apprenticeship awards
Transcript
00:00I think apprentices are so important and we at Sheffield Forgemaster took on a lot of apprentices.
00:05I think there was something like 10% of the workforce were apprentices at one time.
00:09We managed to get the average age down from about 50 down to 40.
00:14Enthusiastic people and they're the future.
00:17And I think people need a balance really between studying at university and studying as an apprentice.
00:23And I think we're getting it right in the United Kingdom at the moment.
00:26Has it been a tough decision?
00:28An absolute tough decision.
00:30There were so many good people I found it very difficult I have to say.
00:34Some of the apprentices were outstanding and I would like to give them all an award because they were that good.
00:42But there's some special people and we'll soon see who they are when it comes up for their awards.
00:49I chose this apprenticeship over a traditional university route in the hopes of receiving more practical, meaningful education.
00:56And I even sort of turned down an offer at the University of Cambridge and it was the best decision I've ever made.
01:03It's given me the opportunity to work with the most amazing, inspiring engineers every day.
01:08And as you said, you know, working on a more sustainable MRI, it's, you know, really drives me.
01:15Because I think it's every employer's responsibility to train the next generation.
01:20It's our, a bit like Star Wars, but it's our destiny.
01:23You've got to get as many roofers or whatever you do.
01:27So we've had many, many apprentices and we keep getting more and more.
01:32This means so much.
01:33Roofing's not sexy, but you're mainly sexy.
