:49I have never been on such a college golf course in all my life.
09:04You little sissy.
09:05Would you bring a ball with you?
09:08Wonderful.
09:11Now, stay in clear.
09:12Keep your eye on the ball.
09:15Everything is formed.
09:18Mm-hmm.
09:20This is what they call the explosion shot from the team.
09:23Ah!
09:24Won't hurt you.
09:25Won't hurt you at all.
09:26Oh.
09:27Stand clear, boy.
09:28Wrong club.
09:32What?
09:33Wrong club.
09:34Friday's putting niblick.
09:36A putting niblick?
09:37Really, the little chap doesn't understand the nomenclature of the game.
09:44Now, stand clear, boy.
09:45Keep your eye on the ball.
09:46I have it.
09:47It's all right.
09:48Stand clear.
09:49Stand.
09:52It's all right.
09:53Come here.
09:54Stand back here.
09:56He gets all hot and bothered about nothing.
09:58I lost a really dear friend in the Canary Islands running...
10:01What are you doing with a club like this in the bag?
10:04Don't play with these clubs.
10:07I lost a really dear friend in the Canary Islands 20 years ago.
10:10How dreadful.
10:11Count the name of Pumphrey Pothal Whistle.
10:13Oh, what a funny name.
10:15It's one of the Pothal Whistles from Twickingham.
10:17Have you ever been to Twickingham?
10:18Have you ever been to Twickingham?
10:23Stop it, will you?
10:26Come on.
10:29Oh, quite a driver.
10:31Yes, he is.
10:36Yes, he is.
10:44Yes, we lost old Pothal Whistle in the Canary Islands.
10:46He was kicked to death.
10:47Oh, that's a shame.
10:48Yes, he was kicked to death by two infuriated Canary Birds.
10:51Oh, what is that?
10:52Someone had been feeding the meat.
10:55I happened to...
10:56Here, may I?
11:00Is anything strange about that club?
11:01Yes, it does look rather odd.
11:03Yeah.
11:04I think the shaft is warped.
11:05Give me another bath.
11:07Ah, that's better.
11:09That's much better.
11:10Yes.
11:11Now, stand here, boys.
11:12Keep your eye on the ball.
11:13This is what they call hitting past the team, as I told you before.
11:19Really remarkable stuff.
11:43What have you got here, after all?
11:53A pint.
11:55Fancy bringing a pint of a golf cart.
11:58A pint, yes.
12:00But a pint, never.
12:01Why, never.
12:03Why, it's like, uh...
12:05It's like carrying...
12:07Carrying, uh...
12:09Something or other.
12:12Somewhere.
12:13Or other.
12:14As the case may be.
12:17Are you staying clear to keep your eye on this ball?
12:19Stand clear, boy.
12:20Keep your eye on the ball.
12:25Stand clear, boy.
12:26Keep your eye on the ball.
12:32Stand clear.
12:36Quite a breeze.
12:37Yes, there is.
12:38Quite a breeze.
12:39Yes?
12:40Yes, there is.
12:41Quite a breeze.
12:43Here's your overcoat.
12:46Now, stand clear, boy.
12:47Keep your eye on the ball.
12:49Thanks for saying this is hitting past the chin.
12:51Yes.
12:52Hitting as far past the chin as possible.
12:54Uh-huh.
12:55Never stand close to the ball when you hit it after you hit it.
13:05Sounds like one of those birds that fly backwards.
13:09Stand clear, boy.
13:10You can fly on the ball.
13:11It's coming this way.
13:16It's coming this way.
13:17It's coming.
13:38Isn't it a creep?
13:41Stop it, will you?
13:42Stop it.
13:43You're staying still.
13:48Now, you stand clear and keep your eye on the ball.
13:50Stand still.
13:52Don't get moving around here with those inhabited feet of yours.
13:57As I was saying, it requires a great deal of quiet nerve.
14:01And slow...
14:07You stand still and keep your eye on the ball.
14:10I'm sorry, dear.
14:11You lose my temper.
14:12Huh?
14:13Stop it.
14:14Oh...
14:15God, for Daniel.
14:24Take you in...
14:34In your neck.
14:35Ah, put your foot on that, will you?
14:46I couldn't have you with me again as a caddy, for all the team China.
15:04Tea, or coffee, or chop suey, or whatever it is they have there so much else.
15:13Vice said I'd like to ring your neck.
15:18I'd like to wash it first and then give it a good ring.
15:22Give it a ring that's here for...
15:25miles.
15:27Miles.
15:32Will you take that out, please?
15:33Yes, of course.
15:35Put it in there.
15:36You're all right.
15:42This is really disgusting.
15:43Oh, it's terrible.
15:44I'm sorry that you had to see this.
15:46That's all right.
15:49Now, stand clear and keep your eye on the boy.
16:04Stand still, you stand still.
16:08Stand still.
16:12Stand still.
16:37Stand still, you're right.
16:38Get down.
16:40I'm going to go.
16:42You're right?
16:43Good.
16:44Good.
16:45I've got a back in.
16:46Mm-hmm.
16:47Hello, Sheriff.
16:48How are you?
16:49The Sheriff is looking for Mr. Bellwether.
16:50Oh.
16:52Hello, Sheriff.
16:54How are you?
16:56The sheriff is looking for Mr. Bellwether.
17:12Well, where is he?
17:14He's out playing golf with your wife.
17:16With my wife?
17:18Come on, holy smoke. Let's get it.
17:22There it is.
17:25Huh?
17:26There.
17:27Where?
17:28On the end of your club.
17:30Oh.
17:31So it is. So it is.
17:33What an eye he has.
17:36Now, you stand clear and keep your eye on the ball.
17:39Oh, I've forgotten something.
17:41Huh?
17:43Probably forgotten her horse.
17:47Well, I won't need it anyway.
17:49Won't need a horse.
17:51I won't need a horse.
17:53Want to ride it?
18:00I won't need it either.
18:04Here's a club for you for short holes.
18:07Now, stand clear and keep your eye on the ball.
18:10I lost a horse one time.
18:12I forgot him.
18:13I left him down the Grand Canyon.
18:15Grand Canyon.
18:17That's a beautiful camel you have with you.
18:23Crazy about me.
18:25Now, stand clear, boy.
18:26Don't stand there.
18:27Don't you know I'll smite you in the sconce with his truncheon?
18:31Don't be standing right and go boom away.
18:33Great, silly boy.
18:48I'll have to have it re-blocked.
18:50Oh, that's a shame.
18:51Cheers.
18:52Thanks.
18:53Thanks.
18:54Thanks for nothing.
19:00You stand clear and keep your eye on this ball.
19:06I was saying this is hitting past the chin.
19:08Hmm?
19:09Stand clear, boy.
19:10Come on.
19:26Show it to you, is it?
19:28I'd like to take this club and ice it.
19:32I'll tee that up to you.
19:33All right.
19:34Now, stand clear and keep your eye on the ball.
19:37Another thing I forgot to tell you was...
19:40Keep the wrists together.
19:41Never let the wrists separate.
19:43Take the club back slow.
19:46No, no.
20:03As I was saying before.
20:05You've got to keep the wrists close together.
20:07Never let the wrists...
20:08Keep the wrists close together.
20:11Close together.
20:12Never let the wrists separate.
20:14Keep them close together.
20:16Keep the wrists close together.
20:18Keep the wrists close together.
